USTA Men's league

enishi1357

Semi-Pro
I will start playing usta league 3.5. Self rated 3.0 but my experienced captain/friend will most likely put me in singles.

Started playing in high school and only really started playing three times a week past years. Only really invited to play league after I improved my serve although I had good strokes.

I played my experienced teammate who's 3.5 and lost 0-4. That said I was experimenting my serve so it doesn't really count.

Played a new 3.5 teammate and won 3-1. He's prob more 3.0. Basically only hitting second serve the whole time and won on his UE.

Care to venture a guess my result at men's 18+ league?

Once I played league I will upload a vid of one of my match. Then we can reassess future results.

My assessment: I believe I will win all my matches because I have fast first serve and consistent second serve.

That's an optimistic prediction based on limited statistics and you didn't even have a service break against the experienced 3.5 opponent. There is a lot more to winning matches than having a fast first serve. Have fun with it and good luck.

Hard to say since you only gave 2 data points and one of them was a 3.0. A fast first serve and consistent 2nd will win you a lot of matches at 3.5 but not all 3.5s will fold.

Also, you self-rated at 3.0 and project you're going to go undefeated at 3.5; seems you under-rated yourself by 2 levels.

If you think you could win all your 3.5 matches, why did you rate yourself as 3.0 then?
did your captain ask you to sign up as 3.0 for upcoming mixed season?

2-8

Looking forward to seeing video.

This is why I hate self ratings and USTA needs to get rid of this!!! Sandbagging at its finest!!! You need to be 3.5/4.0 NOT 3.0 that’s ********!!!! Your cheating/manipulating the system, i hate players like you that do this. As it’s reason I’ve quit playing this lame asa league. It’s people like you that have ruined USTA

Good luck, I will guess you will lose slightly more than you will win if you are line 1, if you're line 2 and fit, I'll just assume you are fit, you will win slightly more than you lose. Match experience is underrated.

Good luck, hope you have fun and compete out there. 3.5 might be a lot harder than you seem to think. Lots of junkballers and pushers at 3.5 that love to play guys like yourself with a "hard" serve and "good" strokes, they will dink and dunk and never miss and drive you insane until you learn to beat them
This is exactly what’s going to happen. Nothing is more fun than just neutralizing a big server’s fast ball and watching him self destruct when he gets angry that he has to hit more shots afterwards to hold serve.

As @FuzzyYellowBalls said, you can’t really simulate match experience. There are so many different types of 3.5: Big servers, junk ballers, pushers, groundstrokers, lobbers, S&Vers, slicers, angle artists. Most 3.5s have SOMETHING that can be annoying if you’ve never seen it before. Dominating 3.5 and moving up to 4.0 as OP envisions is about knowing how to handle all the crazy stuff people can do.

If you've never played USTA league before, I recommend self-rating a level lower than you intend to play if you are eligible. That way, if you're wrong about you're ability, you have a self-rating at the lower level that you can use to immediately register at the lower level instead of throwing yourself to the mercy of a self-rating appeal. Opie might think he's going to be undefeated at 3.5, but if he is wrong and loses his first two matches 6-0 6-1, he'll be glad to have a 3.0S rating. If he wins the first two 6-0 6-1, he can easily appeal up to 4.0 (or just play another match or two until he is "promoted" to 4.0).

If you're winning at 3.5 and self rated as 3.0, you're probably going to rack up dynamic rating strikes really quickly
Strikes against 3.0, which are irrelevant if he's not playing for a 3.0 team. A friend of mine did this last year. He rated 3.5S but only played 4.0. He didn't win all of his matches at 4.0, but he had a winning record and never either registered or intended to register for a 3.5 team, so half way through the season, he got a "promotion" email from the section saying his rating was adjusted to 4.0. No big deal since he wasn't on a 3.5 roster. He had played fairly high level in high school years ago, but was just getting back into competition after many years off, so he rated 3.5 because he was unsure of how competitive he could be after not playing for a long time, but he ended up competitive enough to play 4.0, so the 3.5 rating was just a precaution that went by the wayside.

Recall destroying a 3.5 team with power only to get humiliated the next day by their teammates with endless lobs. My partner and I never won another match and split up that summer. From the penthouse to the outhouse overnite.

Victim of the defensive lobbers here. I’ve spend the last 6 months fixing my completely neglected overhead skills! I had been standing at the baseline trying to rip thier lobs with shoulder height forehand winners… while they stood double back… never again.

Having rotator cuff surgery tomorrow so my OH may need a lil rehab. Friend who relied on his serve and OH had the same surgery and lost his mojo. Year later trashed his other shoulder in an auto accident. Refused the torture of rehab again so he retired from tennis and picked up a pool cue. Hear the shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint so rehab/recovery is tricky.

Isner has a fast first serve and a consistent second serve....but he doesn't win all of his matches

I bet you win at least half your matches, so .500. I self rated as a 3.0 for 2021 18+ 3.5 and finished 1-3 (the win was a default). The biggest difference between me and you is you played in HS. I'm 34 and started playing pre pandemic. Give em hell.

Not a lot of info to go on, but if your best weapons are your serves, you may be in some trouble. Experienced 3.5 singles players will block back your serve then dink and dunk you around the court. Either way, it will be good for you to learn how to construct points and come up with a strategy on the fly.

55% win percentage for your season

Lot of junk-ballers at 3.5, fast serve won't help you there. Not even junk-ballers per-se, just old guys who hit slices because its effective and easier.
Maybe you are of a similar ilk and will beat them to the punch, I don't know.

That said, good luck and have fun!

I'll go with .500. I'll be happy with that.
