oh. my. gosh. I did a typo in the poll. Obviously, the last choice should read: Federer in 5

I thought Federer today dropped his level from where it had been this tournament up to now. Credit to Djokovic also who raised his game to compete with Federer today. Even so Del Potro was amazing today. I actually could see an upset here. Then again Federer tends to raise his game to what he needs more often than not, and this is Del Potro's first ever slam final and the guy hasnt even won his first Masters title yet. He won easily today so fitness shouldnt be a problem.

Not really sure but Del Potro in 4 sets.

Fed in very quick 4.

anything's possible! :)
but I doubt (the "quick" part) it very much.

at this particular point in time, Delpo's more stable mentally than Nole was tonight. Either way, it should be a very good match! :D

Excellent analysis! :) ..... In fact, it's so good that I'm gonna go along with it. I can't really decide what will happen if it goes to 5. If the weather were sunny and hot (as it was in Australia), then a fifth set would favor Roger (as it did in France). But tomorrow's match is scheduled for the same time as today's, so a 5th set would end up under the lights, and the cooler weather might favor Delpo. Darn. At this moment I can't decide between delpo in 4 or delpo in 5. But I do believe that this is the year of the young turk at the USO.

I have a lot of respect for DP as a player, but I am afraid that on this surface Fed's slice BH will be the death of him. He will need to move forward and attack the net. Oh, and serve like he did at the French in the first 3 sets.

He's currently 0-7 in sets won against Federer on HC. And the best he's ever done is win 4 games in a set.

I'll be quite pleased with a victory either way, to be honest. I think I'll be rooting against Federer this time, though. Auf vamos Juan Roger Martin Del Federer!

Delpo is looking very dangerous. I think he's got a great shot, but the nerves of being in his first grand slam final against the player he idolizes is probably a bit too much.

Head says Federer, heart says Delpo.

2 things I want.

1. I want del potro to give federer a tough match
2. Fed better be wearing his night outfit. I have no idea why he wasn't tonight. I love him in all black.

Federer in 4 sets. Del Potro's time will come but most players dont win their first slam final. He wont be an exception I dont think. Federer was rusty today after all that time off, but he will be back up another notch for this final. Del Potro will be a bit nervous and not play at his level today, and remember Federer is another planet from Nadal on a truly fast court (eg- U.S Open courts, year end Masters courts).

Didnt you say your 6 favorite players in order in my thread were:

Federer
Djokovic

Roddick

Nadal

Murray
Del Potro

Something like that. Or maybe I am confusing you with someone else.

Federer is a bad matchup for Del Potro, especially on this surface:

1. Federer loves big hitters who give him pace to work his defense to offense game on. This is how Del Potro plays.
2. Federer likes to play against players who rely somewhat on a big serve. He neutralizes it well. Del Potro relies on his serve a fair bit.
3. Del Potro's weakness is the low ball, due to his height. Federer has a godly slice that works reasonably well at the US Open because it is a low bouncing surface. This is different than at RG, where Federer's slice was never going to be quite as effective.
4. Federer is good at taking the ball relatively early and taking away the time that Del Potro needs for his huge groundstrokes.

With that said, though, Del Potro is in glorious form, so it will be close. I say Federer in 4.

I wouldnt be upset if Del Potro won. He is a kewl kid and it is time he won something big anyway. I was pretty upset when he lost the Canada final only due to fatigue and a tougher draw than Murray. He is due to win atleast a Masters but a slam would be even better. So either way I am happy.

Fed in straight sets of 4.. This was just an abberition(sp?) of what Del Potro is actually capable of when he is playing lights out tennis.. He wont repeat this performance tomorrow

my 6 favorite players, or how I would rank the top 6 in terms of favorites? a bit different. Some of my favorite players aren't even in the top 6. Although that is kind of how I would rank them. Although murray would be last, not del potro. I just want d-pot to give fed a good match. I'm first and foremost a tennis fan, so I appreciate good tennis above all.

I know he had those nerves big time in australia, but then less so in Roland Garros .......... He might have a hard time sleeping tonight and, granted, Feds had kind of a perfect match tonight. Both won their semis in straights, but maybe beating Rafa was a tad harder than beating Nole ....... so I'm pretty sure that the confidence Del gained from his semifinal win plus how close he was in the French ... plus the possible intangibles ... Delpo w/b in excellent form to realize his dream. Yes, he's never beaten Roger before, but tomorrow night w/b the night of firsts:

First Grand Slam Final + First Grand Slam Championship!!!

Vamos Delpo!!!

Abberation. And I agree. Del Potro won't play quite that well for a few reasons.

1. It is hard to play your VERY best two matches in a row. Chances are you won't do it.
2. He is in his first GS final. So it is likely he will tighten up a bit and play less well for that reason.
3. Federer's style will make him less comfortable than Nadal's style made him, and thus result in DPs quality decreasing.

This is not gonna be a walk in the park for Roger. Delpo is serving very well. But Federer will prevail after 4 close sets.

Federer in 4 sets! This is for history. I wanna see 6 straight.

So do I, Friend! :)

But the history I want to see is:
First Grand Slam Final + First Grand Slam Championship!!!

Delpo took the titles in the first 4 finals in which he ever played.
Now he's in his first grand slam final.
Let the natural progression progress! :D

(you can always see your vision of history next year ;) ... or the next :p)

Is that even possible?
"straight sets of 4" ??? :?:

Movement-wise Djokovic matches up fairly well with Federer during a rally. Del Potro not so much. If Federer can get Del Potro on the move with attacking shots advantage Federer.

Return of serve - Based on previous matches I've seen Del Potro doesn't return Federer's serve not nearly as well as Djokovic can. Fed's even said so about Djokovic's return. Fed will serve a lot more aces against Del Potro.

With the semi and final played without a rest day it's probable Federer was pacing himself hence partly the reason he played the way he did. I expect him to be much better in the final.

I meant how you ranked just the top 6 in terms of favorites. I think that your order was typed and spaced out something like that, is that right? Basically you said Federer was your favorite and Djokovic almost equal, that you liked Roddick quite a bit, Nadal somewhat, and didnt really care for either Murray or Del Potro.

I think the moment will get to JMDP. And remember Fed is playing with 'house money'. So I say Fed in 3: 4, 4, 2.

But JMDP will win the next major final he's in - and might be in January '10...

Tis true :o. I wont be upset if Del Potro wins. I really like the guy. His tennis ability is tremendous. I was amazed at his ball striking capabilities. May the better man win.

um yeah, I think it was something like that. Although del potro is definitely above murray and is slowly gaining his way up.

but like I said, I just want a good tennis match above everything else to see roger in black because darth fed is hot. *drool*

OK was just curious. Federer and Del Potro are my 2 favorites of the top 6 by far. I dont even really like the others in the top 6 to be honest. The others I like more are outside the current top 6. Nadal, Roddick, Djokovic, Murray, no really a fan of any of those 6 for some reason.

Federer in four sets, but I'd be fine I wouldn't mind seeing Del Potro take it.

What better way of winning your first major than winning it by beating the grand slam king?

I change my vote -- Federer in 4.

Although both are fresh, so who knows. I hope it is an epic match, but Federer is lethal this time of year on these courts.

Federer is terrible matchup for Delpo. He'll keep the ball low, take it early. Move him around the court tire him, mix the game up - feed him short balls and drop shots. Delpo annihilated Nadal and really was playing great tennis. But there were a lot of tense moments and I can't see Federer losing his serve as Nadal. It can bail him out and make every set more competitive. And I can see Delpo chances diminishing as the match goes by.

Delpo gave him a great battle at the RG, but he served and played lights out for 3 sets, I doubt he can repeat that serving day and Federer is playing much better after RG.

I'm hoping for a high quality long match, regardless if who wins. Good luck to both players.

Federer in 4 sets. Del Potro's time will come but most players dont win their first slam final.

I disagree...many great players won their first slam final:

Connors (74 Australian)
Borg (74 French)
McEnroe (79 US)
Wilander (82 French)
Becker (85 Wimbledon)
Edberg (85 Aus)
Chang (89 French)
Sampras (90 US)
Courier (91 French)
Stich (91 Wimbledon)
Bruguera (93 French)
Muster (95 French)
Kuerten (97 French)
Rafter (97 US)
Safin (00 US)
Hewitt (01 US)
Fed (03 Wimbledon)
Roddick (03 US)
Nadal (05 French)

Losing your first slam final seems to be the exception, rather than the rule for players who ended up HOF-worthy and/or won multiple slams in their careers -- notable exceptions to this rule are Lendl and Agassi.
