Networkers claim women's 4.0 title at USTA Southern Sectionals Monday, July 30, 2007By ARTHUR L. MACK Sports Correspondent
The Networkers, a women's level 4.0 tennis team from Mobile, punched a ticket to the USTA national championships with a 3-2 victory over Mississippi/Jackson in the USTA Southern Sectionals at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The national 4.0 tournament will be held Oct. 26-28 in Tucson, Ariz.
The Networkers are the first 4.0 team from Mobile to qualify for the nationals.
"It's really exciting that we are going to the nationals," said Networkers team captain Brenda Barter. "Again, we won 3-2, but this time, it did not come down to the final court. The ladies are all happy and excited to win. We're looking forward to going to Tucson."
The Networkers swept both singles matches as Kana Hirukawa defeated Mississippi's Denise Jones 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and Ivone Giraud topped Tracy Ashworth 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
In No. 3 doubles, Jill Middleton and Leigh Delaney of the Networkers outlasted Mississippi's Laura Leigh Moody and Kimberly Nolen 6-0, 7-6.
"It was the first time we were able to win both singles matches at sectionals," said Barter. "In No. 3 doubles, we were way up in the second set, but it got tough and we had to go to a tiebreaker to win. We had a lot of support from our fans and fellow tennis players, and we're glad to relax and enjoy the win."
Louisiana/Lafayette won the men's 4.0 title, defeating Kentucky/Lexington 4-1 to join the Networkers in Tucson.
North Carolina/Lake Norman dominated the women's 4.5 finals, defeating Mississippi/Jackson 4-1. In the men's 4.5 finals, North Carolina/Cary edged Georgia/West Georgia 3-2. Both North Carolina teams qualified for the national 4.5 championships Sept. 28-30 in Tucson.
Kentucky/Louisville and Georgia/Atlanta won the women's and men's 5.0 titles, advancing to the national tournament Sept. 28-30 in Indian Wells, Calif. Georgia/Atlanta was undefeated during the tournament.
In the seniors finals, Georgia/Atlanta and South Carolina/Hilton Head went undefeated, with both teams going 3-0 to take the men and women's 3.0 division titles, respectively. Both will play in the nationals Oct. 26-28 in Indian Wells, Calif.
South Carolina/Charleston, defeated Tennessee/Chattanooga 2-1 to take the senior women's 3.5 title. Louisiana (B)/Shreveport's men defeated Louisiana (A)/Baton Rouge 3-0 to take the senior men's 3.5 crown. Both winners advance to the nationals in Tucson on Oct. 19-21.
