That was a boring match. Totally expected too. Nadal never seemed like he even really got into it.

I don't understand how people can say that Nadal plays attractive tennis. Today has been a moonball fest. Do you guys seriously enjoy watching this over first strike tennis players like Sampras, Safin and Federer?

I've seen them all play live. Rafa, Marat, and Roger are all thrilling.

Pete was dull.

I'm also going to guess you don't exactly have the attention span for claycourt tennis. You might want to remember that Roger at one point took pride in being the #2 claycourt player in the world - in an era that included Fernando Gonzalez and Juan Carlos Ferrero. Sometimes it's not about good and bad -- some things are just a matter of taste. Have a drink. Relax.

Nadal and Novak will be battling for YE#1 on Monday

With ND's win today, Nadal can't pass Novak - even if he wins the USO

If Novak beats Rafa Monday:

NJ: 11,780
RN: 10,060

If Rafa beats Novak Monday:

NJ: 10,980
RN: 10,860

So even if Novak wins Rafa will still likely overtake him by years end as he is defending 0 points and Novak is defending 3,010. If Novak wins Beijing, both remaining masters and has a perfect record at London then he'll amass 4,000 points, ending the season on 12,770. That would give Nadal a total of 2,710 to chase for the rest of the year.

Long story short, if Novak doesn't play perfect tennis between now and December he'll be #2 in the world come 2014.

Who would have thought they'd turn into something of a U.S. Open rivalry?

Yeah. Nadal was supposed to "suck" here, back in the day. Their previous US Open finals were enthralling, each winning one. I wonder what the result will be this time? I hope Rafa does it :)

But, that is what ****** has been dishing out all his life, no?

Doesn't matter, he'd prefer slightly flatter and less loopy balls with more pace. That's what he's been conditioning himself for in order to win the title, so Gasquet's game was a little bit of an inconvenience to him and the general rally pace in the match ended up being a bit tame, and Nadal looked a bit lame.

2hrs 20mins I think..

richey lasted longer than expected, shame he didn't win the 2nd set tb but the mental midget was bound to lose it anyway..

A Nadal USO victory would pretty much seal the deal on YE#1, regardless of how Novak plays his remaining 4 tournaments.

The Spanos are happy now . . . but Drakovik awaits!

He's been terrible today. I don't know how the mods see past his crap. My brethren got deleted because supposedly, maybe some of the posts led to suspicion that they were accusing somebody of doping, which in fact, they didn't.

I didn't trust the concept of the Brethren thread, knew it would come to a bad end, and stayed the he11 outta of it. I knew I wouldn't like it, and wasn't going to wade into it. I am not foolish enough to fight any battle.

My take is posts that's say for fans of X, will end up badly, no matter who X is.

Nadal asked in postgame on court interview what he plans to do on day before the final, "I will be laundering my towels." he says.

hahahahahahahahahahahahha

Bad luck, Richard. Happy to see him do well this fortnight though. Hopefully this is the start of something much more on par with the talent he has. Love everything about him.

Rafa didn't play all that well. He needs to up level for the final.

No way! It's why I've always struggled to imagine Nadal as the greatest player ever, even if his achievements will likely support it soon. When I think GREAT players, I think of Federer, Sampras, Laver: artists on the court. Nadal is a grinder. He's a very GOOD grinder, but a grinder.

No, he's not.

He's for that matter a much more complete player than Sampras. An artist on the court?, if you like serve fests...

LOL, something funny I noticed while I was looking at the match stats: Gasquet had 1 forehand winner and that was on an approach shot.

His forehand is a horrible piece of work.

He used to be willing to crush flat forehand winners sometimes against Nadal, wonder what happened.

LOL

Gasquet by walkover. Nadal will win this match so quickly that he'll corrupt the laws of time and space, travelling forwards in time and missing the US Open semi final altogether.

If only, if only. You did mean miss the USO final

I remember Rafa had only lost his serve twice coming into the 2010 final. Even more impressive this year.

If he plays like this tomorrow he's got no chance. :| He'll probably try to raise his level but I'm not sure it will be enough. At some point in the second set there some long rallies, Gasquet was running 2 meters behind the baseline and Rafa was unable to hit a winner. His serve, return of serve and backhand also looked bad.

Yesterday was windy..

Anyway you can be sure Nadal will raise his level.

What's good is, even when playing average against Gasquet he didn't drop one single set, so .......

Congrats to Nadal! Gasquet was soooo tight int he first game, serving 40-15 only to lose it. I like though that he tried a few diff. tactics.
