USTA Rating Promotion Possible?

I'm trying to figure out if I have a chance to be promoted from a 2.5T (2009 year-end) rating to 3.0C rating by receiving a third strike in my next match (if I play at the same level I've played so far) in my USTA Men's 3.5 league. Here are my two results so far:

1. Won 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8 ) [My partner was 3.5C, both opponents were 3.5C.]
2. Won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 [My partner was a .3.5C, opponents were a 3.5C and a 3.0C.]

I only played in USTA tournaments and a USTA mixed doubles league this year before joining my 3.5 USTA league team. I've been sort of obsessing about this for a while, and, if I'm just plain wrong, it would put the issue to rest until the year-end ratings come out. What do those of you who know how the DNTRP process works think about this? Thanks very much in advance.

As far as I remember only S (self) and A (Appeal) ratings are subject to three strike disqualification. Not sure about T (Tournament). But you should not be worried unless you are playing a 2.5 league as well. Even if you get a third strike and become a 3.0 it would not affect your 3.5 league results, but it would reverse all your wins at 2.5 level.

I don't mean to accuse you of anything, but frankly based on these results you should not be playing 2.5 at all. If you are able to win at 3.5 level then you can not be a 2.5 level player. You are at least a 3.0.

Thanks for your response, Josh. I'm actually hoping for a promotion, as I was demoted from a self-rated 3.0 to 2.5 last year because I played in one tournament in a 3.0 draw and got smoked twice. I tried the automatic appeal process and was denied. (I've never played in a 2.5 tournament draw or a 2.5 league, only in 3.0 singles tourney draws, one 3.5 men's double tourney, and a 7.0 mixed league this year.)

As a tournament-exclusive rated player, I can receive strikes in league play, according to the USTA site. I'm just trying to determine how likely or unlikely a promotion is for me in my current 3.5 men's league with my match results. It would be nice to get bumped up before the year-end ratings are determined.

Your strikes will be at the 2.5 (and possibly 3.0) level. If you are playing 3.5 leagues, you have nothing to worry about. I'd guess that if you keep winning, even against weaker 3.5 competition, you will be promoted to 3.5C.

Thanks for your thoughts, J_R_B. I hadn't seriously considered the possibility of moving up to a 3.5C rating; it's just more incentive to play well going forward.

usta ntrp inequities

usta leagues are passe because it's all based on ntrp which doesn't take into account age and gender. sorry, but a 4.0 senior woman doesn't have a chance against a 4.0 30-year-old guy. tencap is much more fair and modern.

Bleah. I don't need to worry about promotion anymore. I played a singles match for my USTA 3.5 team and lost 0-6, 0-6. My serve was off, but he was just much better than I was. Oh well.

Your loss will not have any impact. For one, 0 & 0 results are discarded by the computer and do not count towards your rating. And secondly, if you are a 2.5 playing a 3.5, that is the expected outcome - in fact, it is not unexpected even for a 3.0 playing a 3.5.

So you're still in the race

I did check my opponent's record (4-1, all in singles), and he beat a 3.5C player in the #1 slot 6-0, 6-1 earlier this season. So, I don't feel quite so badly about getting clobbered.

On an amusing note, my captain, being short singles players, asked me to play #1 singles in our last USTA 3.5 match of the season. Tennis masochist that I am, I agreed and played a strong 3.5C who beat me 4-6, 0-6. (Despite the second set score, I had a really good time.) The #2 singles player for our team, a 3.5C, lost his match 0-6, 2-6. This USTA league stuff is bizarre. Fun, but bizarre.

You may have seen early ratings, but these can change and sometimes do.

That's no shock. Just playing matches at 3.5 even if you get blown out is going to generate strikes at 2.5. Based on your results, I still think there is a moderate chance that you will be promoted to 3.5C when the year-end ratings are published. Good job, man. Onward and upward...

No worries, spoke. I was rated 2.5T (tournament exclusive) at the end of 2009, which made me eligible for strikes this year.
