Interesting that no one has mentioned that the #1 & #3 ranked players in the nation were beaten fairly routinely. The key to the win comes down to UCLA not donating the doubles point like they did early in the season. Wang would not have made a difference...
I'd probably pick the more experienced junior over the freshman in that scenario...the doubles point was huge given the loses of both Giron and Thompson.
that was 2 excellent wins at 1&2 Ray came up big with that win over Clay, perfect time to get into things again...
So it'll be interesting to say the least, next time USC and UCLA meet... and it should be for the crown at the NCAA...
What does that matter? All courts count 1 point. Each as relevant as the other. I think the point me and SoCals10 are making is that the insertion of Puget at 6 and him outclassing Grant was a bigger factor than the doubles point was in this particular match.
Not saying that will be the case in the future. That's what makes these UCLA vs USC matches so great. Different keys and difference makers in each of the meetings.
I tell ya ,I'm a USC fan but I really enjoy seeing Billy Martin mix it up... to me he's been doing it better than Smith.. USC just got lucky those 4 years with Steve Johnson and DWin .. they were just big time in prime time. They came up big when the pressures was on... you can't coach that..

MY point is given the straight set losses of 2 of top ranked players in the country to players ranked several places below them created a scenario that made the doubles point more important than usual. Had UCLA not won the doubles point then Puget's win at 6 might have been just a nice side bar, a successful comeback from knee surgery. Yes UCLA could have won without the doubles point but having that point in their pocket made the quick losses of their 2 top players something less to panic over.
You think the doubles point didn't matter, I do--we'll leave it at that.
The crowd was indeed huge, amazing energy and atmosphere. I agree that the team playoff is an improvement over the old individual tournament. The crowd was less than 1/2 as big for the Sunday events.
