Can't look past Thiem but I would love to see Rafa v Juan Martin for the 4th time in the last 5 slams given that it has mostly made for great tennis. Wonder if JMDP would try something new strategically.

It will be cooler on Friday, gentlemen.

Delpo gets it done in four, another major SF. Rest up and recover big guy.

I believe it's Delpo's best slam year since 2009.
In 2018 he has made at least two semis (RG - USO) and a QF (Wim). (to be seen if he can better that next match)
Since the last 5 Slams, he has made at least 3 semis and a QF (to be seen if he can better that next match)

He have 2 semis of Major this year not 3.Wimbledon was QF

Both guys emptied the tank in this match. Quality was great at first and then lackluster from the middle of the second set. I still love to see players really fight in difficult conditions, though. These kinds of matches can have a unique beauty because it shows you how far these players are willing to push in seemingly impossible conditions.

Great job by Del Potro!

I hope Delpo's body doesn't break down for another major SF  Legs gave way in both of his last major SFs, with another possible grind fest against Rafa waiting in the next round in this heat and humidity, I do not like his chances. His first week matches were quite quick though and it's not like he's had to expend a tremendous amount of energy in this 3 plus hour match.

I think he will be fine. And he looks in the mood here. Nadal will not have it easy IMO, even if he will be the fav.

He made the QF of Wimbledon not SF.

He’s fine. Just another act from Del Possum.

Del Potro in 4 sets, as expected. Most likely the SF will be with Nadal. So far so good today! (:

Yeah, that initial post was possibly exaggeration from my part, after a second thought, I think he'll do better than I initially thought.

He really seems up for this slam. Just his attitude, it looks very positive. He came through what could have been a very tricky quarter, with Murray, Verdasco, Raonic, Wawrinka and Isner in it.

He will try:
A. To take advantage of the match being played on hard courts, the only surface on which he has ever beaten Nadal but one on which he is tied 5-5 in the head to head.
B. To take advantage of the two-day break and so not to run out of gas, as he did in both last year's semi-final and this year's Roland Garros semi-final.

If he can play Nadal on a surface that suits him more than Nadal while he is fresh, he has a good shot.

He may hope that they get the second semi-final slot, too. It is probably unlikely, because the other semi-finalists won't have had a two-day break, but Nadal v Del Potro might be a more exciting matchup than Cilic/Nishikori v Djokovic. The evening is a bit better for Del Potro, because it's less hot, and so is less of a strain on his stamina, plus it makes it harder for Nadal to get the ball up high and take advantage of Del Potro's slice backhand.

Del Potro could potentially lose to the same man at the slams across all three surfaces in the same season...

Can anyone tell me when did it last famously happen?

He's been celebrating most of his set points with a mighty roar this USO. The intensity doesn't show like a Nadal or Thiem, but it's there....

Couldn't see the match as I had lost all the interest on the US Open, but this is a monumental year for Juan Martín at the Grand Slams since 2009. You simply cannot ask for more, despite my love-hate relationships with the not so gentle giant. Truly hoping if he can snatch the Open again and finally prove he was the real deal. (also hoping that Nadal and lesser extent Djokovic doesn't go and win in Flushing)

Why do you have hate in the mix? You don't like much the olé olé olé?

3rd time into the US Open semis for Del Potro (prev '09 and '17) and a possible rematch with Nadal whom he lost to at that stage last year as well as at RG this year.

Thank God Isner lost, no offence to the man himself am sure he's a lovely chap but my God is he boring. To think people were saying it was a weak era a couple of years ago when now we have John ****ing Isner getting to grand slam quarters and semi. Sure puts everything in perspective doesn't it?

The draw let the two slam non-winners dispose of the still recovering 3x slam champions. He then had to chop down the Big Tree himself.

JMDP should be the most rested of the potential SFists, losing just the one set today and playing the first of the QFs. Thiem has three extra sets under his belt while Nadal played to four twice but had a 1R retirement by Ferrer.

Kei has been pushed to four only once too and had a retirement vs Monfils before the third set. Cilic played five once. Joe Kovic played to four twice already. Just the one day rest for that quarter. Advantage top half.

SFs are Friday, in much cooler conditions with 50% chance of rain. Indoor tennis is a real possibility.

I agree. Nadal is no superman like people make him out to be. His problem is that his playing style is just not efficient and so it is taxing.
His technique is very very unorthodox. His forehand takes so much effort (and sometimes for so little result). Even the backhand looks weird. The follow-through, footwork - he almost seems to muscle the ball.
But yeah, he has 17 slams, so what do we know, although I suspect the slams are more due to his competitive spirit and fight, as opposed to his technique.
Agree. I watched Nadal's 3rd and 4th round matches and they made me feel Nadal was getting old for the first time. He looked exhausted on the court. Could not bash the ball to attack consistently, missed a lot of easy forehand shots and got broken frequently by largely unknown players. Maybe these were just out of the heat and humidity.

My old hate for Juan has all but disappeared, but I still have my reservations, like his inopportune timeouts and woe-is-me attitude, and also a species of hate because of the way Roger Federer plays against Delpo makes me mad. To be honest, I may the only Chilean that I have a certain liking for Juan Martín, go to El Mercurio o La Tercera (the two biggest and best newspapers of my country) and you'll truly understand me.
