when did thiem start cramping up? turned on the match close to tie break

also why was he slicing so many backhands back? to avoid heavy leg contraction needed to do 1hbh and thus avoid bad cramps? or also to conserve energy bc slices are less taxing?

Oh right - from what I've been reading this was the worst tennis of all-time!!!

I think there was a lot of good tennis in this match. There was also a lot of mediocrity. But I think the thing that is really leaving a sour taste in the mouths of the fans isn't so much the quality on a shot by shot basis - which was frankly not half bad - but the mentality and approach of the players.
We have not talked in a long time, and I did not get to see any of this match. I hope eventually that will change. Covid has changed everything. We had to let a lot of things go, including Tennis Channel. I don't have a recorder yet, or another to get the tennis, so I'm on hiatus re watching. So I can't comment on the tennis.

But personally I just have to be glad that finally there is an end to Big 3 dominance. It wasn't great tennis? Not all finals are, and I'd guess in advance that the idea that this is the worst final ever in a slam is pure rot.

Also, give the year that we have had I think a lot of people are awfully hard on a couple guys that to me are barely more than children. Man, when I think of what I was like at age 23, I'm in awe, really.

That backhand slice was so over done at times he had good position to hit. Gotta be something there he is working on we don’t realize.

Tim cramped when serving for the final set; he's gone ballistic with super winners for quite a few points before that and some very high tension drama.

Today’s match was only the fifth comeback win from two sets down in a major final in the Open era. Domi becomes the first player do it away from the FO:
  • 1974 French Open – Borg def Orantes, 2–6, 6–7, 6–0, 6–1, 6–1
  • 1984 French Open – Lendl def McEnroe, 3–6, 2–6, 6–4, 7–5, 7–5
  • 1999 French Open – Agassi def Medvedev, 1–6, 2–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4
  • 2004 French Open – Gaudio def Coria, 0–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1, 8–6
  • 2020 US Open – Thiem def Zedzilla, 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6

It ended up being dramatic, but I'm not sure how good it was.

Thiem never should have been down that far to begin with, but Zverev should not have squandered that lead once he had it - and the lead in the 5th.
There is no doubt that Z crumbled at the end and Tim's cramping was quite suspicious as far as it might've been induced by the pressure of the moment.

Weird that it’s never happened at Wimby. You’d think it would be most likely there

Which is fair considering both of today's finalists are mediocre compared to the big 3 and always will be. The good tennis actually came from Z early on: attacking the net successfully, behaving maturely, hitting his FH down the line instead of cross court. But Domi hung in there and wore him down. He should have won in straights, hopefully this will teach him some lessons.
Except for Federer who they own.:-D

Thiem hit some sick passing shots and Zverev came up with a few great volleys.

I tip my hat off to both players for playing a match filled with drama.

That was completely CLASSLESS from Thiem. Lack of humanity and sportsmanship. Most importantly class.
He barely squeezed the match with a LOT of luck. But he couldn't stop laughing at Zverev's face. Total lack of consideration.
Can't wait for Thiem's next choke in a slam final.
How did you like Tim choking his way to victory? Even made history.

While this is indeed true, I don't think it excuses Thiem or Zverev in any way. Never have I seen a men's major final where the guy rolling 2nd serves over the net was serving for the title. It was embarrassing tbh. And neither wanted to hit a winner towards the end of it. They just waited on errors, and one guy finally out-errored the other. Maybe Coria's choke comes close, but even then I'm not sure.

Don't think I've seen worse quality in a major final than this.
you must have amnesia.

And what does that have to do with anything? Ridiculous parameter. Nobody here is being paid 40 million a year to hit a fuzzy yellow ball.

If you read my post carefully, you'd notice that I was responding to the quoted ridiculous comment that they missed the "Easiest forehand ever." So if Thiem and Zverev can't return the easiest forehand ever, then what does that say about every casual tennis player here who would be utterly destroyed by them on the court?

at least Nishikori vs Cilic was high quality ball striking, this was just choke city
that match had a lot of build up but Nishikori flat in the final so I don't know what you were watching, but certainly the expectations were higher for Nishikori in that one then for Zed here. you have to look at the players body of work as a whole and then you'll realize that that final was mug city despite Cilic amazing serving; no denying that. It's rather amazing that Cryic really never found that level again on serve.

Too me till this day USO 2012 was the worst quality Slam final since I started watching Tennis. Didn't watch this but surely looks like pretty bad stuff. So probably will watch and decide whether this match outdid USO 12 Final or not.

Anyway congrats Thiem. Very well deserved Slam after making four Slam Finals. I didn't expect you struggle so much against Zverev.
