Thiem should buy Zed a second serve.Thiem should buy Zed something nice, kinda feel bad for him

While this is indeed true, I don't think it excuses Thiem or Zverev in any way. Never have I seen a men's major final where the guy rolling 2nd serves over the net was serving for the title. It was embarrassing tbh. And neither wanted to hit a winner towards the end of it. They just waited on errors, and one guy finally out-errored the other. Maybe Coria's choke comes close, but even then I'm not sure.
Don't think I've seen worse quality in a major final than this.
What a gift![]()
All of the ATG's have lost slam matches when they were up 2-0. This was a valiant and mature effort from Zverev-- he will win multiple slams in the future. He changed his game plan and played inspired tennis for 2.5 hours.Zverev did lead 2 sets to none and served for the title afterward. Truly pitiful.

And endless mobs here post "Fed 2003-2007 was weak era!" Safin, Baggy, Nalby, Davy or Hewitt never choked anywhere CLOSE to what happened today.at least Nishikori vs Cilic was high quality ball striking, this was just choke city
I don't like him but I agree. Dominic's FH cross court hurts even Djokovic. But Zverev was not only held his own but even made Thiem retreat. Not to mention I was mighty impressed with his net game. All of the ATG's have lost slam matches when they were up 2-0. Which is fair considering both of today's finalists are mediocre compared to the big 3 and always will be. The good tennis actually came from Z early on: attacking the net successfully, behaving maturely, hitting his FH down the line instead of cross court. But Domi hung in there and wore him down. He should have won in straights, hopefully this will teach him some lessons.I think there was a lot of good tennis in this match. There was also a lot of mediocrity.
Didn't see these complaints when you guys gleefully jumped on the weak era bandwagon so shut up about it now.Thiem has to be the LEAST DESERVING grand slam champion in the HISTORY of Tennis. In terms of talent and game.
There are so many slamless players who are SO MUCH BETTER than Thiem.
But yeah, Big 3 are out and Thiem wins. It's a pity for all those talented players who never won a slam.
Wawrinka Berdych 2014 AO semi was a pretty terrible match. Nobody remembers it because of who Wawrinka played before and after.Oh right - from what I've been reading this was the worst tennis of all-time!!!
I think there was a lot of good tennis in this match. There was also a lot of mediocrity. But I think the thing that is really leaving a sour taste in the mouths of the fans isn't so much the quality on a shot by shot basis - which was frankly not half bad - but the mentality and approach of the players.
It was easyLmao good prediction. Except for the easy part.
Against much worse opponents too. I can forgive Fed choking to ClutchovicBoth Zverev and Thiem choked harder than Fed 40-15.

Too much pushing for my taste. Neither really took the initiative often eniugh. Thiem resorted to a slice BH in the final set and Z's serve was pitiful as expected.Oh right - from what I've been reading this was the worst tennis of all-time!!!

I can’t explain Tim’s timid start, but Zedly came out lights out with heart of champion. Yeah eventually 2nd took him down, but way, way better from him than expected.Oh right - from what I've been reading this was the worst tennis of all-time!!!

Lol. Slice won Tim another big match. Zedly serve much betterer than expected on the whole.Too much pushing for my taste. Neither really took the initiative often eniugh. Thiem resorted to a slice BH in the final set and Z's serve was pitiful as expected.

Accurate analysis, but Tim beat superior Medly version in straights with the slicearama and consistency; Dull can’t say that.I can agree. There was a lot of "fake aggression" in this match... lots of ball pounding without really pulling the trigger much. But also their court positioning was often so deep that they were able to cover each other even when attempting to pull the trigger. Overall, neither player used enough short angles to unbalanace the other and they were trigger shy.
There were good patches in the match and the ball-striking was still good. The mental and tactical approach from the players was frustrating for long stretches of the match - perhaps even damning.
So, ya know - mixed feelings. But I'm higher on this match than most others.
Coria’s miss was more pitiful.Zverev did lead 2 sets to none and served for the title afterward. Truly pitiful.
I think no play until RG. After this match Hamburg wildcard out.Maybe the surreal experience of playing a Slam final in these unprecedented circumstances?
The whole thing was strange. Also curious to hear reports on Thiem's foot and general fitness over the next few days and what his plans for clay are.
Far more as he was a clay goat at that time.Coria’s miss was more pitiful.
Thiem will win last 3 sets
Probably has left Muster already in the major results dust?Thiem now joins a select company of 8 current players who hold at least 1 Slam title and of 3 current players who hold just 1 Slam title (each of whom won it at the US Open).
He also becomes the 1st player from Austria to win the US Open and the 2nd to win a Grand Slam title.
He also becomes the 1st player in the Open Era to win a US Open final from 2 sets down.
This is also the 1st time in US Open history that the final was decided in a 5th set tie-break.

yes in the last 150 years of the sport this is the one truly exceptional time, when someone with a high ranking and good past results wins a trophyThiem has to be the LEAST DESERVING grand slam champion in the HISTORY of Tennis. In terms of talent and game.

There are many but not in finals.Didn't realize this was the first men's U.S. final to end in a fifth set tiebreak
Does anyone remember a slam where both guys had a chance to serve for the match and failed?
Z wins his first slam. Congrats to Zverev
Easiest forehand ever so it had to go in the net
If you consider open era only. Last it happened in 1949. Pancho Gonjales was the winnerSasha is the first guy to lose a 2-set lead in US Open final. Wow. That rubs it in more.
