Previous USO clash -
2023 US Open QF - Djok def. Fritz 61 64 64

Fritz is the defending finalist from 2024, having lost to Sinner then. Its his 3rd consecutive QF at US Open.
On the other hand, its Novak Djokovic's 64th slam QF & 14th at the US open (2007-16, 2018, 2021, 2023).
This is also a first match between these two when Djokovic would be the lower ranked player, in all their previous clashes he was ranked higher than Fritz.
This would be a night session match & winner is to face the winner of Alcaraz v/s Lehechka which is the day session QF.
Who wins? How many sets? Vote and discuss.

The betting odds right now:

Djoker is a -175. You need to bet 175 to profit 100.

These betting odds are much closer than I thought that they’d be.

That said, I’m taking Djokovic in 4. Djoker will blink for one set.

Man, I just don't have a bunch of confidence in Fritz. If Djokovic is still hurting somehow. If Fritz can keep his head about him and not gift Novak a bunch of points. If those two things are true, Fritz will win, maybe in four. I just don't think both of those things will happen at once. It's going to be the old man vs in all likelihood Alcaraz in the semifinal.

What record will he be breaking at that point, @Hitman?

If Djokovic wins, he will be oldest player to make the semis of a slam on all three surfaces, at 38 years of age.

I doubt this goes 5 regardless of the winner. Obviously given the h2h and resumes of the two, it feels like the most obvious Novak cruise-to-victory ever. But I could also see this being very similar to something like the Djokovic/Popyrin match last year, where Novak just couldn't get anything going on return and generally played not great. Novak's level has looked great this tournament but it's a much more fickle thing than we'd like to believe, I think. Though I don't think Fritz will ever really cross the plane to "elite," he's still playing the best tennis of his career.

I'll lean Novak in 4 but Fritz getting his first win in the h2h would hardly surprise me.

I was thinking that myself Hitman. I know Rosewall reached 4 slam S/F after he turned 38 (including 2 finals at age 39), which was incredible. However, i believe they were all on same surface grass as back in 73/73 THe Aussie open, Us Open & Wimbledon were all on grass.

The above actually just points out on how hard it really is to compare greatness across eras due to slam surface changes

I think your summation is about right. I know Gil Gross said something similar in his review of match.

He goes for Novak in 5 but thinks it will be tight either way.

Novak is straights. Fritz is the biggest mental midget who is overmatched by Novak's steadiness and game.
There is a reason Fritz has won ONLY 2 sets in his entire career vs Novak.
In short: Fritz is Novak's PIGEON.

Shame the USTA didn't put Fritz on Ashe once this tournament before this match. No other slam would treat a hometown player who's the #4 seed like this. Have heard Ashe plays a lot slower than the other courts, so not getting to play on there is a bit of a disadvantage.

I want a Djokovic-Alcaraz semi. I do have a lot of respect for the player Fritz has turned into but, lets be real, I think most want the Djokovic-Alcaraz matchup.
I respect fritz too. He improved as a player and this will be a tough match. A close one. Alcaraz a big favourite to reach final and if Sincaraz happens it 50/50 again.

This will be a tough 5 set match for Djokovic.

He's clearly not at his best and dealing with many injuries, but Djokovic's mental strength and will to win is simply unmatched. Djokovic is fully locked in to win #25 at the USO this year, so he's winning this match.

He’s the same player. A guy with good ground strokes and serve but below average movement for a professional. Movement will always be his Achilles heel. You have to have elite movement.
Very accurate. The two best players in the world are the two best movers on tour. It is the #1 prerequisite to be elite in this day and age.

I think the question now is more whether you can get away with subpar movement vs. Novak if you serve and hit your ground strokes well

+1

But Egg is old. :) If prime Fritz can’t beat oldEgg the tour shut be shut down and Egg crowned weak era GOAT.

If Djokovic wins, he will be ranked higher than Fritz again.

Another really disappointing day for tennis fans on showcourt with 2 dud quarter finals and a walkover.

I suspect the crowd will be praying for an epic 5 setter with Djokovic and Fritz and they might just get lucky.

Definitely think at very least it will ve 4 hard fought sets and decent chance of 5 setter.

I will go for Novak but think there will not be much in this.

Either way, ccannot see either of them getting past Carlos in next round.

8 pm now, to make the poor fans wait even longer... actually, most likely not poor fans at all, considering the ticket prices!
Ticket prices? I was there the other day and $16 beers.

The tennis is great, and it's my fav Grand Slam. I saw higher prices at Wimbledon. Most overrated slam.

I will be back for the Final!

Fritz made a good point. He said that the player who went down to Novak most of those times was a much younger player not remotely at this level. He has had chances in their more recent matches and I would not be surprised to see him win.
