I made somewhat vegetarian laksa yesterday for dinner. I just didn't feel the chicken added anything to it other than cooking time and expense.
Not meat per see but I think the Chinese government wants more Chinese to eat milk products. The Chinese government actually initiated a campaign encouraging people to eat less meat, as they realize they don't have the farmable land and water resources to raise the farm animals demanded, don't want to rely on imports, and are concerned about an array of other problems including the environmental ramifications. The campaign was unsuccessful and meat consumption increased. They are looking into meat alternatives.
China's plan to cut meat consumption by 50% cheered by climate campaignersNot meat per see but I think the Chinese government wants more Chinese to eat milk products.
For awhile I used to communicate daily with a Chinese mainland guy I used to work with. I can remember when he began eating cheese often. It was something his government was promoting. It was a strange new food for him but he came to enjoy cheese.
I believe China is now the 3rd largest cows milk producing country in the world.
A little on this can be read here:
....The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization attributes the climbing dairy consumption to “rising incomes, population growth, urbanization and changes in diets.” Those “changes in diet” are largely Western-leaning. As the culture moves in, it brings food preferences, too, even if they don’t quite make sense: Baskin-Robbins and Pizza Hut, for example, are among the dairy-intensive international brands working hard to make inroads in China. ”[D]rinking milk is increasingly viewed as healthy—especially for kids—and has caught on with an increasingly affluent middle class,” Food Safety News noted in December.
And Beijing has been spurring the drive for dairy. “I have a dream to provide every Chinese, especially children, sufficient milk each day,” Chinese premier Wen Jiabao said in 2007. The country is on track to meet that goal, apparently even if it makes them sick.
