Blake going down in 4 a bit of a surprise but not a huge surprise. But we can always count on Roddick and the Bryan bros.

Without a doubt, had Federer played, Switzerland would have won this tie 4-1 or maybe even 5-0.

Federer would have taken out both Roddick and Blake in singles, as expected. The fact the even Warwrinka and Allegro (who was terrible) took the Bryan brothers to a 4th set tiebreak means that Federer and Warwrinka would have probably beaten the Bryan brothers easily. Then you have Warwrinka beating Blake, which would have given Switzerland a 4-1 win, assuming that Roddick beats Warwrinka, which of course is not a sure thing. It's very possible for Warwrinka to beat Roddick, which would have given Switzerland a 5-0 shut out.

The U.S. team is VERY, VERY lucky that Federer pulled out.

Twice Wawrinka and the coach argued with the umpire over something, but we had no idea what - we couldn't see anything wrong or close decisions. One was the first point of the fourth game of the fourth set - Allegro served and Bob hit a good return and won the point.

Anyone know what the discussions were about?
I think in both cases, the Swiss team thought there was a letcord on the serve.

Federer is very very, lucky he pulled out with a fake back injury, otherwise he'd lose to Roddick *and* the Bryan brothers, with 16,000 fans behind them, and start crying all over again.

more like federer would show up on court and blake, roddick, and Bryan Bros would all crap their pants at the site of federer and Blake would start complementing roger for ever winner he hit. Its for the best of the US team that federer didnt show because none of the players IMO have a shot at beat fed in best of 5. btw I am american and want the US to win no doubt but winning with fed on the opposing team would have been impossible. P.S- that federer crying joke is just as overdone as the djokovic retiring joke. both are complete snoozers now.

IIRC, wasn't the umpire the same guy who made Jeff Tarango walk out on a Wimbledon match?
The umpire of today's match? No.

That was Bruno Rebeuh involved in the Tarango match at Wimbledon. He has been retired from officiating since about 2000.

I highly suggest you look up how many times Federer has beaten both Roddick and Blake in the past and how many times Federer has ever lost on U.S. soil. :-?

Oh, and while you're at at, look up who won the last time Federer/Wawrinka played the Bryan brothers. (Hint: It was at the Beijing Olympics.)

Wawrinka taking out Blake on Friday pretty much guaranteed that Switzerland would have won the tie had Federer played. Sorry to burst your bubble. :(

lol is right. Even with Federer don't think it would be a blowout. It would undoubtedly it would be closer but not a blowout.

Versus isn't showing the matches, but http://www.channelsurfing.net/ has a feed if anyone is interested hopefully it works.

Man, what are some of you guys smoking? How long have you guys been following tennis? Have you seen the last 27 times that Federer has played Roddick and Blake? Did you see Federer and Wawrinka beat the Bryan brothers in straight sets the last time they played? And have you been following this tie? You do know that Blake lost to Wawrinka, right?

I have faith in Andy, but it looks like Stanislas has a good game plan in place for today and is getting some feedback on each changeover while PMac is just relaxing on the bench

terrible call there on that ace by stan . . . but he holds anyway.
If Roddick was a gentleman, he would have given Wawrinka that ace. That serve was so clearly in it wasn't even funny. The linesperson who made that call should be replaced immediately.

Maybe not a blowout but we can now say with near certainty Swiss would have won the tie had Federer played. Federer is 95% likely atleast to have beaten both Roddick and Blake. Wawrinka has already beaten Blake. That is already enough.

I dont usually agree with BreakPoint but he is almost dead on here. By how competitive Wawrinka alone is without Federer the U.S would have had no shot of winning this tie with a healthy Federer playing. Only a blind homer could doubt that now.

roddick breaks first for 4-3.

what's all this crap gimelstob and robinson are babbling about . . . "roddick manufactures a break." what the hell is that supposed to mean? is that just their savvy tv way of saying 'roddick has a terrible return game, but hopefully the other guy will make a few ues and he can get a break!'

Nice FH dtl from Stan.

not that any of us have hit on that court . . . but has anyone heard about the speed? it doesn't seem all that quick to me. but maybe i'm just sleepy.

roddick holds for 6-4 after being down 0-30.

does gimelstob know what he's talking about? going on about how "limited" the wawrinka forehand is? it's his backhand that is letting him down.

Wawrinka is understandably upset- there seems to be some American favoritism going on. I generally get the impression that Roddick is being given the benefit of the doubt on close calls and Wawrinka isn't, and there have been one or two really ridiculous calls against Stan, like the ace that was on to inside the line and was called a fault, along with the break point early this set which saw Roddick lob off what looks on the replay to have likely been a double bounce and pull off the break.

I don`t understand why they got no hawk eye here?it`s a quick surface and there are a lot of close calls.Even in Romania there was a hawk eye device.

Can they please, please stop with the baseball references? Don't they realize that the majority of people who even care about Davis Cup could give a rat's *** about baseball?

No, because this DC match takes place in the US where baseball references makes sense to the locals. Just as the rest of the world is always using soccer references.

Guess you didn't see the first match where Blake got screwed on some bad calls.

Alabama must support a Redneck.
And now here comes the racism.

Congrats USA! Into the quarters we go. :D Thanks to Birmingham for doing a great job hosting this event.

I still say if Roger was here, Swiss would come out on winning end.

That is a pretty safe bet. Roddick or Blake were never going to beat Federer here. They each had their 1 fluke for the next 10 years already last year. Wawrinka beat Blake. That is already atleast 3 wins for the Swiss, enough for victory. The U.S should thank Federer a thank your telegram for not coming as it is the only reason they are advancing.

I think Roger would have won the doubles too if he played with Warinka.:)

Because US wanted to give American linespersons the opportunity to make bad calls favouring the US without the pressure of having the bad calls disputed via electronic system. Romania wanted the tie to be fair, which is why they provided for electronic line calling.

Ahem.

Indian Wells 2009:
B. Bryan/M. Bryan def. Y. Allegro/R. Federer 6-2 6-0

And people here actually believed that Federer playing doubles would've been a "lock" to beat the Bryans in Davis Cup, rotfl.

Allegro has 0 confidence at all. It`s like playing with one player against 2.He hasn`t won any match this year

In that case I don't understand why Federer is parnering him at IW??? Surely, Federer can partner anybody he wants to.

I have been trying to find this out and what I heard is:

1.Federer and Allegro have been best friends for years. After Federer won his first Wimbledon title in 2003, he played at a club run by Allegro's father. The club is at a tiny town of 3000 people. Nobody but Allegro believed the now famous Federer would honor his promise(Federer promised it before Wimbledon).

2. Allegro is a pure double player and depends on doubles to make ends meet.

3. Allegro was neither olympic or DC worthy in 2008. In 2009, He hasn't won any match.

In conclusion, Federer was doing Allegro an favor, so that his friend won't feel so left out and can earn some cash.

Roger is a very nice friend :), but the double match score did make us fans panicking:oops:
