VCORE 98 (2021) String Setup

What is your setup?

I recently switched over from my 97HD and used the same set up, Mayami Big Spin 1.25 mains/Magic Twist 1.25 crosses @44lbs.

Great setup in my HD, too stiff however in the VCORE. I understand the VCORE is a stiffer frame but I did not expect it to be this noticeable.

When I demoed the VCORE, it had a full bed of PTP 1.20 and it did not feel stiff at all and that was strung higher at 52lbs.

I’m using 17g Laserfibre Native Tour at 55lbs in my new 98+. Does not feel stiff to me at all.

I am, however, going to try gut/poly again when I go indoors in October, just for fun. I did gut/YPTP for 8+ years before I switched to full poly a little over 2 years ago.

wow i would think that OP’s VCP HD denser pattern would make string bed feel stiffer than the vcore98’s more open pattern…quite strange but i did not care for big spin at all…zero feel for me in my vcp97 310. One my new favorite combos is tier1 BK1.23/cream 1.23, good power comfort control and ball pocketing. Vcore98 is a more stiff frame than the flexy VCP HD. Velocity/cream is also a solid choice

I was quite surprised at the difference between the two frames to be honest with you. Thank you for the suggestion. I have a package of tour hex that I may highbred with ghostwire. I imagine that would be a softer set up then the previous big spin / magic twist. I see you have used tour hex, you enjoyed it, correct? Did you feel it was stiffer or softer than big spin?

tour hex a bit stiff in beginning…cream would be better cross IMO

I felt Big spin was comfortable but zero feel. Tour hex is definitely a bit more crispy/feel oriented (more feel usually means a bit harsher for the more sensitive arms) When you demoed the vcore98 with full bed PTP strung at 52 lbs, im guessing it wasnt fresh hence string bed felt softer cuz the strings were more broken in

I play mine with Fire Wire Boost 17G (1.25/1.22) at 52/50. Probably could go down a few lbs if you found your prior set up stiff though.

After hitting for roughly 7 hours the stiffness went away.

I restrung with Tour Hex/Ghostwire at 44lbs and it is softer. Not as much bite, but more control imo.

May try Big Spin/Ghostwire next time around.

Previous generation Vcore 98 305 Galaxy black, just tried very first hybrid with Gamma Jet 17 blue in mains at 55 and Tourna Quasi Gut 17 blue on crosses at 57; no science to choosing the tension for each, just stabs in the dark, but it plays great; the strings slide great across each other so no need to adjust between points. Never tried poly before in anything due to elbow concerns, but this setup hasn't caused any pain and has enhanced ability to hit hard more freely.

Have Poly Tour Rev 16L in both of my vcore 98’s (21) at 51lbs. I tried ALU Power 1.25 in one of them for awhile as that was my old string of choice in prior racquets but I did not like the feel of it and like YPTR much better. Doesn’t feel stuff to me at all, but stiffness is relative to what your used to playing with.

Signum pro firestorm 17g at 58lbs. I usually play dense pattern so going to an open pattern I increase my tension. Firestorm is a very soft and crisp poly.

Slight update to my current favorite hybrid combo: Tourna Big Hitter Blue Rough 17 at 55 crossed with Tourna Quasi Gut Armor 17 also at 55. Powerful, comfortable, playable, good feel, great spin, and inexpensive. Durability is as of yet unknown. As before, 3 previous generation Vcore 98 305s. 2 of them now have this setup, the other has the same crosses but with Gamma Jet mains.

Pro Supex Blue Gear 16g/Gosen Micro 16g and Kirschbaum Super Spiky Orange 16g/Pro Supex Maxim touch (multi) at 57/58. Minimal difference in playability once you use a decent poly/sg/multi setup.

I did notice a big difference going from natural gut mains/poly cross to a poly main/sg cross Allows me to really take a full cut at the ball and stay in. Prefer poly/sg/multi over natural gut mains. YMMV

I have been using a Tour Hex and Ghostwire hybrid strung at 46lbs. First hitting session is a little stiff but softens up and is quite predictable after that. Great ball bite and pretty predictable shots. With TH came in thinner gauges.

I run Yonex Poly Tour Spin at 52lbs, but when my elbow flares up from hitting too much I've used Luxilon Element at the same tension to great success. Element and RPM Power are both soft strings and seem to pair well with the stick.

Diadem Solstice Black 18 at 53 is da bomb for the forseeable future. Great control, great power, and great comfort. Durability is unknown but has yet to break under severe hitting or lose tension.
