United Cup - Sydney

Swiatek is in absolute shark mode. This long term plan to become more serve dominant could start bearing more fruit on hardcourts in 2025.

Haddad Maia is just insane to me. Some days she’s top 10 but more often than not she looks like she’s not worthy of top 1000.
Do you think she’s too nice sometimes? She’s a physical beast. One of the best physiques on tour imo. It looks like sometimes she gets caught in long protracted defensive points rather than imposing the attacking power qualities of her game.

one game lost for Swiatek in her first destruction of the season
I don’t even think Helgo played badly either. She just kept having to press so much in rallies. There is no way she should be ranked outside the top 128 in the world. She looked pretty good. I hope we get to see her more often and in matches where she is not thrown against Swiatek playing like a battering ram.

What setup is it? I only heard something about an incorrect shipment lol. I hope Ruud plays well in 2025. Watching him go huge on the forehand is one of the best sights in tennis imo.
I didn't catch it exactly sounded like he got the wrong strings sent to him, so it might be all Poly Tour Pro or he got Strike instead of Spin or something like that or the wrong gauge - not sure exactly but they said he was playing with different strings than usual, but was dealing with it well whereas other players would have chucked a huge tantrum.

Very on brand for him to be so good about it. He seems like such a good guy.

Group B
- The winner between Czechia and Poland will win the group and advance to the quarter-finals.
- Norway has been eliminated.

Group D
- If Italy defeats France regardless of score OR if France defeats Italy 2-1, Italy will win the group.
- If France defeats Italy 3-0, France will win the group.

Group F
- If Great Britain defeats Australia regardless of score, Great Britain wins the group.
- If Australia defeats Great Britain 3-0, Australia wins the group.
- If Australia defeats Great Britain 2-1, the winner will be decided by sets won %, followed by games won %.

Italy through. Poland and UK favourites to go through also. Poland v Czechia is a straight match for the group win, although I think the result could still matter in determining the best runner up. (Has anyone run the scenarios for that one?)

UK v Australia is more complicated:

Group F
- If Great Britain defeats Australia regardless of score, Great Britain wins the group.
- If Australia defeats Great Britain 3-0, Australia wins the group.
- If Australia defeats Great Britain 2-1, but Great Britain wins a match in straight sets OR if they win a match in three sets and one other set, they win the group.
- Otherwise Australia wins the group.

So basically Boulter as the favourite in the first match will look to win in straights sets and ensure a group win. Harris having won a set against Etcheverry could turn out to have made the difference for them. It will be quite an achievement for Boulter if they make the QF, but they will likely be sacrificial lambs for Italy if they do.

Hubi playing horribly at the moment. Big racquet and shoe changes for him for the new season and it looks like he is struggling mightily.
Neither of these will help him, he is mentally too weak, always collapses in crucial moments.
Last year he was serving for the cup, and mentally disintegrated.

Matt ebden will be playing mixed for Aus. That takes away all the fun.
Demon should play against his fiancee in that match
It will almost certainly be a live doubles, too.

Olivia Gadecki will get stomped out in the first singles, then demon will win the second match.

excellent win from Iga...score definitely doesn't reflect the play, how tough a battle it was...nice match from Muchova too...good match-up

so the fiancees are going to hit some balls at each other today?
Quite an interesting situation…. De Minaur is playing, but Boulter isn’t.

And in the Australian doubles team De Minaur is being paired with Olivia Gadecki instead of Ellen Perez, who has been subbed out. Very strange decision imo given that Gadecki has been poor all week (A total of 9 games won in 2 matches) and Perez, who has been taken out to make way for Gadecki, is a top ranked doubles player.

Yeah..why de minaur is playing and not Boulter. The British captain looks like a non-romantic at heart

I think being a romantic is why he said Katie didn't have to play. It would be pretty hard to play a deciding doubles match against your fiancée and might potentially make for some interesting pillow talk :-D

Ok, so we have Poland v GB and Italy v Czechia for the Sydney QFs. Czechia went through by the slimmest of margins as best second-placed team over the host nation, 51.05% games won versus 49.52 for Australia.

Anything other than Poland winning their two singles would be a huge upset. Italy v Czechia is more intriguing. Paolini is much higher ranked now but has never beaten Muchova in 4 meetings. Machac and Cobolli have never played; Machac ranked a bit higher than Cobolli. He has also beaten Cobolli at a Challenger and in US Open qualifying, but that was two years ago, which can make a big difference at this age. The Italians have the better doubles team, so I'd give them the edge if the singles are split. A lot will depend on whether Paolini will break her duck against Muchova.

With good draw Demon can make a slam semifinal soon.

This year he was beaten by Sinner and Medvedev but had good match vs Fritz in ATP finals, the best of the best.

Last year he could play Djokovic in QF of Wimbledon and Draper in QF of USO, both makeable but he was hurt. In RG he lost to Zverev in QF but that is acceptable.

Boulter vs Swiatek has been fantastic. Boulter is playing awesome tennis and standing and banging with Swiatek even though her legs are going!

Poland get through.

Good win by Swiatek and what a performance by Boulter who's looking like she is more than ready for a good 2025!

Do you have details on the racquet changes?

He’s basically changed everything: New coach, new Racquet, new apparel and shoe sponsor. Just wholesale changes wherever you look.

New Year, New Hubi

3 days into 2025 and we have already had an epic. Seeing Boulter rise to the occasion and go toe to toe with Swiatek was so good. Boulter threw absolutely everything into that second singles to try and get a live doubles after Poland won the first singles. We almost had a crazy situation where Swiatek and Boulter might have doubled up and come back out for the doubles after playing a 3 hours singles match.
