US Open you are now the worst Slam OFFICALLY!

Arthur Ashe is a disgrace. I cannot even watch the matches. It sounds like I am watching the opera instead of a tennis match. The noise and echo from the roof is unbearable. Who's brilliant idea was it to put a roof over THIS stadium that already has so many issues? Why not build a brand new stadium? They just threw money down the drain.

Same buzz at Wimbledon w the roof closed.

Just hit Mute. The announcers are mostly spouting drivel; you won't miss anything.

The problem is the mics around the court to pick up the sound of the shots (and any outbursts by the player - another JMac legacy).

Someone's buying the tickets for the seats in the upper level. If they're enjoying the show from up there, I'm happy for them and the USTA.

Agree. They COMPLETELY ruined the court in 2015 when they started building that roof. Now this is a nightmare court for Nadal.

It was very loud when the stadium erupted when Francis won the fourth set. And again when Fed held easily after that.

I don't hear any noise on Eurosport. I think the TV provider has the option to mute the background noise. Yesterday, the reporter said the cheers when Rafa entered the court was the loudest she'd ever heard and I didn't hear anything, but I heard the one for Fed so they muted it when Rafa walked on because the commies were too busy listening to their own voice.

Rafa agreed with you in his PM presser.

Haha, how about no? Roland Garros is clearly the worst slam, it's 2017 and still no lights.

Wasn't there an issue a year or two ago where a piece of metal from the stands fell and hit someone too?

Roland Garros is the best slam because it is natural.

Natural surface. Natural setting (no roof). Natural light (sun). It's what tennis should be about, a celebration of humans and our beautiful planet (sunshine, wind, sky, rain, earthy surface, etc).

P.S: A request to everyone in advance: please leave innocent Nadal out of this, it has nothing to do with him... thank you.

Rafa's presser:

Q. It was very noisy under the roof. Does it disturb you? You have to adapt your game to the noise?

RAFAEL NADAL: Being honest, is a little bit too much (smiling). You know, I don't know how to control that or the umpire have to control that, because, yeah, at the same time is not fair only say that. The real thing is here, the energy and support of the crowd is massive. I enjoy it and I have unforgettable memories from this tournament and this court, because the energy is different from in other places.

But at the same time is true that today, under the roof, was too much (smiling). Too much noise, no? I was not able to hear the ball when you are hitting, no?

So I don't know. I understand it's a show, at the end of the day, and I enjoy that. I feel part of this, of course, but under the roof, you know, we need to be a little bit more strict about the noise, in my opinion, no? Because all the noise stays inside, and this is difficult, no? With the roof open, feeling change a lot.

Sensible comments from Nadal. A balance must be found between the traditional raucous, NY atmosphere of the USO and the potentially oppressive acoustics created by the new closed environment.

Sorry, but OP is right. I was there yesterday (I love the Open). Everyone is talking during the points in the upper levels since they're so far away. Naturally, the upper levels are closest to roof which bounces back the din. The noise and the fluorescent lighting makes it seem like you're watching a tennis match in the atrium of an Embassy Suites.

Surprised to hear this from someone who I assume is a Fed fan

I'm curious why a Fed fan wouldn't hate the USO? I'm an American and a Fed fan and I have always hated the venue, the obnoxious fans and the scheduling. The USO used to be by far the second most prestigious slam, but it's definitely dropped below the AO and probably the FO as well. It used to be the planes flying overhead every .07 seconds and now it's this hideous roof and the resulting acoustical hell.

The stadium is a giant monstrosity that needs to be torn down

Last year, Rafa became the first player to win a match under the closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium:

building a new stadium???
it will cause more money and there is no space unless USTA wants to move other cities for the tournament and I don't think it will ever happen.
probably they tried to save money to not hiring acoustic sound engineer firm which is super expensive to only diagnose or they did not even think of noise problems.
it's already finished so they need to put more money to improve noise problems..... it's not impossible but more money.

They should have left the roof off. It used to be a cool stadium and look awesome from inside and out. It looks weird wth the roof on it now.

Roland Garros is still the official worst slam. There is no debate. At least the USO has somewhere to play when it rains and oh yeah, actual lights to play under.

With regular mention of "non-clay" tennis on the boards, which is stupid and just a way to diminish Nadal's accomplishments (even though he's won at least 2 slams on each surface), how about we turn the tables and talk about "non-hardcourt" tennis?

Clay & grass are the natural surfaces in tennis. These surfaces are what our planet earth is all about. They compliment the human body and are much less prone to injury. They are natural and earthy. They are not some artificial man-made ridiculous surface.

In the open era, the leaders in "non-hardcourt" slams are:

1) 11 slams
Nadal: 9 clay, 2 grass
Borg: 6 clay, 5 grass

3) 8 slams
Federer: 7 grass, 1 clay

4) 7 slams
Sampras: 7 grass, 0 clay

5) 5 slams
Laver: 4 grass, 1 clay (11 slams if pre-open era included)
Connors: 4 grass, 1 clay
Newcombe: 5 grass, 0 clay (7 slams if pre-open era included)
Wilander: 3 clay, 2 grass

9) 4 slams
Djokovic: 3 grass, 1 clay

natural bull sh**

lol RG is the best slam. you don't need a roof or lights. wimbledon had neither until 2009 so was it terrible? should we vacate fedders slams since it sucked prior to 2009? lol.

also USO was better before the awful roof they have.

They need to put some sound absorbing foam on top or something. It's extremely annoying how loud stuff is I don't care who you are a fan of.
Exactly what I was thinking. Good ol' U.S. the self-proclaimed king of technology but has acoustic issues at a large venue. So sad. Gotta change this. I haven't been there since 2005 and 06.
