USTA 'Singles' League

On the USTA site one of the next leagues is a 3.5 and a 4.0 singles league (40+). Are these team driven with a captain and all that with 3 singles lines or whatever or is it just a league of a buncha dudes that play and it's every man for himself, kinda like a ladder? The need for teams in singles seems a little unnecessary.

Any insights?

If one can form a team based on singles and doubles or just doubles, why not also just singles? I would assume the same motivations apply [matches are all arranged for you, team camaraderie, playing a wider range of opponents vs DIY, etc].
Agreed if it is a singles team. But some singles leagues are Flex leagues where it is just one individual on each "team" and they are responsible for arranging the time/location of the matches with the other players in their flight. These leagues often don't count for ratings, but sometimes they do.

Yeah, I forgot about ratings.

How popular are Flex leagues?

It will be similar to the other leagues. You will be on a team of 4-6ish guys and you play 3 singles points each match against another team.

This is what I was hoping for. I don't really know a lot of guys that like to play singles so I'm afraid I'll struggle to find a team which is why I was hoping it was just like some kind of flex thing where you play the other guys alone in a non team setting.

Around here, the leagues that “matter” - the ones everyone cares about and have big turn out, interest, camaraderie, post season, bragging rights, etc - are spring adult league, mixed, and combo. No one cares about singles leagues, basically an afterthought. Most people play singles on their club or city ladder and that seems to work better.
