US Open made for Television?

I have been speculating a lot during this US Open.. some things seem "too good" to be true..Especially with the pairings..i swear everything is ste up for television --Donald Young vs. James Blake first round---Andy Roddick vs Fabrice Santoro and Roddick getting a night match every round...over 4 seed David Ferrer playing a 2nd round match on court 5...come on there seems to be some favoritism here and there

In Andy Roddick getting all night matches? Of course that's for TV. Scheduling and court selection is done to get the players that they think fans want to see on the biggest courts at the best time. It's also irrelevant, it's not like matches are easier or harder to win for the top players on different courts.

The draw, however, is random.

Borg used to complain that things were run to favor American players, especially when he was given a night match against Roscoe Tanner, since the inferior night light makes returning against a huge server problematic. Perhaps that rationale got Roddick all those night matches this year?

Of course they are showing favortisim towards Americans. And Roddick did play a day match last Sunday because CBS had the coverage.

Listen, it happens at Wimby too. Murray got all his matches on Centre Court. Even though Hewitt sucks now he would still get his matches on Laver Arena and alot of them being evening matches to boot. That is if he survives long enough to get more than 2 on main court.

Wow, what a scandalous surprise to find out that the U$TA runs the USO to maximize the amount of money it gets from ticket sales and TV revenue. I thought they held this event to make the world a better place.

The draw is random, just like at all the other Slams. If it was fixed, James and DY would not have played in the first round, the Americans would have been spread out to help them stick around longer.

I don't believe the draws are rigged. That's outlandish.
But the scheduling has always been determined almost exclusively to maximize revenue from television, to a much greater extent than any other major, and with much less regard from players. The list of players who have commented on this is probably long. I distinctly remember John McEnroe complaining about it in the early 80s, long before he lost the 85 final after playing a long five setter with Wilander the night before. Since he is part of the television establishment, he hasn't said much. But definitely, television controls the USO much more than any other major.

Bad coverage..............

I live in Israel and I've never seen such a bad coverage of a Tennis tournament as that from the EUROSPORT company(ONLY ONES TO BROADCAST TO EUROPE AND MIDDLE EAST)...I had to see exclusively excerpts of the matches and no complete ones...from the WTA I saw up to the moment three incomplete matches...AND THE THREE WERE PLAYED BY JANKOVIC!!!!!!!!!! ....How much did she pay to Eurosport for that coverage?...So I can guess that I missed 70% of the tournament due to a faulty coverage.....

Allez Alize!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me how a 4 seed FERRER had to play on court 5 in his 2nd round match..UNBELIEVEABLE--he was basically treated like a nobody

yes..most tv viewers plainly have never seen him play at all..and don't care for that matter.Welcome to the real world.

Exactly most people didnt get the chance to see him play--he was busy playing on court 5 and armstrong --and i have to say that they showed nothing of his early matches--they only showed the ending of the Nishikori match---no tell me how can that be...he was a 4 seed in the tourament--

The draw, however, is random.

Yes, but not completely. Some seeded players are strategically placed in the draws, so that top seeds do not play each other too early in the tournament. Nobody would like to see Nadal play Federer in the 1st round...

but the CBS can't put him on,basing on gut instinct on what some tennis fans might find interesting.I don't say this is the best for tennis,I say this is how things work. The popular gets the big courts and the prime time.Simple as that.

Like it or not, Roddick is our "it" guy so we expect a lot of his matches will be shown.

I did think the Blake/Young match was a bit too coincidental, especially on the night Arthur Ashe was being honored.

Arthur Ashe wasn't being honored that night.
