"Underachieving" Roddick has 24 titles and Davis Cup championship

Roddick:
Roddick has actually won a slam, Henman has not, and Roddick has more than double Henman's titles.

Henman:
He can actually volley. Aside from their H2H, that's the only thing Henman had over Roddick.

Hang on, for a start, this is the world-wide-web. Did you think everybody here was American? Being American is hardly a prerequisite for bashing Roddick, just being human will do.
Secondly, are you suggesting that an American should never criticize another American, notwithstanding their behavior, and that if they do then the only possible reason is jealousy? Thats fcuked up.
British criticizing Henman is another matter.

To seriously criticize and bash someones playing abilities, I think the criticizer should be better than the player himself...and Roddick's been no1 american for almost a decade. .. this is what I meant.

I just wanted to say it nicely, but he is washed up. He's done. At least with winning grand Slams. Hes kind of like the Phil Mickleson of tennis. Everyone wants him to be the big rival, but he disappoints every time.

Must be hard being James Blake's #1 fan

Zero Slam titles
Zero Master titles
Only 10 ATP titles to Roddick's 24
Best slam result: QF

I guess it is better to be washed up (although at 25 hard to say that) than a never was:?

I never thought highly of Roddick. His highlights were when there was a gap in tennis. Sampras retiring or just retired and Federer not there yet. However, for that short period of time he was the best tennisplayer, or at least he made the most of his potential at that time. But I'm not a fan, I dislike him very much.

So the coaches should retire then also..?

As long as the criticism can be backed up with arguments and a little expertise or common sense about tennis, anybody may criticize Roddick or any other tennisplayer. Demanding that the criticizer is better than the player himself just doesn't make any sense..

Andy Roddick.

Poor *******. Even with his one dimensional game, he has managed to win a slam and get to the finals of 2 Wimby's and a US Open.

One of the greats ? Hard to say just yet; his career isn't over by a long shot.

But thus far, he parrallels players like:

Gabby Sabatini (1 Slam, 27 Titles, 1 finalist)

Jana Novotná (1 Slam, 24 Titles, 3 finalist)

Goran Ivanišević (1 Slam, 22 Titles, 3 Finalist)

Michael Chang, Pat Cash, Michael Stich, Vitas Gerulaitis and on and on.

So far, he is a one slam wonder.

-

Top 10 American Ever ? (Men I presume as Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, William's sister's and Tracy Austin would blow that list out of the water)

American Men Greats (NOT IN ORDER OF GREATNESS!)

Bill Tilden
Don Budge
Jimmy Connors
Jim Courier
John McEnroe
Pete Sampras
Andre Agassi
Arthur Ashe
Micheal Chang (So far has the better career in my judgement)

-

If Andy wins a handful or more titles but doesn't win another slam, he'll be bordering on forgettable as the years go on; a one slam wonder.

=

It's about Major Titles. Period.

...yeah right...couches go around criticizing and bashing the players.
..I think Roddick has better expertise of his game and better common sense about tennis than anyone who has ever criticized or bashed his plaing abilities.

yeah, he's top 10 again. but once clay hits, he'll drop off. he's a one - surface player

on that note, how'd Berdych sneak into the top 10?

I do not think a mediocer player in these days will make it to top 1000 in the world.

To make it to top 1000 you need to:
- be very talented
- work very hard starting very young
- have good luck
- avoid injuries

To make top 10: GREATNESS

...by the way...I'm originally from Brazil, now living in Europe.

I love the short sighted generalizations of posters who have nothignt offer. It's like saying 'You're French ? You must be a p*ssy.'

Bush is a bad dream as is the state of our Empire.

Because we expect greatness, not mediocrity.

This line got me.

If anybody can't go out there and do better than 2 players that are in the top 10 , then there is no point in criticizing how they play. That's the main thing, you can expect everyone to be the greatest ever. Andy has done whatever he can with his limited talent and still works hard to do better.

And yes, I know Bush has lowest rating in the history. I was just answering to the 'we expect greatness' part.

Who's critisizing their play ? Their results speak for themselves.

I respect them and pull for them in Slams, but it is what it is.

I'm not saying this in a bad way but you haven't been here long. I used to be on these threads once in a while about 2-3 months before I joined. Everytime Roddick loses 101 thread pops up with 101 reasons why Roddick is bad and why people hate him and dislike and things like that. That was what I was talking about.

For a guy with a very good serve, only an above average forehand, horrible backhand, atrocious volleys, and mediocre movement, Roddick's accomplished quite a lot.

You said it. Without Roger around, Roddick would be a multiple Grand Slam winner and a future legend. All the legends of tennis (Borg, Connors, McEnroe etc) were lucky to have theire carriers before Federers.

Please explain the Mickelson analogy......not sure I follow.

Both were (over)hyped by Americans, if they weren't American, they'd be nothing special. Both win many smaller events, but shrink on the big stage. If anything, by comparing Roddick to Mickelson, I'm overating Roddick. Maybe he's the John Daly of tennis? Oh wait, John Daly won 2 majors, not just one. And John Daly's actually likable.

Uh- Phil Mickelson has won 3 majors

2004 Masters
2005 PGA Championship
2006 Masters

He is not overhyped. He just happened to play in the same era as Tiger.
Has the most weeks ranked in the top 10 for anyone not ranked #1

My point is, both are overhyped to be rivals of the top player (Fed, Tiger) but never live up to expectation in the majors. 3 majors in 15 years in golf is akin to 1 in 7 years for Roddick in tennis.

I never thought they were overhyped:confused:

It seems like you are trying desperately to put that label on them weather they deserve it or not. Fed and Tiger were so dominant I don't think anybody in the world was considered their rival except maybe very early on in their careers before it became clear that they were the best.

The biggest overhyped American I can think in recent memory is Donald Young. The jury is still out, but I would be surprised if he can even do what Andy did at age 18 based on his 2008 performance thus far.

The part about Mickelson having won 3 majors and being very, very talented (but just unluck enough to be in the Tiger era) has already been addressed.

I will agree with you however that Phil is not well liked. The players call him:

Just because Golf has what they call MAJOR's doesn't make it a valid point

Golfer's aren't playing against an opponent (they play the course). In fact, who cares about Golf ? It isn't in the same league as tennis as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not comparing golf to tennis, just the two athletes, if golfers even are athletes. (NOT) OK, Roddick is the Peyton Manning, Danica Patrick, of tennis.

James Blake was also out for pretty much 2 years and at some points not playing any tennis. Roddick has had a pretty much injury free career, besides some things here and there.

James Blake is also 3 years older than Roddick.

Besides injury, personal issues that keep you from playing, drugs issues, ect. are all part of being a pro athlete. If you start making excuses for everybody who had issues or injuries all your left with is a bunch of "what ifs"

Still, going back through all the training again and doing all the hard work that got you where you were is a grueling process and I think that its quite a big accomplishment that Blake has continued to play tennis. Not everyone would continue after going through what he went through.

So... has he underachieved because he hasn't lived up to expectations or has he overachieved because he has accomplished so much when he is 'just a serve'. Make up your minds people.

^^ He has done what he has been able to do. No more, no less.

If it wasn't for Fed, he may have more than one slam, but unfortunately for him, his best tennis is now behind him and when he was at the very top of his game, he had to contend with the almighty.

Andy Roddick:
-Won the US Open
-Played one heck of a final against RogerGod at Wimbledon
-Was once ranked #1 in the world (so what if it was for 10 minutes?)
-Presently playing with the Babolat Pure Drive model and model Brooklyn Decker
-Plowed Mandy Moore

I think Roddick should do nothing but serve and volley; his footwork sucks, his net game attrocious.

His serve and bassline game are gifts from the gods.

Now work on becoming a complete player Andy.
