Used rackets value loss

This might not go in this thread, I'm unsure. I'm not selling anything though, just a racket question.

How much value do rackets lose once opened? And how much if it's like 3 years old? I have 2 PD Roddicks that I'll probably want to sell, but they both are sorta scratched up, and one has a small crack in it. Do rackets become useless after such use, or what? I've never sold rackets before except to a friend as a favor

From a fairly extensive experience with racquet sales on this board, I'd say a racquet loses close to 40 percent of value the moment it's deemed used. Damage obviously incurs further loss of value, and a racquet that's "cracked" is like a car that leaks oil -- almost nobody would want to buy it.

Depends. Unused w/ plastic on handle could be retail. But no warranty. Strung up would OK if not hit with.

Once you play with it, it loses between 10-25% even if new. Not as bad as a new car off the lot, but getting there.

After that, you have to give its condition. 9/10 condition maybe should go for 60% and after that it drops really fast. 5/10 condition maybe should go for 20% retail. Cracked, don't even bother.

This does not apply to legitimate pro stock frames.

TW has a return policy that is very fair. I forget the details but I used it and was quite satisfied with what they allowed me.

In general, the value of a used racquet depends largely on two things, the make/model and the condition. A Babolat APD or PD will retain a lot more value than some less popular brand. There is next to no resell market for the vast majority of racquets.

People avoid used racquets for several reasons. One, they could be damaged. Two, it can be difficult or expensive to get replacement grommets. Three, they could be counterfeit. Probalby most important, people want the latest and they aren't all that expensive brand new.

Yeah, both are garbage, I'll take the non cracked one off your hands for $15, trust me!

The actual real answer is, yes, the cracked one is worth nothing, and the other one still fetches a decent price on the "bay".

The key to knowing a racquets value is the popularity and the availability of the stick. For instance, PD Roddick is going away, they no longer use the Roddick name..therefore value just went up.

BTW...don't listen to the folks who believe the "wear out" hype...unless a Pro owned it who strung every few days, there is plenty of life in most used sticks, and only the top players may notice the difference. I'm 4.0 leaning toward 4.5 and I have solid 5.0 buddy, we both do a fair share of winning more than we lose, and neither of us is using any light, stiff, crap made in the past 5 years! I haven't paid for a new stick in years...biggest hype scam in sports is the "wearing out" of a tennis racquet. I beat dudes with new sticks all the time..it's a blast!

Ok thanks guys, this has been helpful! I guess I'll just hold on to them and and maybe someday I'll just find someone that wants them for a decent price

I think this is a good answer.

I learned a long time ago to manage my expectations when selling used racquets. Unless you've got something that is a) pro stock or b) rare and desired, you probably won't get more than 60% of retail.

Please don't list a racquet that is cracked.

Your best bet is to go to e-bay and check the sold items. Not just the completed auctions, but the ones that actually sold. As others have said, a racquet with a crack is pretty much worthless.
