UR in UTR

It would seem to me that UTR should have extended the period of retained matches to 2 years to account for the gap due to the pandemic.

Without that, there must be a whole bunch of players who no longer have a UTR. If one wants to enter a UTR tournmanent before having played any USTA matches that allow data to get into the UTR system, do you just state that you want to enter at level X?

Has anyone tried this and what have the results been? I'm thinking the group at that level would be more variable than pre-pandemic.

Just my opinion, but UTR’s problem of UR players is a lot deeper and widespread than just deciding whether to extend past the pandemic year.

How so? Isn't an UR player only UR until one match is played and then he will have a rating? Unlike USTA where it takes a lot longer for a self-rated NTRP to be confirmed or adjusted.

Its hard to tell much by reviewing players’ past results from prior years, because within a few years, half the players have UR next to their names. It would be much more useful if each match records the snapshot of the player’s UTR at the time the match was played.

I guess I’m just asking UTR to do the bare minimum of what just about every other rating system on earth does. Is that too much to ask?

I've spent the past five weekends working my way from UR to almost where I think my rating should be.

I now realize I went about it the wrong way. I should have appealed to the organizer in the very beginning when they put me up against a UTR 2s for my first matches. Instead I played it out and got a 3.5 rating for my 6-0 wins. Next week I played 3.5s.... etc etc. Last week finally I had my first legit competitive matches against UTR 6s. Won one, lost another. Rating now at 5.5 and rising. Probably will settle at 6 in a couple more weeks.

Yes, anyone that is UR, talk to the event organizer before playing, don't start at 2, work out the proper level, everyone will be better off that way, you, opponent and the director of the tourney.
