Wonder if Puget will get the call in singles today - that'd make it real interesting if he were put in at 5 with Sell at 6.

^^^ putting Puget in ? he's not match shape J.Di Giulio has been doing good.

I really can't see USC winning this one..if this would be the lineup ..

it wouldn't surprise me if UCLA goes 4-0..

According to what they have down Sarmiento and Hanfmann are playing at 1 & 2 dubs. I'm sure they'll correct them.

does this match really matter in lite of NCAA seedings ? of course, you are playing for the most prestigious traditional win that is Ojai, there is that. but more importantly these two teams will be tournament Tough when NCAA starts.
As Williams sisters saids, "You play and practice against the best, you can't help it but be ready for the toughest tournaments "

Yes - seeding/ranking is at stake. UCLA will probably end up around 3 with a win and 6 with a loss. USC would be 1 or 2 with a win and 4 with a loss.

Does Giron matchup better against Hanfmann or does Thompson matchup better against hanfmann. Hanfmann seem to like playing Thompson better

Trojans top 2 stepping it up today. But need a rally from 2. Looks like Johnson starting one and Quiroz with the rumblings of one. This one will go down to the wire

Looks like Smith doesn't trust wang after losses against ohio state and baylor. Both farren and grant are ahead of him in the lineup despite wangs ranking of 54

Smith should have countered with Wang

why is Wang in and out of lineup ? is he not good enough to be permanent staple in the lineup ?

Smith lost his chance to use Wang's high ranking to play him higher in the line up like 2,3 or 4 and move everyone down to stabilize the bottom .. if Wang is so undependable ,just think of throwing that point away and strengthen the 4,5,6 ..
I don't know,it's easy to speculate after the lost .. but Smith should have done this thru out the whole season and it would have been legit because of Wang's high ranking..
UCLA did it last Clay in the past and Novikov .. Virginia did it Frank last year playing him at #3 ..

People last year said that we were setting up Mitchell Frank for easy wins at #3, but that means we were making it harder on the top 2. But Jenkins beat Novikov at #1 in straight sets in the final, while Frank needed the net violation to beat Puget at #3 (and was bageled in the first set). Not only was the lineup legit, but it is the exact opposite of the stacking recommendation you have for USC, in which you move a player several spots higher than he should be in order to help several other players. Or were you saying that Frank was too high at #3? :)

Citing an example that is the opposite of what you are talking about is pretty clever analysis.

I was talking about in this one match scenario, Wang's eclectic mixing it up game might have been more of a challenge to Puget(who is all court mixing it up player himself) in his first match back than the fairly straightforward Grant.

Lets say Smith did do that. Inserted Wang at 3

1. Hanfmann
2. Sarmiento
3. Wang
4. Quiroz
5. De Vroome
6. Johnson

Do you think that looks like a line-up more likely to win? Quiroz would be tough to beat at 4 and De Vroome a very good #5. Johnson at 6 is not much different than him at 5. Wang would lose a lot of matches at 3. It looks like a Ty Tucker line-up.

^^^ Ohio State is doing better than anyone expected them to this year... yeah C.Diaz doesn't win too many matches but the lower line up cleans up..

Interesting that no one has mentioned that the #1 & #3 ranked players in the nation were beaten fairly routinely. The key to the win comes down to UCLA not donating the doubles point like they did early in the season. Wang would not have made a difference...
