The one SFist outlier wears a decent design from Yonex but I like their black/white combo instead of the wine/white combo. The women’s kit worn by Garcia is nice!
Yonex's stuff looks top notch. Is that normal with them? I feel like racquet companies have always had a second rate reputation when it comes to clothing compared to Nike/Adidas/Asics etc. but I don't know if that's necessarily true.

I can't imagine him losing to anyone left in the draw after that win.

On paper, no. But, I can see circumstances where he might lose. Though he's the guy I'd bet on.

I just don't think he's THAT far ahead of the remaining players to be immune to losing due to (1) a very good performance by his opponent, and (2) a slightly off performance from himself.

Agree, this US Open is far from over

both of these kids have their heads screwed on straight. I’m really looking forward to many more of these.

as good as Sampras-Agassi was, we were robbed of several peak years because of Agassi’s demons.

can’t believe these kids are 19 and 21. Many more years of scintillating tennis and pushing each other to heights unknown I hope.

It would be very rare for Alcaraz to be able to defeat Big Foe after two very long matches.
:cautious:
Why are people like this? Alcaraz can defeat Tiafoe! It's not a 100% certainty but he CAN DO IT! Just stop! Say what you mean: you don't want him to! Geez!

They've both had all their vaccines! Plus lots and lots of boosters! ;)

:-D Carlitos could come back out right now and go another five hours.
The Barcelona daily double was enough. PCB, despite playing less than half the amount of games in his SF, was basically a spectator in the final after AllThatJazz overcame MP vs AdM earlier the same day.

He's 2-0, 2-0 versus ruud and khach

0-1 versus tiaf. Match on clay a year and a half ago when he was 17 and ranked pretty low, relative to where he is now.

This was the toughest match in his draw, IMO and he could have won it in straight sets.

Biggest statistical difference: Sinner served 43 more points to reach deep into a fifth set. The war of attrition was won there because anyone that has ever played the sport knows how much more work the server is exposed to in those long deuce games.
Oh this is a really interesting insight thank you for sharing.

In many ways this one seems impossible to call for me. Forced to pick, I have Sinner in 4
One thing, I feel fairly certain about in this match: We'll see lots and lots of breaks.
Carlos has a much better 5th set record, 5-1 vs. 2-3 (probably pre-US Open stats). Does Sinner need to finish Carlos in 4??
How did we all do in the prediction game? I got the winner wrong by one point, but otherwise not too shabby. This match truly could have had any number of outcomes.

Can and will are two different things.
Alcaraz is not normal, it is obvious, but he is in the development phase and after two brutal matches, especially this last one, the player from Murcia will have to be very effective against the local player in the semifinals if he wants to have a good opportunity to pass the round.
:D

It seems to be better than Nadal's serve to me.
Rafa's serve is better than it looks, I think.
More miles on Alcaraz', but Rafa's lefty spin is more difficult to handle for the vast majority of opponents. He's also a better spot server and can create more angles due to his extra height and spin. I do hope (and expect) Carlos' serve to improve in the spot serving department though

I bought a few Yonex crew shirts during Wawrinka’s peak years. They were quite decent quality, moisture wicking being an important criterion bcoz I live in high humidity Central Florida and wear the shirts while working outdoors. I have no experience with Wilson, Head, Babolat, Dunlop apparel.

His return is certainly a weapon. That is a key foundation of the Djokovic principle.
He's got so many weapons it's a laughable claim. His movement, serve returns, FH, mental toughness, quickness/court coverage are all weapons.

What he does excellent: BH, volleys, dropshots, transitioning to net, TS lobs, creativity.

He's about to be the youngest ATP #1 by over a year at 19 years, 6 months.

To state he has no weapons and merely chases balls defending is ridiculous :D

Yes, I said CAN and not WILL! My point is that it is disingenuous for people to keep disparaging Carlos when what they really mean is that they want someone else to win!

He's the favorite to win it from here, sure. But
  1. two long 5-setters with him getting to bed at 5 am could actually affect him even though he looks like the energizer bunny
  2. Tiafoe is also much better than a year and a half ago and he will have the crowd support come Friday, something that Carlos' is not used to.
  3. Ruud is playing the best tennis of his life, at least on a HC. He went almost 2 sets vs. Berri with just 2 UE in total. Granted, Berri was poor, but Ruud was also just insanely good.
  4. In short, stranger things than Alcaraz not winning this tournament happens all the time

The return stood out to me in terms of its power.

Was it 18 breaks of serve in 54 service games??

33% of service games going to the returner??
17 breaks total. Sinner had 7, Alcaraz had 10. Most breaks were more of the earned type rather than conceded. Sinner started very shaky, a hangover from his Ivashka struggles but righted the ship and the DFs dwindled until his legs got heavy late in the fourth and then again in the fifth.

An absolute classic by sound of things , As i live in UK have taped and will definitely watch later.

I think both Alcaraz and Sinner look the real deal and definitely will be 2 of the brightest and biggest stars going forward and especially now that Rafa & Novak are nearing end of their careers at top of game

Yes, Carlos wins. Congrats to all his fans like @Lleytonstation

I watched the whole match lol.

One of the greatest matches of all time that was. I never am one for you played well but lost its all good though. Today was the exception. That match was the start of a new era of real ATG tennis. We have not seen that level of play since the peak days of the Big 3. Unreal.

I was getting frustrated @ Alcaraz always trying to go forehand to forehand with Sinner. His tactics hurt him. It reminded me of Freddy Vs Delpo in the 2009 US Open Final. Stubborn tactics ...

Plus Alcaraz has so much natural variety in his game, he should use it a little more often. But targeting Sinner's backhand should have been a no brainer ...

My stats are from Flashscore, a very reputable source. One of them is wrong by a break. Big whoopee! What is undisputedly correct is it was an instant classic with a victory well earned by Alcaraz and most probably the top match of the year.

To make you feel better. I think the commentator's got it wrong on my local broadcast when they kept mentioning Carlitos's 4 set points in the second. I remembered it as 5 lol. 0-40 + Advantage + 1 in the breaker. All on Sinner's serve.

Yes one of the best. Still can't understand why Alcaraz's second serve carried him through this match in the way that it did. His first serve was abysmal & came in for the match point lol . It cut Sinner in half, brutal way to end it :D

If he can get his first serve & turn it into a weapon + use tactics to win matches as opposed to just playing whatever points he wants to play, he'll become a force. He has an almost total game. I also love his wide stance serves, always fun to see guys try those!
