"The USTA has announced that the 2012 US Open purse has been increased by more than two million dollars to reach a record $25.5 million. Additionally, the top three men’s and top three women’s finishers in the Emirates Airline US Open Series may earn up to an additional $2.6 million in bonus prize money at the US Open, depending on their performance over the course of the summer Series. With this bonus money, the total US Open prize money could potentially reach $28.1 million.

The ATP said in a statement: "We are pleased that the discussions initiated by the ATP with each of the Grand Slams this year have resulted in certain prize money increases for players in 2012, and we remain focused on our active dialogue with these events about player compensation for 2013 and beyond."

For 2012, prize money has been increased by a minimum of 18% for the first three rounds of the main singles draw. Both the men’s and women’s US Open singles champions will earn a record $1.9 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money.

Jon Vegosen, USTA Chairman of the Board and President, said: "We recognise the mounting financial pressures associated with competing on the global professional tennis circuits and especially for those who do not reach the second week of the US Open. We believe the additional prize money, as well as how it will be strategically distributed, will help alleviate some of the pressure." "

So what exactly is the breakdown, and are they going to make the men's draw best of 3? Equal pay for equal work right?

How will they offset the increased prize money for the early losers? Increase fare rates for the US Open? Bullocks to the prize money increase, if you don't work harder then you don't eat.
