The Chinese government actually initiated a campaign encouraging people to eat less meat, as they realize they don't have the farmable land and water resources to raise the farm animals demanded, don't want to rely on imports, and are concerned about an array of other problems including the environmental ramifications. The campaign was unsuccessful and meat consumption increased. They are looking into meat alternatives.

For awhile I used to communicate daily with a Chinese mainland guy I used to work with. I can remember when he began eating cheese often. It was something his government was promoting. It was a strange new food for him but he came to enjoy cheese.

I believe China is now the 3rd largest cows milk producing country in the world.

The Chinese government has outlined a plan to reduce its citizens’ meat consumption by 50%, in a move that climate campaigners hope will provide major heft in the effort to avoid runaway global warming.

New dietary guidelines drawn up by China’s health ministry recommend that the nation’s 1.3 billion population should consume between 40g to 75g of meat per person each day. The measures, released once every 10 years, are designed to improve public health but could also provide a significant cut to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Chinese Communist party has found unusual allies among Hollywood celebrities, with actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron involved in a series of new public information adverts encouraging Chinese people to consume less animal flesh to help the environment.

Should the new guidelines be followed, carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from China’s livestock industry would be reduced by 1bn tonnes by 2030, from a projected 1.8bn tonnes in that year.

Globally, 14.5% of planet-warming emissions emanate from the keeping and eating of cows, chickens, pigs and other animals – more than the emissions from the entire transport sector. Livestock emit methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, while land clearing and fertilizers release large quantities of carbon.

“Through this kind of lifestyle change, it is expected that the livestock industry will transform and carbon emissions will be reduced,” said Li Junfeng, director general of China’s National Center on Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation.

“Tackling climate change involves scientific judgement, political decisions, entrepreneurial support, but at last, it still relies on involvement of the general public to change the consumption behavior in China. Every single one of us has to believe in the low-carbon concept and slowly adapt to it.”

Meat has gone from rare treat to a regular staple for many Chinese people. In 1982, the average Chinese person ate just 13kg of meat a year and beef was nicknamed “millionaire’s meat” due to its scarcity.

The emergence of China as a global economic power has radically altered the diets of a newly wealthy population. The average Chinese person now eats 63kg of meat a year, with a further 30kg of meat per person expected to be added by 2030 if nothing is done to disrupt this trend. The new guidelines would reduce this to 14kg to 27kg a year.

China now consumes 28% of the world’s meat, including half of its pork. However, China still lags behind more than a dozen other countries in per capita meat consumption, with the average American or Australian consuming twice as much meat per person compared to China.

According to a new report by WildAid, the predicted increase in China’s meat consumption would add an extra 233m tonnes of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere each year, as well as put increased strain on the country’s water supply, which is already blighted by polluted and denuded rivers and groundwater.

The report warns that unchecked Chinese meat consumption will also degrade its arable land and worsen the country’s problems with obesity and diabetes. An estimated 100 million Chinese people have diabetes, more than any other country.

Research released by the thinktank Chatham House in 2014 forecast that China alone is expected to eat 20m tonnes more of meat and dairy a year by 2020 and warned that “dietary change is essential” if global warming is to not exceed the 2C limit eventually imposed at the climate accord in Paris last year.

A separate report by scientists at the Oxford Martin School this year found that the widespread adoption of vegetarianism around the world could bring down greenhouse gas emissions by nearly two-thirds.

“China’s move to cut meat consumption in half would not only have a huge impact on public health, it is a massive leadership step towards drastically reducing carbon emissions and reaching the goals set out in the Paris agreement,” said James Cameron.

“Animal agriculture emits more than all transportation combined. Reducing demand for animal-based foods is essential if we are to limit global warming to 2C as agreed at COP21.”

As a guideline, I can't see this as too different from Western guidelines, at the higher end at least. The question is more how you get them followed? And how do you stop the well-off from exceeding them?

Little Caesars will sell a pizza topped with plant-based sausage crumbles made by Impossible Foods — the first time a national pizza chain is using a vegan meat substitute.

Little Caesars, which is more typically known for its meatcentric items like a pizza wrapped in bacon, will test the Impossible Supreme, priced at $12, in three markets: Fort Myers, Florida; Albuquerque, New Mexico and Yakima, Washington.

Little Caesars CEO David Scrivano noticed a steady trend in the past few years of people looking for meat-alternatives, but he said that it’s hit a “tipping point in the last year.”

According to Nielsen, sales in the plant-based product category grew 17% last year, compared with a 2% growth rate for other grocery products. “It’s here to stay,” Scrivano said.

It doesn’t matter that their main demographic isn’t made up of vegetarians, he said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street. ” “It’s for meat eaters, but it can also be for people who use a plant-based diet.”

Impossible Foods said its products are now sold in more than 7,000 restaurants, including Burger King, White Castle, and Red Robin.

The demand for meat alternatives has been driving rapid growth in the category, and Impossible is looking to boost its manufacturing capacity to avoid shortages.

Impossible said it has increased the headcount and hours of operation at its Oakland, California, plant, and will install a second production line in July that will double its capacity. The company expects the second line to be fully staffed and ramped up in the fall.

“Impossible Foods has a supply chain that’s highly scalable, and the product is sourced from abundant ingredients,” the company said in an email. “The company faces no insurmountable supply-chain constraints or fundamental bottlenecks; like many successful startups, we are facing short-term ramp-up challenges resulting from demand greatly outstripping supply.”

Burger King, a unit of Restaurant Brands International, has been conducting a regional test at 59 locations in St. Louis. The test is going “exceedingly well,” Impossible said. The burger chain plans to expand the Impossible Whopper to all 7,300 U.S. restaurants by the end of 2019.

Impossible recently raised $300 million in a funding round but has said it is in no rush to go public. Rival Beyond Meat’s stock has surged since its May 2 debut.

I think all meat is dead, right? Otherwise they could run or fly away from your frying pans and BBQ grills?
 
I went vegan for about 4 months, I can say I feel great but I'm lazy so I alternate between Peschetarian/Vegetarian/Vegan based on availability.

If you interested in some mock meat for health reason (Mock meat is not very healthy, but better than actual meat) I've tasted a few good ones. Only downside is price. Vegan mock meat is generally more expensive.

Beyond Burger was amazing, easy to cook and has that grilled smoky thing. I think they used liquid smoke in the formula.
Tofurky has the best sausage and deli slices for me. Can't really tell the difference.
Gardein has the best fishless products. Fish and chips without real fish, so no more mercury.
Quorn has the best chickn patty ever. My go to McDonald was McChicken and honestly Quorn is not far by.
Local Chinese shop for fake prawn. When I eat at Loving Hut I am shocked as it taste the same and immediately asking them where to buy the fake prawn.

Cheese is the only thing that up until now very hard to dupe. But the best for cheese slices is MyLife Biocheese. As a fan of grilled cheese, I can't tell the difference really.
