UTR new algorithm in place-many college players, programs bumped up

The Power 6 UTRs of many teams- especially some of the midmajors may have been bumped up 2 points, e.g. from 74 to 76. This new algorithm at first glance seems a move in the right direction. The biggest jump up it seems is to the mid lineup power team players or the top 4 mid major players. The top players were already aligned correctly. Most college players in this group went up at least .2 with many rated up .45. The juniors we know who play nationals stayed about the same but some of the 16s who were rated as high as the 18s dropped back .2 or more. There were several juniors I had noted in the past who I thought were way overrated (guys rated .5 or more above their best win), and those players dropped about .5 in this new algorithm.

I read that UTR spent a year working with college and junior coaches to align UTR better between groups. In the past, juniors had been overrated up to .5. Some college coaches took UTR as gospel in the past while others thought it was only useful for comparing college players-juniors who they'd seen play were rated as high as their line 2 or 3 even though the junior playing level was lower. Now with these changes, hopefully players and coaches can find the right fit. College freshmen who had dropped .5 off their August Kzoo ratings who are playing in the lineups are now rated about .2 off their August junior rating. Thanks UTR for taking the time to create and test an algorithm that is more accurate across groups. Just wish you could include more than 30 matches for juniors since that could be just 3 months of activity or less for juniors who go deep in large draw tourneys-wish at least 6 months of results were included for all players. 30 matches will cover Sept-May for most college players unless they play a lot of the circuit as well as college matches. Last summer in the large state and sectional tournaments required for endorsement to national tournaments, my son played 20 matches in 4 weeks playing in just 2 junior and 2 men's tourneys.

Thank you for sharing your observations. With the new rating algorithm framework, Team UTR will now be in a better position to provide continuous improvements with how the UTR system works. Future considerations may include the 30 matches rating criteria.
