The USTA announced today that a group of Americans consisting of Devin Britton (Jackson, Miss.), Chase Buchanan (New Albany, Ohio), Dent (Newport Beach, Calif.), Brendan Evans (Key Biscayne, Fla.), Jesse Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Rajeev Ram (Carmel, Ind.), along with two international players including Australian Chris Guccione and a player to be named by the French Tennis Association, have been awarded men’s singles main draw wild card entries into the US Open Tennis Championships.

Former junior No. 1 Donald Young, who played James Blake at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the 2008 US Open, was not awarded a wild card into the main draw or qualifying.

guess Baghdatis has to qualify...

Strange that they would even mention a wild card for qualifying - his ranking is high enough to get into that draw.

Dent and Ram....

Complete waste of wild cards.

Yes, why exactly these are a "waste of wild cards"? Dent was nearly top 20 before his horrible run of injuries, and Ram has an ATP title this summer.

I can't figure out why Devon Britton and Chase Buchanon got wild cards but not Ryan Harrison. Harrison is ranked way higher and is younger.

Buchanan won kalamazoo which I think entitles him to an automatic wildcard berth regardless of rank. and didn't britton win the NCAA singles title?

Chase gets an automatic bid because he won Zoo in Mich. And Britton got one because he won NCAA tittle (youngest ever) and he was also a finalist at the junior US Open last year. The winner of the NCAA tourney used to get automatic bids into the draw as well.

yay

Yay! Guccione, Isner, and Karlovic will all be in the draw!

I hope none of them face Tsonga though, I bet any of them would beat him... but I like Tsonga.

Can someone explain to me the significance of a wild card? Im confused to be honest...

S.S.

It means that even though you're not ranked high enough to make the US Open directly, you're given the privilege of being included in the US Open draw without having to qualify for it.

If anyone's interested, Christina McHale from New Jersey won the Girls National 18s out here in Berkeley last Sunday, so she gets a wild card into the Open.
She won the singles and the doubles.

susrprised that someone crappy like bogomlov didnt get one.

the usta have made a former number 1 and grand slam champion in ferrero qualify all summer and have given wildcards to alex bogomolov and jesse levine, the both of them wont sell 2 tickets combined

Fererro only had to qualify once, and that was b/c he missed the entry deadline for Montreal...no need to hate on the USTA

no matter where the tourney is, there will always be that nations citizens who get the vast majority of the tourneyes wildcards.

I think as everyone that this is a waste of wildcards ....why dont they give them to rookies that never dreamt of participating in the first rounds of a Grand Slam...perhaps there could be some surprises as rookies getting to quarterfinals....perhaps there are hidden Federers down there...who knows?...

Chase got it because he won Kalamazoo. It is automatic. Devon did well in a Vancouver qualifier to get his.

Jesse Levine isn't going to make it IMO. He too small (5'7"?) with a grinders game, no weapons, no putaway shots, weak serve. Buchanan isn't going to make it either- no weapons, no powers, weak serve, just makes balls which wins in juniors..

Britton hit a wall in the 2nd set at Pilot Pen qualies. During a rallye, he did a ball from the deep deuce corners then I didn't see him hit the next ball. I look back and he's sitting in the lineman's chair, wtf?

Maybe I'm biased because I've seen Chase Buchanan play at a futures event and he was a total spoiled pr*ck, but why on earth would the USTA give a wildcard to a No. 6 guy on a college team.

Well, I know why - he was part of the USTA development program, so in that context it makes sense. But, in terms of giving chances to promising talent that may emerge as future stars, it makes no sense. Obviously, he's a good player, but I don't see a big ATP future for him.

Edit: I read the rest of the responses and realized that Buchanan won the 18s at Kalamzoo, which guarantees a wildcard for the winner. My mistake.

David Britton is good choice, plus he has a aggressive serve and volleying style that would be interesting to see how it fairs out. They should have thrown a bone to Donald Young, maybe he would finnaly stary winning some matches.

How come Donald Young didn't get a WC into the main draw - isn't he the best of the young Americans?

because ferrero is a former number 1 and roland garros winner and more than 1 man and his dog would actually like to watch him.

alex bogomolov i wouldnt go for free to watch him play.

Actually, Britton has yet to win a MD match, at any level, since turning pro. HE got his WC for winning the NCAAs. He does have a couple of wins at the Futures level from before he turned pro.

Errrr. Come again? DY has been consistently losing in Challengers and even Futures this year. They have already wasted many wildcards for him. He does NOT deserve one.

I'm only asking mate - I'm from the UK and I thought DY was the up and coming American. We (the LTA) have given our number 2/3 umpteen consecutive WCs for Wimbledon - I thought Young was still young (no pun intended) and would still get one from the USTA.

Ohh OK. Sorry for jumping the gun there.

You're right, Young was billed to be the Next Great Thing in America and after a pretty good junior career he hasn't been able have success in the big leagues. He's already been given plenty of wild cards into plenty of tournaments.

he's in the qualies ,actually won a match ..
