USO Ballboys/girls: why are they so...OLD...?

...Why are the US Open's ballpeople so much older than the kids at the other Majors? Is it tournament policy to select college-aged kids or something ? Where do they recruit these guys from ?

"Ballkids" for US Open must 14 and older (no "upper" limit on age). Before this year USTA were not that strict and younger kids had a chance to become a ballkid, but this year they did not even except an application if you're younger than 14. Some of the "ballkids" on AA stadium work as tennis instructors in the USTA NTC.

Because the only requirements are that the ball person has to be 14 years old and be able to fulfill the physical requirements, like throwing and running. They do try to take a certain percentage of younger people but with night matches it's easier to use older people because of child labor laws and school being back in session.

Better old than fat. I remember one year when practically every ballperson and linesman/woman was overweight.

Ball Boy: Hey pops, isn't there a better way to spend your twilight years?
Kramer: I may be old, but I'm spry

Great episode, maybe one of the best ever. Trivia: which player did Kramer injure at that USO?

I think there is a limit to the # of hours children can work each day/week. An adult could work much more, making scheduling easy.

Becasue all the kids in the USA are overweight from eating too many burgers and playing too many video games

USO 2000 how do u know so much about the ballboys. Its all correct.

a rookie this year was 49 years old and had a crazy mustache.
During the finals and later matches like that, all of the ballpersons are the ballperson supervisors or like 17 year veterans.

Uni, what do you think of this incident?

that kid is one of the superveterans. If the supervisors find out im guessing they will be pretty mad. especially during the final. alot of the veterans like to goof around but that is mostly on the outer courts and this kind of behavior is never seen in Ashe of all places. I guess we'll have to see if he's back next year.

speaking of goofing around, there are superveterans that give the rookies a hard time. there is this one superveteran that likes to throw line drives to the other ballkids, and in one incident he almost got into a fight with one of the rookies. Supposedly he got yelled at but he ballboyed that night on ashe and was carrying the flag during the trophy presentation on monday so apparently he didn't receive any harsh punishment.

As for that video, im sure he was just fooling around. it was like a quick thing and he didnt think anyone would notice
