Too me till this day USO 2012 was the worst quality Slam final since I started watching Tennis. Didn't watch this but surely looks like pretty bad stuff. So probably will watch and decide whether this match outdid USO 12 Final or not.

Anyway congrats Thiem. Very well deserved Slam after making four Slam Finals. I didn't expect you struggle so much against Zverev.

Something must have been up with Thiem physically because he went almost exclusively chips ahoy on the backhand side the last few sets. Hard to believe he came back to win considering that plus the deficit and the cramping late in the 5th set.

Our IT project manager just recently quit because she had to go to Austria back in July for family reasons and then her husband got offered a position and accepted it, so she's moving there. I didn't even realize that she had been there since July and was working remotely the whole time. I'm happy for her, but I'll definitely miss working with her, because she did so much working within our systems.

She said she's about 30 or so minutes outside of Vienna too. I almost wanted to be like, "hey if you ever see Dominic Thiem, please get his autograph for me!"

I think a lot of you are wearing rose tinted spectacles when comparing this final with previous finals. Great finals are about drama more than anything else and this had it in spades.

Even the hallowed Wimbledon 2008 and Australian Open 2012 finals were riddled with errors and chokes. Everyone remembers those incredible passing shots in the 4th set tiebreaker in '08, and Herculean effort from Nadal to save break points deep in the 4th set in '12, but nobody remembers all those dreadful netted forehands from Federer or Nadal losing all faith in his serve in the early sets of those respective matches.

Will Zverev have more chances? I feel like not having a crowd helped him go through the draw because it calmed him down. A crowd-less slam is probably not going to happen again.

He made it to the SF of the AO this year, with a crowd. I think he will be fine. Just really need to work on that serve. And with more experience in the latter stages of a slam, he will hopefully improve mentally.

Djokovic and Murray do not bring out the best tennis in each other, with an exception of a few matches. The wind also played a large factor in the quality as well.

This is true. For better or for worse, that outcome of this match was in doubt until the very end; the same cannot be said for say, the 2003 AO final that had Agassi beating Schuettler black and blue in straight sets.

And he almost did, you could see him running out of gas before your eyes lol. It's one thing if he was great at slicing like Nadal/Federer, or it was doing damage, but he was just doing nothing with his slices and Zverev was picking them off for winners.

I left the match at 2-1 in sets to Zverev.
Watched the replay this morning.
Managed to set the replay up from that point with no idea who would win.
High drama, not the best tennis at times. Painful at times.

Zverev graceful in defeat. He was so, so close, but no!

i can't see him ever beating one of the top 3 GOAT's if he has to play them in the final of a Major in the future. Sasha will have to wait til they retire from looks of things

Medvedev I agree, Tsitsipas I am not really sure, and I am more and more losing faith in Shapo, that PCB loss was awful.

I get your point but in none of those matches you watched the pushing of this last set and the abysmal serving, under 100mph. I know, they were tight as ****, but come on, this looked more like a final of a social event in a local club than a Grand Slam final. Be real, this was painful to watch. For me, Gaudio-Coria was better, and in the first chance to win Gaudio went for it and took it. I love Thiem and I am more than willing to cut some slack for the physical problems, but Zverev is completely guilty for this show, specially because how brilliantly he played for 2 sets and 3 games...

Well it certain was a dramatic match maybe fir not all the right reasons. Congrats to Thiem on his first slam and it’s hard to knock anyone who comes back from two sets down to win. But......

Zverev choked this match. Plain and simple. Two sets up, serving for match at 5-3, then 2-1 up in the breaker with having a big serve like his. He should’ve won this match no doubt

I have never seen a final where a player was cramping that badly. Thiem hit several first serves in the 90 mph range. He was clearly hurting. Zverev forgot how to play the net. He clearly froze like a deer in headlights. It was surreal. Zverev came out like gangbusters in the first two sets. He played the net extremely well and he was ripping ropes from both wings. His aggressive style of play really paid off early on.

But Thiem never gave up. You have to admire Thiem’s fight.

Zverev might have actually won me over as a fan. He was quite gracious in defeat. And of course, I have always liked Thiem.

This is a glimpse of what we will watch once the big 3 retire. The tennis is worse quality for sure, although most of the top players seem evenly matched.

One guy with no legs and the other serving 30-40 mph less in the 5th set? I don't recall seeing that weak conditioning from the big 3.
And even if you find a video of it, I won't watch.

Zverev is completely guilty for this show, specially because how brilliantly he played for 2 sets and 3 games...

McEnroe actually predicted much of the outcome at the beginning of the third set when things looked very bleak for Thiem. Mac said that he had gotten to know Zverev at Laver Cup and said his biggest weakness was not being able to mentally hang in for extended periods.

At 3-2 in the third, Mac said, “we’re starting to see Zverev not being as mentally engaged, I’ve seen this before. It’s like his brain switches off after the 2 hour mark in matches.”

Yeah that was amazing. I don't think I saw him play the ball away from Thiem once when Zed was at the net. Every shot went right back to Thiem. That's not you win net points..
