UNIQLO - Worst brand ever

Its a joke.
They invest millions of dolars on player contracts and cant even put some tennis clothes on stores.

Went on 2 uniqlo stores on my europe trip (Strasbourg and Brussels), the store didnt have any tennis clothing and the store attendants didnt even know uniqlo had tennis clothing.

What a disgrace.

I have a bunch of their UT graphic tees, airsim, wrist bands, socks and Nishikori's full FO kit from this year. Overall, I like the feel and quality and it is on par with Nike and Adidas which is twice the price. But yes, getting right sizes is a definite issue. And pretty much everyone I have come across complains (legitimately) about the same issue. And I'm in the US.

They invest in tennis players just to get their global brand recognition - definitely not for tennis. Even in their 11-story HQ flagship store in Tokyo they barely had any tennis clothing. There wasn't even a section dedicated to Tennis. The tennis clothing was actually found hung in between the two aisles - the area where you make a U-turn to go to the next aisle. I did manage to grab 1 or 2 items and was happy with the quality - just not with their selection and/or availability.

I really like their products, but also had similar issues...

Uniqlo store opened in my area last year. Hey, that's the brand that Federer wears, let's go check it out!

What, no tennis gear, not even any athletic apparel? Darn...

But look at all this other apparel, they look very efficient, functional, look decent, and very well priced! Let's pick up a few.

Wow, love these products! Let's see if I could pick up some tennis gear online.

What, the new tennis gear is sold out after one week?! Darn...

But it looks like they have some other new activewear, let's check those out. Oh these are great!

Okay, I really like the black shorts Federer is wearing for the US Open, let's try to get it on day 1 that it releases.

… so after close to a year of discovering Uniqlo, I finally got my hands on their tennis specific gear, including hat, shorts, and wristband. No complaints, though, really. It's not like I can't get stuff from Adidas, Nike, or Lululemon if Uniqlo doesn't have what I want for tennis. :)

Interesting, because when I was in their Strasbourg store shortly after RG they had the polo of his RG outfit in both versions, so, how can they not know what they are selling (and also it is obviously not true that they didn't sell Fed outfits)?

The polos were located in the lower level (going down from the street level) right besides the staircase when you go down and turn sharply right.

The real question is: How many of you go to stores to shop? I work in a music store, local, that has been around since the mid 70s. We used to get all sorts of walk-in customers, and that's how I got a ton of students. Now most days we get almost zero traffic, so to get new students to come to me I have to reach them through the Net. Music lessons have not changed - learning an instrument over Skype or in a similar manner really is horrible, which a few students I DO work with that way tell me. You aren't in the same room, so as a teacher you can't guide people physically, such as moving or shaping their hands. You can't move around and see what you want to see from any angle. There are all sorts of problems with sound. Skype cuts off sound at the piano after about a second, so you can't even tell if the sustain pedal is down.

So once people know who I am, they still come to me, and I have a full schedule. But I used to advise the store as to what books to stock, and people used to come in all day to try digital pianos. Now half my new students have already bought something on line, although what the buy is usually horrible because they buy the wrong thing. People don't want to leave their homes, and frankly I don't blame them.

If I find clothing that works, I just have it delivered. I found one pair of shoes in a local store that are perfect for my feet, and since then I just keep ordering the same thing. Why do you want to shop in a store if you know what you like, what fits, and you can get it just as cheap or cheaper without getting into a car and driving, or walking somewhere?

How many threads like this have been made since 2012?

Regardless of how many such threads have been made since 2012 the number of such threads since 2018 has reached biblical proportions and always from the same type of people (hint: they were not the people that were making such threads between 2012 and the middle of 2018).

They feel the need to just do it.

Yep, but all the questions and items were the same. "Where do you get uniqlo? Will TW carry it? They didn't sign ND/RF to sell the tennis gear, but to promote the brand. UQ is not athletic apparel focused company. Went to the store because of ND/RF, ended up buying 99 pairs of jeans. Why are the items 100% polyester? He's wearing a PJ, the quality is crap. The quality is actually good and half the price of nike/adidas. The logo is ugly, why is it always red?" You could probably make a bingo out of those and more.

It's pretty common for employees to be unaware of some items they're selling. A person I know recently asked Lacoste online about ND green practice shirt from RG and they said it was never released. Even though it was in the fall season the year before.

That is true, but that is not the case if one really asks. Even if the store people don't know that this and this player is wearing it, they are generally able to identify the item by description. Maybe I was lucky, since in the very same store (Strasbourg) a helpful gentleman working in the store directed me straight to what I was asking for. I would give them a break in the case you describe, as no one really has a memory for all the items they sell from previous seasons unless they are fans of the very player that was wearing that item at specific time. It is also generally accepted by many employees to say things like that if they don't have it currently. They either say that an item is sold out or that to their knowledge it hasn't been released. That way they avoid to say things like "WE don't have it".

Not sure about the worst brand, I don’t like the marketing/production but I love their clothes, awesome and not as expensive with nice quality and fit. Biggest gripe is they don’t sell the tennis jackets so far. Have a couple of the older Novak and Kei jackets . Need a black one with and without hoods with the emblem :)

What is their revenue? Profits?
Before Federer / today?
Would $30M/yr. make a slightest dent on their overall number?
Is the investment paying off?

Then...how are they what you say they are?

UNIQLO is a member of the Fast retailing group, along with several other brands such as COMPTOIR DES COTONNIERS, Helmut Lang and Theory amongst others.
If you go to Fast Retailing Group page you will easily find their financial reports.

Operating profit in particular increased significantly since 2016, but it's fair to mention that in 2016 it dropped when compared with 2015.
Total number of stores increased from approx 2500+ to 3000+
EBITDA, Operating Profit, Revenues, everything is growing.

So I guess they are doing something right.

another same question.
I will copy and paste my previous answer from other threads since it's same issue.

Bring people to their uniqlo stores and online stores in order to buy life style products.
there are decent people who did not buy anything from Uniqlo then they started to buy T-shirts, casual pants etc.....
it’s a long term vision from Uniqlo whether it will pay off or not.
Honestly, Uniqlo owner just wants to show off his money in my opinion. Seems like the owner likes tennis.
It’s his money and he can do whatever he likes to do with his money.

spending 30 mils from $2.4 billion dollar revenue company, it’s nothing.
It’s like you make $100 million dollars per a year and spending a $30,000 wine for one-night dinner.
it’s nothing for them.

Uniqlo just reported that they just have a record profit which was about 9% growth despite of huge problems in South Korea because of “boycott” Japanese products ( revenue dropped over 40% in South Korea and closed some retail stores). This result clearly shows that their marketing is fine. Uniqlo is not a sport apparel company and they will never be.

cant take it any more. It’s like these people found out about uniqlo from federer and thought they were a sports brand like Nike.

I knew they weren't, but signing a marquee player like Federer sends a statement that they are looking to aggressively move into that sports apparel realm. This is why so many people are disappointed with their lack of availability in terms of sports apparel. Why aggressively throw money to sponsor a big name player if you had no plans to make any kind of splash into the sports apparel arena? To me it's like a big tease. I mean sure they are free to do what they like with their money, but chosing to be ***** and playing some ****ty ass marketing bait and switch game seems rather immature to me. They might make quality clothing, but I won't ever buy from them.

Dedication to a brand that continually plays games and dangles the carrot in front of your face.... I applaud you, but I would never reward a company that plays those kind of overt games with my hard earned money.

Yarp, the strategy, if there is one, is very odd. In a normal world there’s an expectation of generating revenue from the marketing spend but it’s hard to see how that’s the case with Fed and Uniqlo. Yo, TennisHands, forgive me, I’m speculating again but because TTW. Still, nice gear when you can get your hands on it but not as good as the more expensive brands (the adidas NY training pants I got today are vgood).

I usually just wait for the sales off like the previous season or two. Even then, I don't buy like the premier Rafa line Nike stuff, so it's not like 18 bucks for a shirt or 25-30 for a pair of shorts is outrageously high. I usually have my rotation of those Net Woven shorts with the side zipper pocket and then whatever shirts and socks and I'm good to play tennis or workout in. Heck, I'll even pick up some 5-7 dollar shirts from TW and just use those. :)

You'll never see Uniqlo in a mall n America....hardly ever see store in America. They're not in a hurry to expand that way.
Online and Asian stores is their niche.
They only signed Fed as a marketing tool.

Even American founded companies like JCPenney, Sears, Macy's, Forever21 are really struggling with their bricks and mortars stores. Everything is pretty much on Amazon these days.

I drive past them every day, located in the Paramus Park Mall in NJ. Their marketing managed to get the OP into not one but two of their stores, and getting people to come usually results in sales, so maybe they know what they're doing. OP probably didn't buy anything because he couldn't find a "hey don't I look just like Roger" outfit for himself.

The OP presented a story that turned out to be untrue (or at lest part of it), so I don't think that whatever strategy Uniqlo is after has anything to do with the OPs real actions. The way he came in with the intention to attack the brand tells a story beyond wanting to "look like Roger" (BTW, Federer wears a lot of their normal stuff, so the OP could actually "look like Roger). There is an enormous variety of tennis and athletic apparel out there, so there is no reason to get angry (at a brand no less) just because one cannot get something. I liked some of their offerings a lot and would have bought them, if they were available. Guess what: I had a hard time NOT buying more apparel to play tennis in than I already planned at the beginning of the season. I say "apparel to play tennis in" because some of it is not even a dedicated tennis gear, yet is a great buy and does the job just as well.

For example this running shirt

will compliment perfectly these

Believe it or not there are three(!) Uniqlo stores in a ~20 mile radius in the DC/MD/VA area... one in a major mall, one in a smaller outdoor mall (both are big stores), and a small mom and pop-style store at the Union Station.

That’s too many stores hahaha.
I can’t believe they don’t open any stores in Atlanta. Atlanta has huge tennis populations and Fed can bring those people to uniqlo store for not only tennis items but also casual apparels. Also, Uniqlo can compete with H&M stores.
probably if they open just one store in Atlanta or even dallas and Houston area, operating cost will be less than eastern or western city stores and might get more profits. they are opening new stores in same cities but totally ignoring southern parts. What a strange marketing strategy?

majority of the tennis wear (Nishikori/Federer) are on-line only... and I find them to be more comfortable than the nike and
at half the cost.
Just have to wait 3 months before anything gets restocked lol

I think they sell Huge into their non-tennis market meaning like billions there. so they don't have that hunger to get into Tennis market aggressively. I think they just want a piece of the pie into tennis market but nothing more at this point.

It’s terribly frustrating to see how nice the Uniqlo RF shirts are on him, with proper venting, brand patches, etc, and the crap they sell is so basic. They also took out the stretch and towel pockets on the Federer shorts. [emoji19]

The Nishikori gear for Aus Open 2020 must be the ugliest stuff they have released yet. And the NK line has been bad to mediocre at best. Just a Mish mash of lines, blocks and colors.

I got both RF & Nishi AO 2020 gear. Nishi's shorts come with the towel pocket liner but RF didn't. Previous RF shorts had the towel liner pockets. Maybe RF doesn't like them & wanted them out for his shorts? The towel liner stops the tennis balls from jiggling in the pocket. Works surprisingly well.

Yep the original stuff that came out had it, but even this year’s Wimbledon gear didn’t have it. I don’t think it has anything to do with what Federer likes, though, but rather profit for Uniqlo. If you look close, even the shirt Roger is wearing is nothing like what they sell to the public.

I take your point. The weave on RF's actual shirt seems somewhat different. Ironically the weave pattern seems similar to other regular (cheaper) Uniglo sports shirts. Bear in mind that RF Uniglo is almost half the price of the Nike equivalent. From experience they are quality & last longer because Uniglo stuff is stiched. I got tons of Nike RF & RN stuff that are no longer useable beacuse all the glued seams have delaminated!

Are the uniqlo tennis socks (not just regular socks) good? They always sell out in the first minute of their drop even at $7.50 a pair. I see them being resold on **** for $20+. I managed to snag some nishikori socks for AO 2020. They are nice, but I don't have much to compare to.

My Djokovic Uniqlo-socks are the best socks I have. I don't really like newest one, because they don't have foot and ankle support, and are more or less just regular sport socks.

"Foot and ankle support" from socks. Please.

The things that good quality socks provide are: moisture transportation while not being slippery, cushioning, durability. That is it.

I have experience with socks from X-socks with their elaborate body mapping design which is pretty much the most complicated piece of marketing one can see in that vein, and even they don't make such an outlandish claim.
