The swings in quality are not unusual for a WTA match (not even one with Serena, provided her opponent is actually decent enough to take advantage of her dips in form). But Serena does tone down the overt displays of emotion when she's playing Big Sis. Why does she do that? Maybe she feels a bit silly getting hysterical when her sister on the other side of the net.

Venus, of course, is always stoic. Combined, the two of them make the match feel a bit unreal, even when it's perfectly legit and hard fought.

Venus is 35 years old. Of course her level is going to be up and down. Do you guys remember when Agassi lost the first set 6-3 then won the 2nd set 6-2 against Federer in the '05 US Open final? Then he lost a tight set in a tiebreak, then lost the 4th 6-1.

It happens when you reach that age but you're still so talented.

It use to be that women's matches were fun to watch because of the long rallies. Ever since Clijster and Henin left tennis the women matches stink. Halep and Lisicki match was a horrible match. Halep the number 2 player is a joke. Serena will probably win the third set 6-0 and the announcers will proclaim it as the greatest comeback ever. If Serena wins the slam, is it because she is a great tennis play or that the competition is below par. After seeing matches like Novak - Agut, Anderson - Murray, Fognin-Nadal, Cilic - Tsonga, does anybody really think the women should get paid the same as the men????
Make them play 5 set matches and they can get paid the same, that is how I see it. I don't care if they physically can't last that long. Train more, retire, or don't enter the Grand Slams at all. Or maybe give them a 20 minute break in between the 3rd and 4th set. I don't care really.

The only downside to this plan is that the women's matches would take longer and it keeps me away from the more interesting men's matches.;) OTOH if the women played 5 set matches, it might actually make the WTA quite interesting as well.

Venus kinda blew it for herself that game. Bad misses.
Agreed. She is trying to force the issue and to shorten the points. I understand that she can't hang with Serverena from the baseline, but should try something different sometimes.

I know many of you will disagree, but the first 2 sets were scripted in my view. The sisters probably said "Hey let's split the first two with double breaks so we don't waste energy, then play for real in the third, so we can give the crowd a third dramatic set to cheer about!"

Honestly, before the match I said to myself, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they split the first two sets in lopsided fashion, then Serena who is clearly the stronger player will impose her will when they play for real in the third.

LOL, wow, I suppose this idea of thinking gets thrown around a lot when it comes to their matches, LMAO...

I like how this thread got a huge ammount of attention for a WTA match even tho everyone (and i do mean EVERYONE) knew what would happen.

Still, Serena marches on and i fully hope she completes it and confirms her crown as the GOAT
