with today's wimbledon, venus is now equal to serena imo. although serena has one more grand slam than venus at 8 versus 7, that one slam difference is neglible to me because they are both two of the middle tier greats. also, their head to head is now even at 8-8. although serena leads at 5-2 head to head at slams, this last slam for venus is all the more important because venus showed her mental toughness and simply her ability to beat her sister when it matters the most - at a grand slam that has become synonymous with venus. venus had won in 07 and 05 not playing her sister, and talk swirled about how she could go down as one of wimbledon's all time greats. but she had lost two finals to serena. venus had also lost five straight finals to serena back in 02 and 03. today, with all the pressure on venus, she showed her skill and toughness and won her fifth by going THROUGH serena which erases those two earlier wimbledon finals losses to serena imo. it shows that venus can beat anybody, in fact that she is the best on grass.

im excited to see the two williamses in finals. i hope we'll keep seeing this rivalry into the future as it is the most captivating story in the wta.

some other factors to consider that even venus and serena's careers out are: venus has been to more slam finals at 13 versus 11 although serena has a better win percentage. yet you have to consider how 5 of serena's wins came against venus which could imply more about how the two matchup and how hard it is to play your sibling as an older sister than anything; both have 8 slams doubles titles each; venus has 37 singles titles while serena has 31 although serena has more tier 1 titles and a wta year end championship while venus has an olympic gold for singles both having the gold for doubles. venus was dominant from 99 to 01 while serena was dominant from 02 to 03. their "second" part of their careers from 05 on are too similar to distinguish. serena does have the serena slam but venus has won more wimbledons which puts her with the greats who have multiple wimbledons like sampras and navratilova.

Buddy I like both of them but...

Last time I checked 8 is more than 7. Get your math right.

like i said, neglible when you consider all the factors at hand. its like saying roy emerson with 12 slam titles is better than laver with 11 if you dont consider that roy won many of his slams when his era's greats were playing professionally. factors matter and show that sometimes 12 does not beat 11, or in this case, 8 does not necessarily nor clearly beat 7.

I think this definitely pushes Venus over Henin. Yeah both have 7 slams, but all of Venus's are at the big 2 slams which gives her the edge. Venus is limited in a sense in that she has only won 2 of the 4 slams, but Henin has won 3 of the 4 but not all 4 so it isnt as big an edge on that side. Henin has the three year end #1s, however Venus's success at the big 2 slams I still think pushes her over Henin.

However Serena is still clearly over Venus at this moment. Venus clearly surpasses even Serena at the big 2 slams now with 7 combined titles to Serena's 4, but Serena's dominance in winning 4 straight and more balanced record gives her the clear edge.

So for me before today:

1. Serena
2. Henin
3. Venus

After today:

1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Henin

Venus can't be equal to Serena you know why?

Cause serena has all 4 slams...

so if you took away all of sampras' wimbledon titles, will that make him a lesser player than agassi? i think not. wimbledon has produced more all time greats than any other slam. look at fed, borg, sampras, mcenroe to name a few. i say winning multiple wimbledons is just as great as winning slams on all four surfaces. it shows consistency and takes a rare breed of player to win at the most prestigious tournament in the world.

So Samras' record doesn't count then?. Because he only passed the slam record of a guy that was an amature ;)
