So, the USTA National Men's Open, Women's Open, Mixed Open Indoor Championship 2007 Tournament is coming up, starting the day after Christmas!

Any forum-goers going to be playing in any of the events?

I signed up for the (mens) singles, I'll probably be there for the first day, or possibly two if I get lucky :-) I'll try to get a little footage of the various matches if I have time.

Hope to see some of you out there (assuming my Grandparents don't tag along! eek).

*Edit*

Here are some videos I took during the round of 64.

I sat in one spot, and had to zoom in through netting to get some video, so these may be blurry or out of focus. Alas.

P.S. I told you we would have a full 128 draw by the end.

Still fewer than last year. Hope they have consolation.

Looked over the entry list, and there are a few bad mother f****** in the mens draw.

J

Haha, I know you're playing! Are we really the only ones? I guess it's an odd date as well, being the day after Christmas and all.

I was getting worried that my name wasn't getting added for a few days, but yeah, looks like they finally updated it when the entries closed! How long do they usually take to pick the seeds? I see some familiar names, but nothings standing out, haven't been involved in singles tournaments in a long time!

Man, if I was in any sort of shape I would have loved to play this one. There are a few really good players in that draw.

Haha tell me about it! I just got to hit with a college level player for the first time in a looong time, and after 20 minutes of hitting (had to take off for shower/class) i was a bit sweaty, and completely drenched by the time I had walked to the front of the facility! I'm going to be the guy with 10 shirts per match :P

Alas, I will miss it this year. I had every intention of playing it again last year.

Jolly I will you to win. Yes "will". However, I have no idea what your name is, so you will have to email it to me so i can keep track.

Good luck!

What round would you guys hypothetically play each other?
Good luck in your matches. What is the temperature usually inside
the facilities? Do they have heaters?

All I needed to see was one name: Crabb. Good luck getting through that field, guys, as it looks to be nasty if his name is in the mix.

No worries, you playin clay court opens in 08? Will take a lot more than will, some tough customers in that draw.

Never mind guys like corey parr who plays #1 for wake.

Didn't see Justin Natale in there, but he sodomized the field last year.

Some other D1 Studs in there as well as some killer TPs.

Yeah, Natale can ball. I just moved away from New England, and there was only a couple of guys could take Justin, like Gresh and Zaher. Gresh can really ball, from what I hear.

For a tournament labeled "National" it has a very regional flavor. It looks like 90% or so are from NY, NJ, CT, and PA. I have seen some category II events in AZ and CA that look way more "national" than that.- Not a criticism just a comment:)

There are only 2 Cat II tourneys in mens open.

The Nike, and one other.

I find most nat opens are strongly local. Then as you get up into age group territory people start to travel.

For anyone worth a hoot in the open div, they are either primarily playing college or pro, so it isn't high on their list to travel to, since USTA opens are more for fun, or to keep sharp when not playing whatever it is that they primarily play.

Whilst USTA Age group tourneys are probably the biggest thing a 30-35+ year old guy has goin on. So he would be more likely to travel, and have the money to do so.

Actually a lot of the nationals are like this. It's not so easy for people to get to national tournaments due to work or family demands. Also, keep in mind that this tournament is the day after Christmas, so that would mean a lot of people would have to either miss Christmas, or fly out Christmas day to make it (again, assuming they celebrate Christmas). Not only would the flight be incredibly expensive, but the end doesn't justify the means: this is not the time of year to spend all of that money when they aren't going to win anything back by playing.

^^^ I should post a picture of how horrific last years T-Shirt was just to accentuate the fact that you get NOTHING. It is a pretty lame tourney.

J

Yup. And I used to HATE when these guys would show up in some random tournament. You see them play and ask the TD 'WTF is this guy doing here?' TD just chuckles and says 'He just wants to keep his strokes up.' It is a clinic when these guys show up. Ginepri did that to tune up for tour one year. Demolished the field.

Yeah, I've got some of those. I traveled to a tournament once, and what color was the t-shirt for an Open tourney? Baby fricking blue. Couldn't believe it. It made a nice dust rag. :)

I remember a local tourney.

J011y: "Hey! Why am I the #2 seed?"

Director: ............

J011y: Who is that?

Director: ...........

J011y: From where?

Director: ............

J011y: Oh, ok then. This should be fun.

I said, why can't they just give us a plain, high quality navy blue or black T-shirt with a little USTA logo on the left pocket area, and 2007 National Open under it in fine print. Something classy that you could actually wear in public, instead of the gaudy garbage that they handed out.

That does surprise me, as it is a pretty prestigious tournament. It's not like some Burger King Open or something. That's a big deal, and you should get a good one.
But hey: it beats the pink one I got once. Yes, you heard right. . . pink. It was funny: as my gf and I were leaving the TC, she points to a garbage can and starts laughing. The garbage can was overflowing with pink t-shirts.

One more got added. :)

Niiice!

I remember Boe-Wiegaard from my Junior years. Always saw him near the top for the NE championship level tourneys, but never had the chance to play him!

I'm very excited to play. Apart from hitting with my dad every few months when I see him, my only tennis has been teaching my fiancee! I miss fierce competition like this :D !

Good luck, man. :) And you will definitely get your fill of good comp at this tourney.

i have a kinda off topic question. I just looked at the entrance fee and i was wondering if it costs that much to participate in most tournaments. $85 is a lot. i was thinking about starting to play usta tourneys but if the entrance fees are that much idk if i wanna...

No, it's only that high for nationals or specialty tourneys (fundraisers, qualies, etc.) Local entry fees usually range from $20-40.

That is a lot, some locals cost that much, most are 40-60 here in NY.

J

J-Rog; if you don't mind me asking, about what NTRP level are you?

*Shrug* they are just numbers to me. I just show up at the tourneys and play who they tell me to. And I practice with whomever I want.

My goals for 08 are top 5 in my section and top 50 in the country in Mens Open. That is a tall order, but I end up being ranked higher than my ability would indicate because I play a lot of tourneys.

J

Yeah, but there's a difference: you know you should be ranked high, versus the guys (you know who I'm talking about) who play every tournament and think they're justified to be Top 10.

Hey j0lly, when do they usually post the draws and seeds? Is it a last minute thing, or will we be seeing it up pretty soon?

Sooo, whereabouts in the draw are you? With 125 entrants, what's the deal with a 256 draw? The 5th seed didn't get a bye! Weird setup...

Saturday, December 29
7:00 AM – 8:00 AM - 9 Practice courts – (on a walk-on basis)
Main Draw Schedules TBD
NB 2:00 PM – MW Singles Consolation – limited to 1st match losers – on-site sign up required

Niiice!

132 entrants.

Are you gonna be attending the party and or social?

J

ohhh I see!

Nope, I'm going to be an anti social bum! My fiancee is going to be a bit bored sitting around all day, so we're going to take off after the tennis is over

I only recognize Koniecko and Mihdawy. Is it really that strong of a tournament? I don't know much about east coast tournaments.

I would say the clay courts in lauderdale, and hard courts in san diego are stronger, as well as some of the big opens in cali. But it is pretty solid.
