USO 2025 announces Mixed Doubles pairings featuring most of top 10 men/women

I don't get it.
Normally the best ranked doubles players in the world contest the mixed doubles. And normally the title actually means something.

This time, they didn’t allow the best doubles players to play. Instead they only took the best men’s singles players, who usually get crushed in doubles against the best doubles players.

In other words, they turned the tourney into an exhibition of popular players instead of an open competition of the best players.

This fake US Open mixed title will devalue the real mixed titles won by real doubles players in the past.

Exactly. Most of these teams won’t take this seriously.

Do players get to choose their doubles partners, or is it up to the tournament organizers based on certain criteria like popularity or hype?

The 2025 Australian Open Seeds, spot the difference....

[edit]
  1. Italy Sara Errani / Italy Andrea Vavassori (second round)
  2. New Zealand Erin Routliffe / New Zealand Michael Venus (semifinals)
  3. Australia Ellen Perez / Germany Kevin Krawietz (quarterfinals)
  4. United States Taylor Townsend / Monaco Hugo Nys (second round, withdrew)
  5. United States Desirae Krawczyk / United Kingdom Neal Skupski (first round)
  6. Chinese Taipei Hsieh Su-wei / Poland Jan Zieliński (second round)
  7. Netherlands Demi Schuurs / Germany Tim Pütz (second round)
  8. United States Asia Muhammad / Argentina Andrés Molteni (quarterfinals)

Taking away opportunities and money from the poor to give it to the rich. Sign of the times.

Ah, interesting they gave defending Errani/Vavassori a WC. They were rather vocal about how the new rules were unfair etc earlier this year. Sounded like they assumed they wouldn't be getting a WC(they are the only team without a highly ranked singles player). Would be funny to see them win.

also its being played over 2 nights with 4 game sets. And its being played before the tournament starts officially.

Wow, I can't believe the Alcaraz/Radacanu thing is actually happening :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Do actual doubles players get to take part too, or are they all kicked to the curb so these guys can make a few extra bucks?

Its only a 16 team field(being played over 2 nights). All 16 teams are listed in the OP. Only 3 dubs players listed - Townsend, Errani, Vavassori. And they are paying more(1 million as in contrast to the 200k that the normal mixed event plays, so yeah the dubs players are getting screwed. No Siniakova, Hsieh, Ram etc.

But it is rather early, who knows who will drop out cause they have a niggling injury etc.

This is all about money. There’s a $1 million dollar prize pot and clearly mixed doubles isn’t lucrative so the powers that be have come up with this as a money spinner.

“The 2025 edition of the US Open will be the first with a new format of mixed doubles competition, that will be moved to the first week of the US Open–Fan Week and played from Tuesday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 20 with a reward of $1 million winner’s prize.

The two days of competition will be held in the Arthur Ashe Stadium and the Louis Armstrong Stadium, featuring 16 teams, with eight teams earning direct entry based on their combined singles ranking and eight wild-card entries. The matches will be played in best-of-three-sets with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all, and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games, featuring no-ad scoring, with tiebreakers at six-all with a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.”

This change was very much criticized by players and fans

Just one of the slams trying to show us and the tour, with what and with which players they can get away with...

I won't watch mixed doubles apart this year, sadly I think their plan can work. The star power will pull in views.

Oh, the other slams are considering doing this for sure. And I'm sure USO will be charging for qualies in the future as well(so many people now go to it). 3 week slams = way more $$ than 2 week slams. A freaking cocktail(honey deuce) made 12 million for the USO last year.

They did a test run last year and learned that people will pay to watch an Exo during qualies week. Though I think that including some singles too.

The only thing they need to add is to mic the players. So you get the full hit and giggles experience.

They have an opportunity here to increase visibility of (mixed) doubles.

They can start with putting the big name singles players in (because let's be honest, they're the draw), build up interest, and then slowly integrate the actual doubles players back once the interest has been established.

But I doubt that's what they're thinking when they came up with this.

I saw this first on Reddit this morning. Some people were claiming it was fake news.

But it's true. And it will completely fulfill the USTA's goal of making mixed a showy "event." Stunt-y, indeed, and not so fair to the regular doubles players. But it will bring people out more than mixed doubles usually does and get more TV eyeballs. I'd watch more of this than regular mixed. Though, it will be easier since it's not competing with the other events at the same time.

I’m going to be there for quallies this year, this should be a fun evening

The attraction for the qualies used to be the free entrance. I am sure USTA is going to ticket the event. It is reasonable given the star power.

But this is not to revive doubles, a good shrewd move by USTA to make more money.

The cost of tickets keep skyrocketing and unaffordable making it an elite sport. USTA makes good money from the corporate suites and the boxes but they don't want to leave any stone unturned even with the bleachers.

I don't see this as entirely a bad thing although I don't like the exho-y match format.

People have always complained about the visibility of doubles and a lot have reservations about the skill level and claim that "singles players would've dominated but they just don't have time".

So this is a good move to bring attention to doubles and also to find out whether singles players can really excel in doubles compared to the specialists. If they do excel then they deservedly should be in the draw.

But the only problem is the format which I dislike - to draw in the singles players you need a reduced format but in the long run this format makes a mockery of doubles. Kind of a dilemma there.

so do you think a 2 day event warrants crowning a Grand Slam champion? They did a dry run for this last year, it got great crowds etc, but it was just called an exo. I'm not sure this adds any more excitement vs last year, someone like Carlos will just be giggling throughout it like an exo(and they are allowing a retired player like Kyrgios play - why stop there? let Agassi or Mac play). I guess this will be Zverev/Fritz/Tiafoe's best chance to have a grand slam title to their name.

They announced the concept months ago describing the format and the goal of getting some of the top players to play. They’ve been selling tickets for it since 5-30-2025. Why would anyone rely on Reddit? No one is buying tickets to see the regular pro mixed doubles teams.
