Nadal has now been ranked in the Top 10 of the ATP rankings non-stop for 17 years.

He first broke into the Top 10 as an 18-year-old on April 25th, 2005, rising from No. 11 to No. 7 after winning the first of his now-12 career titles in Barcelona. And despite all of his injuries over the years—he’s missed two Australian Opens, three Wimbledons and four US Opens since then—he’s never left the Top 10, not even for a week.

Today, a 35-year-old Nadal is ranked No. 4.

He’s held the record for longest Top 10 streak in ATP rankings history since November 2020, when he surpassed Jimmy Connors’ previous record of just over 15 years.

MOST CONSECUTIVE WEEKS IN TOP 10 IN ATP RANKINGS HISTORY (incl. this week):
866 weeks: Rafael Nadal (2005-present)
789 weeks: Jimmy Connors (1973-1988)
741 weeks: Roger Federer (2002-2016)
619 weeks: Ivan Lendl (1980-1992)
565 weeks: Pete Sampras (1990-2001)

Nadal’s weeks in the above chart do not include the 22 weeks the ATP rankings were frozen between March and August in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That's some pretty serious longevity right there
I'm amazed he managed to stay in the Top 10 despite getting injured and missing reasonable portions of certain seasons
He's that good. When he is not injured he amasses enough points to last him in his time out with injury. He has also spent far more time being ranked in the top two than outside the top 2.

Pretty amazing.

What's mind-boggling is that he has achieved it in spite of the numerous times away due to injuries.

Ah, this brings back memories...

... of RF fans claiming Nadal is a flash-in-the-pan clay bunny who plays on brute force alone, that his style of play destroys the body, he can't have a long career, that RF is superior because he can play for much much much longer.

Longevity was a huge word among RF fans then. How ironic things can get. Poetic justice?

What does being a Big 3 fan have to do with anything? Pro athletes all care about being the best in the world. That’s what they train and aim for

Best in the world means winning trophies, especially the slams. World No. 1 is merely a by-product of that, not necessarily a sensible goal in itself.

Lendl says it best:
Winning slams and being number 1 are obviously related but are two different goals. Tennis pros (and every other pro athlete) care about being the best in the world and make it an explicit goal. Only in TTW can anyone read comments that seem to indicate that being number 1 isn’t important for tennis players.

when Fed began winning slams again in 2017 he was asked if he could be number 1 again (beyond the few weeks he gained) and he said that while it would be great it was probably too difficult. It’s easier to win a slam then it is to reach number 1 and there have been more slam winners in the Open Era than players that reached number 1

Tell that to Dinara Safina and Caroline Wozniacki who were actually mocked for being world No. 1 without winning any slams.
Tell that to Marcelo Rios who is ranked more lowly than players who haven't got a 10th of his talent because he didn't win a slam.
There is no player in the history of the game who would sacrifice a slam for a No. 1 ranking. Not one. Do you think Bartoli would?

No. 1 is a side dish not a main.

PS Did you watch the video? Lendl himself has said on many occasions that No. 1 was never his goal, his goal was to win as many slams as possible and if he did so his ranking would take care of itself.

Mocked by whom, TTW posters? Lol

Marcelo Rios to this day is introduced as a “former number 1 in the world” tennis player, something only 27 players in the 50+ years of the Open Era (which probably includes tens of thousands of pro players) can claim.

there are plenty of examples of tennis players that want to be number 1 since they are kids and Murray may have destroyed his career pursuing the YE1

Yes, mercilessly. I see you only joined in 2015.

But he still ranks below Gaudio, Costa, Johansson, Krajicek and every other 1 slam winner who never got anywhere near No. 1. He ranks behind Bartoli whose highest ranking was No. 7. He already ranks behind Barbora Krejčíková and her career has barely started. A slamless world No. 1 has no credibility.

Lol, sure. Ríos is very worried what TTW has to say about him ;)

Well Fed did make that WB final at near 38. Rafa will have to make the final of 2024 RG to beat that (which he may well do but is yet to see)
