US Open scheduling

Can someone explain the logic behind the scheduling of matches at the US Open. Today, for example, there are some men playing their 2nd round matches whereas some women are already through to the 4th round. Earlier, there were men playing their first matches on Wednesday, while some women were already into the 3rd. AFAIK, this happens at no other major. It seems idiotic. Is there a valid reason for it?

The women need to get ahead since their final is a day before the men's. At W it starts after the R16.

And the French also chose to make the 1st round last 3 days and not go with the 'each half plays every other day' model. I'm not a fan of this - but not a big deal.

Looking at scheduling for tomorrow (Saturday) : Kvitova, Murray, Isner/Kohlschreiber and Wawrinka all relegated to Armstrong stadium, so Flavia Pannetta, Eugenie Bouchard, and Krygios/Robredo can play on center court at Ashe.

What is the logic behind this??

Kvitova - Panetta/Gibbs is scheduled because American into 3R

Only 1 men match during the day - so has to be Novak

Stan / Kavcic will be one sided whereas Kyrgios vs Robredo will go into 4 or 5 sets.

Murray has to be played parallel with Novak.

Well, the mens draw is crazy unbalanced this year. Lots of quality players on this side of the draw, and only few show courts available... What can you do

USO is the worst among the GS in terms of scheduling.

I feel sorry for the people who bought Night tickets for Saturday night and get stuck with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) vs. Eugenie Bouchard (CAN)
and Nick Kyrgios (AUS) vs. Tommy Robredo (ESP).

I truly believe that Isner vs Philipp Kohlschreiber or Djokovic vs Querrey should have been the night match.

Especially isner vs kohlschreiber, they always have amazing 3 or 5 set matches ( Us open 12 and Us open 13 )

You guys are whining without a reason.

There would be more crowd for Nicole Gibbs than Kvitova. It may be hard you to believe , but that is America and Americans.

Long weekend - they have to play the top seeds during the day. Day tickets are sold much more.

They cannot play Novak in the morning and Andy in the evening or vice versa.

The schedulers know the pulse of the crowd.

Chicken, egg? Day tickets get sold more because better matches to be seen.

'Pulse of the crowd, my eye. Real issue here is - as usual - tv coverage. Networks want big matches for the weekend to be aired during the day. They want ability to constantly shift from one 'big' match to another.

Pulse of the crowd includes TV.

CBS shells out heck of a lot of money for the day coverage and Tennis channel pays pittance for evening. CBS has coverage during day.

Would CBS accept seeing Robredo match ?

The women play their final before the men in every major, so that can't be the reason for the unusual US scheduling.

I hadn't noticed that the same thing happens at the French.

If everything goes smoothly, it may not actually be a big deal, but if the weather causes delays, the compressed schedule (of the men's portion) toward the end of the tournament may influence the outcome.

The French Open does the schedule best:
First round matches for men and women on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

Second round matches for men and women on Wednesday and Thursday

Third round matches for men and women on Friday and Saturday

Half of the men's and women's fourth round matches on Sunday, and the other half of men's and women's fourth round matches on Monday

Half of the men's and women's quarter final matches on Tuesday, and the other half of the men's and women's quarter final matches on Wednesday

Women's semi finals on Thursday. Men's semi finals on Friday

Women's final on Saturday. Men's final on Sunday.

I prefer this schedule to the Wimbledon one where they don't play on the Middle Sunday and have just the women's quarter finals on the second Tuesday and just the men's quarter finals on the second Wednesday. I also prefer it to the Australian Open one where they gave one men's semi final winner an extra day off before the final. As for the US Open schedule, it's been pretty terrible over the years, particularly 2008 and the years immediately following that.

Whichever of tsonga/Murray vs djokovic in quarters is a guaranteed night match on Wednesday. Murray/Tsonga possibly too. Therefore the round of 32 has to have both Murray and djokovic play in day for equality purposes.

Slightly hopeful on the Murray/djoker Wednesday night as i have a ticket for that session. I won't be best pleased if i end up with some kuznetsov/isner

Novak-Murray or Novak-Tsonga will likely be night session only.

Starting Tuesday, they line up important matches for night session.

I am not sure that FO scheduling is better than Wimbledon.

Looking at the schedule you described above:

Some women and men have longer rest between QFs and SFs i.e. some women play Tu-Th and some play next day after QF on Wed.

For men it is Tuesday-Friday against Wednesday-Friday.

Surely Wimbledon alternate days schedule is fairer to all players (weather permitting) with both men and Women having one rest day before SFs?

Reality is that apart from Wimby purely women days would not sell nearly as well both in tickets and TV revenue, so mix days are used to hide this fact.

aussie open best schedule

it's ironic slightly that a major that was slated for years as below-par...has had by far the best scheduling and common sense for the last 20+ years.
Melbourne of course.....assuming good weather (but they have 2roofs anyway)(foresight anyone....)
no second rounds begun until all first rounds completed = first 2 days
no third rounds begun until all second rounds completed = next two days...
etc
assuming good weather..naturally all m and w semi-finalists found by second wednesday night....AND STILL 4 DAYS TO PLAY WITH..if rain did interrupt...they then play both women's semi's on thursday and play the second men's semi opn friday to give a natural "break"....and by this time only 1 or 2 importnat games left so rain can't interrupt the schedule because of the roof.

french needs lights..
wimbledon's insistence on middle sunday rest day is going to get them in big problems soon......just like the us open's rubbish super saturday was always a car crash waiting to happen.(.it happened 2008-2012).

give the US Open schedulers abreak...at least they were common sense enough to scrap SS..Well DONE ...

Follow the smell of money and you will find logic.
