It would be a good match but I would say Nadal most likely.

Nadal was losing to a lot of guys in 2009 that he's beating this year, including Soderling (who he has been trouncing, and beat on hard courts). Nadal had a 3cm tear in his abs last year in the semi. He had DP beat at Miami and completely fell apart.

Federer kinda gave away that final too. DP played poorly for the first set and a half, but Federer was two points away from going up 2-0 in sets on serve. DP won just as much as Federer kinda crumbled last year. We will see what he does when he returns.

Easily Del Potro, assuming it's at the US Open. Del Potro's power game would have been devastating even to this year's Nadal.

Not at the US Open, Nadal. But this poll isn't very clear.

I don't think he could handle the pace DelPo had, even now.

I like delpo quite a bit. I think with the new nadal serve it will be 60/40 in favor of delpo on the Us open courts. Nadal is now obviously recognized as the best mind on the tour. Imo delpo is next, so it would be quite a match. :) I hope delpo makes it back to normal so we can see some good matches between these two guys on the hard courts and maybe even clay.

Good post.
I'm looking forward to these 2 to have some good matches in the future.

DelPo's game matches up well to Nadal's. He isn't troubled by Nadal's high bouncing shots on either wing & the pace on his shots don't allow Nadal the time to setup his forehand. Plus the fact that DelPo doesn't choke on big occasions unlike Soderling, Murray etc. is another huge factor.
So yes, I would go for DelPotro. In fact Nadal was extremely lucky that DelPo got injured and could not defend his USO title!

Federer vs DelPo is a different story, because Federer likes the pace (well at least he used to a couple of years back)

Yes so he had a 3 CM tear in his abs and made it to the semi-final of a slam. Totally believable. Now I'm not saying the tear couldn't have occurred during the semi, but if it occurred at any time before that semi, I find it hard to believe that considering Sampras suffered from a similar injury and got bageled by Agassi in the 5th.

Del Potro would score the win but a Nadal with a flatter serve would eek out at least a set. Most likely would've been a four or five set affair, definitely no straight set affair for Delpo though

That proves just 1 thing! Rafa > Pete. :p

Uhhh, there's more than one surface.

All you idiots honestly think DelPo would beat Nadal on grass and clay?

I lol at you.

nadal clearly played at a higher level in USO = barely dropped serve. dont know what all the del po fans are on about, but nadal was on god mode the entire tournament.

djoker clearly a bad matchup got brushed aside by the stronger rafa.

Nadal in 3 or 4 sets. People are overrated Del Potro, probably because he's been out all year, you tend to become a better player the longer you are injured (see Nalbandian). Nadal beat djoker in 4 sets who is a worst match-up for him and is a better player than Del Potro.

Nadal in 4, clearly.

If Djoko, the worst match-up on hard for Nadal (2-7 before the final), coudnt do anything, wtf could have do Delpo?

The debate is a joke. Delpo is overrated.

you know what, i cant wait for that Potro guy to come back and play Nadal again.

These are the same morons who claimed Nadal did not stand a chance against djokovic.

either fed or delpo in their usopen09 form would have won against rafa this year imo

delpos performance in the last 3 sets was some of the biggest and most consistent htting ive ever seen

Tough question. I would probably say DP given his performance, but Nadal was a beast this year, so I'm not really sure. If its before the final, I say DP, but if its in a final I say Nadal because he'll find a way to win.

reg djoker, he was a tougher matchup for rafa when he actually had a darn good serve, which is nowhere close to what it was now

It was 20-5 in favor of Del Potro but now it's 37-21.

Del Potro will be back soon, I think in Bankok, so Nadal has a chance for revenge. Nadal leads the H2H 4-3 losing the last 3.

Bangkok? who cares? Nadal will revenge in a major scenario, like everyone else who owned Nadal in the past: Federer (Wimbly'08, AusOpen'09), Murray (Wimbly'10), Djokovic (Olympic Games'08, USOpen'10), Soderling (FO'10, Wimbly'10)...

Now DelPo and Davydenko are under the Nadal radar.

Del Potro didn't just beat Nadal, he straight up man handled him and gave him probably the worse beatdown he has ever received in a slam.

Djokovic BTW has never beaten Nadal in a slam.

My first post on the forum, let me try and make it a good one.

My guess would most likely depend on whether Del Potro already has a US Open crown under his belt or not. When he played Federer last year, he had absolutely nothing to lose, and could go for broke pretty much every point. If he plays Nadal now, I'd expect Nadal to win in 4, even on hard courts. But boy will we see some shots. If Del Potro keeps playing without the pressure getting to him, it should be much tougher on Rafa, but given how strong Rafa is mentally, and how prepared he comes for the opponent of the day, I'd be foolish to bet against him. Rafa in 4 or maybe 5 sets.

Pointless thread. Nadal won in 2010, Potro was injured. Sure it sucks that Nadal had one of the easiest runs to a US Open final in a while but again all that matters is if you beat the 7 men who were put in front of you. He did that. Stop crying about it. You will never know if 2009 Potro could beat 2010 Nadal on the US open hardcourts and frankly even if he could it doesn't matter. What is done is done.

Good question. I think Juan Martin in 4 or 5 sets. Last year he showed great mental fortitude against Fed in the final after double faulting the 3rd set away. I had written him off and did he prove me wrong! He's one of the few players who can outslug Nadal from the baseline and his movement for someone his size (6 foot 6 inches) is impeccable and cannot be compared to Soderling who tends to lumber towards the ball. This is pure speculation of course so for all we know Nadal could be winning this in straights, but my prediction stands as it is. Good day.
