While this is indeed true, I don't think it excuses Thiem or Zverev in any way. Never have I seen a men's major final where the guy rolling 2nd serves over the net was serving for the title. It was embarrassing tbh. And neither wanted to hit a winner towards the end of it. They just waited on errors, and one guy finally out-errored the other. Maybe Coria's choke comes close, but even then I'm not sure.

Don't think I've seen worse quality in a major final than this.

I sort of agree. I mean, there were some superb shots at times, one memorable down the line scorcher from Thiem on an important point in the last set sticks in the mind. I’m more prepared to give Thiem a pass, he was clearly struggling physically towards the end and I think that muddled his strategy. No such excuse for Zverev though, rolling the serves in. I mean, I’m 5’7 and that’s how I usually serve, but Zverev is 6’6!!! And does it for a living! I’m really trying not to be harsh but that’s really embarrassing for the top level of the sport...

And Thiem not moving up on the serves was also disappointing to see. Strange match.

:D

What a gift (y)

All of the ATG's have lost slam matches when they were up 2-0. This was a valiant and mature effort from Zverev-- he will win multiple slams in the future. He changed his game plan and played inspired tennis for 2.5 hours. (y)

Oh right - from what I've been reading this was the worst tennis of all-time!!!

I think there was a lot of good tennis in this match. There was also a lot of mediocrity. But I think the thing that is really leaving a sour taste in the mouths of the fans isn't so much the quality on a shot by shot basis - which was frankly not half bad - but the mentality and approach of the players.

I don't like him but I agree. Dominic's FH cross court hurts even Djokovic. But Zverev was not only held his own but even made Thiem retreat. Not to mention I was mighty impressed with his net game.

Which is fair considering both of today's finalists are mediocre compared to the big 3 and always will be. The good tennis actually came from Z early on: attacking the net successfully, behaving maturely, hitting his FH down the line instead of cross court. But Domi hung in there and wore him down. He should have won in straights, hopefully this will teach him some lessons.

Thiem has to be the LEAST DESERVING grand slam champion in the HISTORY of Tennis. In terms of talent and game.

There are so many slamless players who are SO MUCH BETTER than Thiem.

But yeah, Big 3 are out and Thiem wins. It's a pity for all those talented players who never won a slam.
Didn't see these complaints when you guys gleefully jumped on the weak era bandwagon so shut up about it now.

Wawrinka Berdych 2014 AO semi was a pretty terrible match. Nobody remembers it because of who Wawrinka played before and after.

I was at that match. It was incredibly dull. It was so uneventful that I actually misremembered it as having no breaks of serve, only tiebreaks. But it seems Berdych dished one up in the first set.

Still, probably better for me than watching Nadal spam Federer backhand to death in the other semi-final though, that was bad enough watching on TV.

Too much pushing for my taste. Neither really took the initiative often eniugh. Thiem resorted to a slice BH in the final set and Z's serve was pitiful as expected.

I can’t explain Tim’s timid start, but Zedly came out lights out with heart of champion. Yeah eventually 2nd took him down, but way, way better from him than expected.

I can agree. There was a lot of "fake aggression" in this match... lots of ball pounding without really pulling the trigger much. But also their court positioning was often so deep that they were able to cover each other even when attempting to pull the trigger. Overall, neither player used enough short angles to unbalance the other and they were trigger shy.

There were good patches in the match and the ball-striking was still good. The mental and tactical approach from the players was frustrating for long stretches of the match - perhaps even damning.

So, ya know - mixed feelings. But I'm higher on this match than most others (are on this match).

Thiem now joins a select company of 8 current players who hold at least 1 Slam title and of 3 current players who hold just 1 Slam title (each of whom won it at the US Open).
He also becomes the 1st player from Austria to win the US Open and the 2nd to win a Grand Slam title.
He also becomes the 1st player in the Open Era to win a US Open final from 2 sets down.

This is also the 1st time in US Open history that the final was decided in a 5th set tie-break.

Maybe the surreal experience of playing a Slam final in these unprecedented circumstances?

The whole thing was strange. Also curious to hear reports on Thiem's foot and general fitness over the next few days and what his plans for clay are.

Accurate analysis, but Tim beat superior Medly version in straights with the slicearama and consistency; Dull can’t say that.:sneaky:

I think no play until RG. After this match Hamburg wildcard out.

Probably has left Muster already in the major results dust?

yes in the last 150 years of the sport this is the one truly exceptional time, when someone with a high ranking and good past results wins a trophy

this result is shocking, and, most importantly, disgusting. what are the officials going to do to make sure this never happens again? i for one demand a full inquiry preceded by a full refund
