US Open Qualifying: Day 1 and 2....

Milan

Rookie
US Open Qualifying has started. Ryan Harrison won pretty easily, as did Kendrick. Few other good players in the tournament... and should be interesting.

However, the weather has been a main issue. I was there yesterday, and many players were complaining about the wind, rain, cold weather. I don't know where this weather came from, as the entire summer was Sunny and Hot. It's terrible people train for the entire summer, and in some cases years, for a chance in a Grand Slam, and they play in 20mph winds. That's Tennis.

As for the thread about moving indoors, the USTA National Tennis Center has 12 indoor courts to accommodate play. I do not think they'll do that unless they have a complete rainout the next two days. However, what do you think is the moral thing here?

Playing indoors is very different and personally I've never heard of a GS doing that...

A GS *QUALIFYING* tournament. Indoor tournaments count toward rankings and that is the primary determinant for the GS draws and 3 or the 4 slam seedings.

I don't suggest that the actual open be moved indoors (except possibly the semis and finals.

They got no problem closing that roof over Centre Court if it starts raining. In fact they're just itching to do so.

Im waiting to see how Blake Strode does.

For those that are not aware he is the USTA US Open National playoff winner.

Harrison decided to play for the Wild Card in Boca Raton and lost in the finals to Smyczek.

Young is getting the Wild Card because he is much higher ranked and isn't having a bad summer at all on the Challenger Circuit and beating Dudi Sela 5,0.

Harrison made a mistake by not entering in the Kalamazoo. Really stupid decision to try to get in through the Boca Raton Playoff, rather then the Junior Kalamazoo. Don't know what his thinking was there.

Jenkins and Ouanna, that should be an interesting match.

Harrison is too BIG for Juniors and didn't he turn pro ???????? so he can't play the Kzoo event.

^ He was eligible.

Cox turned pro and he played. Just a really stupid move by the Harrison camp.. Will be even more stupider if he doesn't make it through.
Harrison beats Sock in straight sets (3 out of 5 sets) any day

I know. thats what happens when your Head becomes too big for your own good......:)

Didn't Harrison turn down the Delray WC because he wanted to earn his entry through qualies, which he indeed did? Pretty cool and bold move by the Kid, if I'm remembering this correctly.

^ Harrison is a lot different than Donald. And I really hope it pays off and rewards him. He is taking the bold and difficult road to the Promise Land and it worked for Delray but I'm not sure about the USO.

Anyway, Jenkins and Ouanna, after 2 days, 2-1 onserve. And they were last match on both days. They must be the biggest victims out of this whole delay.

Actually, at the end of the day, even if Harrison *doesn't* make it through qualies, it still may have been the right decision in the long term.

Remember, he's still very young. At the moment, the most important thing to him is to keep improving and to work on his game. And the question is - what will help his game more? Getting in to the USO without fighting for it, or playing a few matches to do it?

It's questionable. I can understand the feeling - IF he's good enough to play in the US Open, then he should be able to beat his way through qualies. And if he's NOT good enough to play the US Open, then the qualies will be a fine enough learning experience, if he comes up against better players.

Not saying that's true. Maybe the reverse is true - getting to play against a player who far outclasses him might help him out. But do any of us really think that, say, Donald Young improved that much from getting wildcards way too early and losing 0 and 0 to journeymen he shouldn't have been facing yet?
