Her ball striking is still very good, a couple of wins here and there would be just fine. And as you said, zero expectations, just would be nice to see her win a match once in a while especially if this is her last year.

I don't think at all that her level is "surprisingly good" for a 45-year-old.
Venus has won just 8 matches after her 40th birthday in June 2020. I would expect more from a player who won 7 slams (5 Wimbledons) and still made 2 slam finals at age 36.

I know, the great Kimiko Date - remember her? - was an on-off 10-15 years ago.
But that tiny Japanese grandma beat players like Pennetta (winner USO 2015), Muguruza (winner FO 2016) and Puig (Olympic gold in 2016) in 2014 - at age 43. Took a 34-year-old Venus to three set.

And I also think that players like Navratilova, Graf, Hingis, Henin would have looked far, far better than Venus post-40. The reason may be that Venus' power tennis style is more difficult to keep up than the sort of game the above-mentioned players had.

Well that was one of the worst professional tennis matches I’ve ever seen. Wind was a factor of course. Interesting when Brett and Lindsey were discussing what Venus’ motivation is and they couldn’t come up with anything. Tarnishing a great legacy is all this is …. sadly. I remember the great Nastase stumbling around at 39. Hard for some greats to leave the arena.
 

Venus is now 0-8 for the season counting singles and doubles.

Her doubles aside here, I think she should give it one more go in Miami, and then skip the clay season to prepare for grass.
 
That this Venus keeps getting WC’s is a JOKE. She’s 45 and has been stick a fork in it done for at least 5 years. Just sux. Like embarrassingly done, why shouldn’t she just get free advertisements on the Big Board and keep her watching tv at home? Same affect. And? Her WC keeps some up and coming kid out of the tournament.

Did not see it, and have no interest in seeing it. What was your problem with the match? Scoreline indicates three sets so it must have been reasonably competitive.
We are open to granting her a wild card if she was actually making a good faith effort to play warm up tournaments. But she literally plays nothing else.
Instead, she just shows up at big tournaments and demands her wild card. So entitled. She's on a big fat ego trip.
Compare and contrast with another former champion Andreescu who's actually playing W 25 tournaments to raise her game.

Or Stan, who somehow didn’t get a wildcard, who’s been playing challengers and smaller events. At this point Venus plays tennis as a hobby and certainly should be getting wildcards to any events over the 500 level. But rest assured she will definitely be getting a wildcard to Miami.
 
Didn't see the match, but Venus won a set in a tiebreaker. Thats being competitive. Until she starts completely embarrassing herself with 1-6, 2-6 losses, which has not been happening as far as I know, she'll likely keep playing. Has to be tough on most of her fans. Some just still like to watch her play.

Definitely tough bc she keeps being in positions to win. At the beginning of the 3rd she had a handful of break points, and a handful of game points. She wins 1 BP and 1 GP and the set goes to another breaker. The score was harsh but had she cut out 2 errors it could have been a different story.

She's won 8 matches in 5 years, that's not competitive. The score line is more dictated by who she's drawing. What if she drew Townsend in the first round? Then you'd get your 6-1 6-2. She got 5 games in Austin from Tomljanovic. Enough with she's competitive, it's just not factual!!

I do think this is her last year, and I think the tournament organizers know this also, which is why she is playing many more events and they keep giving her wild cards.

There is no way Venus will be playing next season IMO, she knows she is done. I think she just wants that one final season and see if she can pick up a win before retiring very likely at the USO.

Well it was very telling yesterday when more people were watching a Pegula/Kessler doubles match than a Venus singles match. That stadium was half full and that's being generous.

I know the narrative that Venus fills stadiums is not true, I know stadium was at best half full for her matches.

I think it is more about the tournament playing the - Get your last chance to see Venus play - card and seeing if some people will come and watch. I am sure Venus has told them that she is leaving at the end of this year, which is why they are all giving her a wildcard.

I think people will "relax" when the Venus crew stops putting their spin on what happens during her matches, she can no longer over power people and she can't move. She got beat 6-1 in the third, she's not putting herself in a position to win.

Obviously, I have no say in when anybody from either tour retires, but I just don't find any "feel good" in her story.
Now, if Serena returns and they play doubles again, that could be interesting. And they could still be successful for a year or two.

I suspect the doubles has passed them by. Maybe an initial success given their previous history/reputation, but it would soon disappear and I can't see Serena sticking around once the inevitable early round losses take hold.
Venus missed the boat when she didn't take a regular doubles specialist partner a few years back. She wouldn't have had a Hingis comeback doubles success but she would have picked up trophies.
 
Venus should clearly lose some weight, to improve her mobilitie and speed on court, work on her cardio more. I watched the match and she was gassed in the third.

She has all the shorts, but looks like needs to improve fitness to come back stronger next year.

That's all well and good you can't erase the fact she's 45 years old.
Nadal and Federer look to still be in great shape, they're still not going to be able hang in today's game. Father Time is undefeated.
 
Venus is now 0-9 for the season.

She got slayed alongside Harrison in the first round of the mixed doubles. 6-4, 6-2.

Maybe a better mixed doubles partner might have helped here.

Surely she plays Miami where she is a three time champion.

Its clear this is her last year, which is why she is putting it all out there and trying to play every tournament to get that one last match win.

She won't be sticking around travelling the world for another year only to take beatings because she will be even older.
 
she's a champion. she brings people into seats. she seems to be playing her best and not just going through motions.
I have no problem w/ Venus getting all the wildcards in comparison to some "project" from IMG or Nike that they try to push...

She's so close to winning some matches - it really is tough to watch. Would love to see her get some W's and keep rolling!

She was a champion, she's won eight matches since 2021. The match in Indian Wells the stadium was 1/4 full and that's being generous, Cincy last summer was 1/2 full, stop with this narrative, she's not the attendance or financial savior of the events she's playing. It's not about giving the wildcard to some "project" it's about giving the wildcard that would help someone in the 80-100 range. Venus certainly shouldn't care about money at this point and she for damn sure doesn't care about ranking points, give it to someone who it does matter to and actually plays tennis fulltime not as a hobby.
