This would've happened in the 2nd set if LAF went up 5-4 tbh, but Fernandez was the one with the bad game there. Really it was a set late, but you could see it coming.

nice story i guess but can she win it ?? this girl has done nothing so far in her career,,,, could be flash in the pan... That's what i am afraid of........:confused:
That is always true of teen phenoms. Truth is we have to wait and see how it unfolds for them. Remember when Sloane Stephens won a Grand Slam a few years ago? She hasn't been near a win since then. It's the way it goes. Haven't there been 10 different women who have won over the past few years? This tournament will make it 11...

Almost forgot there’s another possible epic after this. What a night
One hell of a run.

R1: Konjuh
R2: Kanepi
R3: #3 Osaka
R4: #16 Kerber
QF: #5 Svitolina
SF: #2 Sabalenka

Konjuh - former top 20
Kanepi - former 2x USO QFist
Osaka - defending champ and 4x slam champ
Kerber - former champ and 3x slam champ
Svitolina - top 5
Sabalenka - #2 in the world
No weak era for her.

I hope Fernandez wins the entire thing.
She deserves it. People go by pretty faces, and that's why I think they will pull for Emma.

But Lelyeh has more substance.I loved her game. And now in the interview I am loving her personality.
True, but leylah is lovely as well and the personality enhances that.

Fernandez's fairytale continues. I never thought Sabalenka was going to win this because she doesn't handle pressure well and is an all or nothing type of player, going for too much. It looks like the WTA has a new star in Fernandez.
I agree. Sabalenka went for far too much on important points. She needed to just keep the point going rather than going for big winners.

It will be a flash in the pan. It always is.
People ask why I was cheering for Sabalenka, it's comments like these.

Fernandez coming out of nowhere and winning a slam is on brand for the WTA and then not backing it up. I hope she becomes an ATG and wins more but who knows. This feels Ostapenko-esque.

Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka......all vanquished back-to-back-to-back-to-back.....that is something, taking out the #3, #5, and #2. Still a long way to go - and Saturday will be a huge test.

lefty slice, inner fight, perched on the baseline hitting super early.....i dont think this is fluke,
at least I really hope its not.

Sabalenka played a good match and fought back in that third set, but completely choked that last game.

I thought Fernandez looked tired near the end, but she hung in there and got the win.

Yeah, on the other hand, I always associated that horrible term of "choking" to apply when you're in the lead, and nervously lose anyway. Here she lost her nerve while we were on serve. Anyway, sad way to end it for Aryna, hope she gets her slam soon.

Yes, I do, and I do remember that Sloane was leading by a set and a break against Halep in Roland Garros 2018 F.
So she did make it to another final. I think I missed that final for some reason or another.

Sabalenka is just not good enough. I wouldn’t mind her winning the title, but she’s just not good enough.

The magic carpet ride for LAF. Crazy to see a 19 year old be more poised under pressure than the world #2.

Epic collapse in that 4-5 game by Sabelenka. Hard to watch. She's looking like Dinara Safina 2.0.

LAF can play. She seems composed so I think she will only get stronger and be better. Don't see it as a flash in the pan.

ATP is a joke anyways.

Not sure Raducanu or Sakkari count as an epic. Had it been Barty or Serena it would've been the icing on the cake. An all teen final is cool but.
Idk Raducanu is in some scintillating form right now and Sakkari is also a baseliner. Going to be some long rallies and fun points. In a way I’m glad it’s not an established #1 like Barty, it keeps that magic feeling alive.

Why do I not remember Dinara Safina? Y'all keep mentioning her and I have no memory of her!

Halep x2
Kerber
Osaka x 4
Barty x 2
Amdreescu
Kenin
Swiatek

Hoping Raducanu wins her SF. Teenagers finals.

Sakkari should have won the FO this year, if not for messing up badly in the SF.

Absurd run. She’s so poised too, easy to see why the crowd loves her so much. The all-teen final would be pretty fun – just a feel-good story all around.

It's both. It's a fluke, but Fernandez is still a very good player. Those aren't mutually exclusive concepts.

To win these tournaments, you need to be a good player and you need to have some level of luck. But players who play like Fernandez give themselves a lot of opportunity for luck. Listen, if Caroline Wozniacki can make it to number one and stay there for weeks... Fernandez can win the US Open.

Who is calling this on ESPN3 ?

I think it's Jill Craybas and Ted Robinson, but I could be wrong. All I know is that they are better than Fowler and Evert.

Great win by LAF!

I'm really looking foward to the next match, which is kind of a toss up in my mind. Sakkari won the highest quality women's match I've seen at the Open this year when she took out Andreescu, so I think she wins it. But I would also be happy if Raducanu won and set up a match between the teens.

I just don't know and it's hard to predict but we've seen this before time and time again so i'm not ready to declare anything of her.

LAF can be a top ten player for a decade. Tons of room for improvement. But three mind and attitude is there. She could easily win a few slams. But yeah she won't dominate three tour.

And in men, just 4 guys won Grand Slams. WTA looks healthier in that sense.

Sabalenka hasn't won a slam either and is relatively unlikely to do so tbh. After watching what we just did I doubt she ever does it. I don't see why cheering for the younger player with much more promise is surprising.

They should just give Leylah the WTA #1 ranking at the end of the week if only they could. She is so far beyond anyone else playing in the WTA right now.

Huh? "So far beyond"? Sabalenka isn't even the best player in the WTA and took Fernandez to the limit while hitting 8 double faults. Fernandez just squeaked by Osaka and Svitolina so didn't look "so far beyond" them either. Fernandez is great, but she doesn't put everyone else to shame. Let's see how she does in the final.

She just turned 19 and with the improved power as she matures will be there. No injury issues either that I have heard of.

The mind is there and her serve will only improve making her less acceptable to flashes.
