One of the rare times Nagal has pressed on a shot, has been pretty balanced today with excellent shot selection.

Fed takes it, pretty stern opening test.

Federer most definitely got confused by Nagal/Nadal in the first set

Elephant memory fedr doesn’t rememberer he has played Dzum Dzum only twice but in consecutive slams (RG’15, Wimby’15), both wins in straight sets.

Federer looked haggard tonight. Will need to improve about 5 levels to make a run for this title. Good thing he didn't draw someone more dangerous or he would have been in trouble.

In Wimbledon also he looked average in first round but he improved a lot. Not saying Roger will automatically raise his level. Maybe he never expected this today as Nagal was hitting hard.

It's not ideal match but then all is good as long as he survives the match.

The kid played some really solid hard court tennis, swinging freely from both wings and covering the court like..a 22 yr old. If he had a top level serve things could have been different. But take the first set away and Fed stepped up as well, at least once he realized just ball bashing wasn't going to break down his opponent's shots. Once he started with some variety things opened up a great deal and gave him a better opportunity to hit clean baseline winners.

honestly, Federer should be able to make QFs even playing like this, there he would meet Nishikori or maybe De Minaur, I'd give him a 50-50 chance against them if he plays like he did today

This match looked a lot worse for many reasons. But at his age it is a day to day thing. If he gets through tough days like this, hopefully he wont have anymore for a while.

I don't care about H2H. It will be legendary if he beats Novak and Nadal back to back and win this at 38.

I mean it is extremely unlikely that Fed will beat Novak. I could say he would beat Nadal, but beating Novak is probably impossible unless the Serbian is injured.
This is not grass. Fed won't be able to hit through Djokovic. I really can't imagine Fed taking 3 sets off of Novak.

For our Indian friends here, is Nagal famous or at least well known in India? At #190, I'd doubt it, but not sure?
He wasn't known before this at all.
An article on him published couple of days back when he qualified for USO main draw, so Indian tennis fans got to know him.

Yesterday Indian Cricket captain & most popular Sportsman in India Virat Kohli posted about him on his INSTA so I guess people atleast recognise that name now.

He's way too erratic and his balance is all over the place. I think the slower surfaces were helping him as he seemed slow here tonight and in Cincy. Needs to improve quite a bit.

Pretty cool story for him regardless of the result.

I always give him a chance in any match he plays but his best chance to beat Novak was on that low bouncing grass. Novak has a tricky draw though so any opening can help Federer, but if he plays like he did tonight he won't be the one to take advantage of it.

I love the optimism. You go on to the court and leave it all out there. If your opponent is better, you shake his hand and congratulate. That's the spirit.
