As I’m expecting this to be her farewell season, I’ll keep all posts about her events here. Today she plays doubles with Svitolina in Auckland, and plays singles against Magda Linette tomorrow. She’s also confirmed to play the Australian Open. Of course I have no expectations of her but am as happy as ever to see the woman that got me into tennis play every last match that she does. Still so inspiring and exciting :D

Nice video the US Open posted yesterday, we already know she’s gonna be there lol

Team VeLina in Auckland.

I won't lie, I was hoping to see more the Venus-Leylah pairing but one's in Auckland and the other's in Brisbane. I do wonder who Venus will play doubles with at the AO? I want her to have the best chance at winning a few rounds like at the USO.

When is her sister coming back so they can play together? That would make some $ for the tournaments..and those two as well..

Taking what seriously? Taking 3 wildcards (the last, an extremely lucrative one!) from more deserving players? Then disappear again until slam time when there’s more cash to be made. This looks like simple greed not love of the game. Her singles ranking is 582. Go play in the minor events with others similarly ranked if it’s about the love.

Yep, I can sense her frustration, slice after slice after slice.
Plus she prefers someone to just hit flat, each shot just came slowly back to the baseline or moving her around. Just a nightmare.

Hard to see her R1 AO match being any different going in with zero rhythm.

Just shows that speed is not the only thing that kills.

Also it is unusual to play someone who slices that much. You cannot ever be really fully prepared for it.

EVERY pro Player should be able to deal with a slicer. It might be unusual and you might not like it but you should be 100% able to deal with it and overcome it. Plus, it’s not like it was a surprise opponent or anything for Venus. She knew what was coming. Excuses excuses.

Her excuse is she's 45 and not that bendy.

Honestly I'm impressed at how well she still plays given her age and how undoubtedly little she actually trains.

I still don't like her taking wild cards, but hey she deserved it with her career. I don't think she will win more than maybe 1 match this year though.

Exactly, her level is pretty much right there with everyone she plays. Incredible really for someone her age.

Wow - such a great match - you can just tell having not won a match at Slam level for 5 years she stopped going for her shots and trying not to lose rather than hitting to win, and Danilovic was able to hit freely as the underdog - amazing atmosphere to watch especially that last 15 minute game

Great win for Danilovic who is known for choking a lot, to beat Venus and send her home in the first round was impressive for someone like her.

Incredible match, Venus had her in the palm of her hands. Missed winning by 1-2 first serves :(

Didn't watch the match. Watching the highlights, it's pretty much that Venus simply doesn't have the legs to run anything down when the pattern changes. Good on Danilovic for having the guts to change the direction of the rallies and show the old lady the door. The outcome would have been different otherwise. Venus can still hit the ball and if she had been allowed to be the initiator of the pattern change, she'd have won.

Venus is still an incredible ball striker and is able to still generate easy power, but at 45 she has more things going against her than for her. She will likely lose next to all her matches this year, but will win the occasional one to remind us of just how good of a player she was at her best.

No mater what happens she will remain a legend of this sport.

This is now 20 first round slam losses. Not sure what the point in coming back for this was. 1-6 since coming back last year.

This is why I standby Serena won't come back, at least not for singles. Serena ego was simply too big to come back and go 1-6. I can't see it happening.

Venus has always been much more humble than Serena so I don't think these losses bother Venus all that much. But at this point maybe these losses should start to bother Venus.

I'd be surprised if Serena ever plays another singles match.

Anyway Venus has nothing to be ashamed of for this match. She likely would of won if her opponent hadn't started redirecting the ball all over the place. Venus couldn't handle the redirection.

Yes, she can still take the court and make even the top professionals work for the victory. She's just ...done.

Wait....she has had 20 freaking first round losses now?! SMH

Venus is like a freak show at the carnival. Embarrassing herself and her legacy. Danilovic, the tennis powerhouse, should be embarrassed by the just-barely performance against someone who appears closer to a wheelchair than the T.

I’m not willing to go with “embarrassing herself “ part but the fact is she’s won 8 matches since 2020 so these wildcards need to go away just based on results.
If you love tennis, I’m thinking it’s more the spotlight, play some 250’s and a full schedule.
