Venus Williams 2026 events thread :)

...And Venus doesn't make it out of the doubles 1st round in Miami. She and Fernandez lost in a tight match against Muhammad/Routliffe, 6-3, 3-6, 11-13.
 
Venus still has the tennis to go far in every tournament. Probably is that she is overweight for tennis.

She should lose around 15 pounds, work in her stamina and come back stronger and specially faster next year.
 
And people think Serena is coming back? lol

Venus is like what 0-9 or 0-10 in her last 9 or 10 matches. Serena, I'm sure don't want any part of this mess. lol

Yes I know Serena isn't Venus. But let's be honest here. Serena wouldn't do a whole lot better.

And what makes it even worse is Venus haven't gotten matched up against top 10 players or had tough opponents either for the most part. She's had pretty much as soft of draws as you can have.

Bottom line both Serena & Venus have already had their day. So them showing up and losing regularly isn't good for anybody. Not them, the game or anybody else.

Routliffe is a former doubles #1 and won the USO doubles title in 2023 and 2025.
L. Fernandez - as many may remember - lost the USO 21 final in singles against some British girl and was supposed to rule the 2020s (together with the Brit and some Japanese girl).
 
Wow, I thought there was a good chance with this doubles first round.

Another loss. Venus is now 0-10 for the season across all disciplines.

I hope USO is where she calls it a day. I would suggest probably missing the clay, and focusing on coming back to get a win on the grass somewhere.

Hopefully she didn’t pull a Borg and invest her own dough into the clothing company that went belly up. She’s into the six figures without a win in singles or doubles. Why exactly are the tournament directors giving her wildcards? New actor hubby seems to be currently unemployed as he’s along for the ride!

A friend of my father had business dealings with Borg (for SAAB) and well, let's say he wasn't remotely shocked when the tennis legend had financial woes.

It's either because she sells tickets or they're afraid of the backlash if they refuse her a wildcard. I can understand if it was a US tournament but is she really that much of a draw outside the US? I suppose everyone likes a good underdog story but it's getting to the point where it's coming across as totally unfair to others more deserving of a wildcard.

At this point, I think it's to glean some headlines/publicity.
I've got to the point whether I'm unsure if she's to be admired or pitted?
That said, if she committed to doubles with a regular partner, a favourable draw, she'd get some wins.

Kaitlin's father is from Gran Canaria, but she was born and raised in Florida, beginning her professional life a couple of years ago representing Spain.

Where are the “Venus sells tickets” people?? Plenty of good seats available and she wasn’t even on the biggest show court. The results are a joke and now attendance is following suit.

1R or 2R money is a lot higher than what players made in the mid-90s, her debut years. She may have made some bad financial investments while Serena made the right ones.

She's a former ATG assassin on the court. Nobody with that status should start accepting this many 1R losses late in their career.

I was thinking maybe Venus is sticking around for Serena to join her in doubles and they finish off their career together at Wimbledon and the US Open. I think it's getting to the point where tournament directors won't give her any wildcards.

She's definitely retiring this year and I believe the doubles will happen

That is to be hoped. Beginning pros' expenses often exceed income, what with travel, accommodation costs. It's time for Venus to stop the wild card grab, and allow players just starting out to benefit from them. I don't even make a point to watch a Venus match. We all know she still has some serving and ballstriking skills left, but clearly doesn't move well anymore. If she still wants to be in touch with the sport that was her life, why not take up coaching?

Or get a decent, regular doubles partner. Not a good singles player that's happy to have extra practice and the kudos of playing with Williams. But, a doubles specialist that can both flatter her game but also potentially provide deep runs.

Going to tough to find a regular/serious doubles partner when Venus plays tennis part time and only posts up for the bright lights of major events.

She needs to focus on doubles on tour, and the legends exo events in singles. I saw Roddick and McEnroe and Courier play a legends event, she should totally do things like that. She’s still competitive in matches on tour but not when crunch time comes at the end of a set and you have to go up a level.

Please stop with ''She's still competitive", she's won 7 matches in a 4 year span, score line or not the fact is she isn't competitive. She got 6 games yesterday from a player that nobody has heard of.

No, I won’t stop with that bc these girls ARE having to fight hard and Venus is about to be 46. She IS competitive, she just lacks the extra energy and speed she needs when the match gets tight. Idk what you’ve been reading but I’ve been hard af on Venus the last few weeks. But let’s not act like she’s just out there getting bageled, and not up a break in just about every set she plays. That’s insane at her age.

The score line is a by product of who she's playing, there's no way you can't see that. What would a Rybakina/Venus score line look like?? One of the better players she's played against was Frech at Citi Open last summer, she got 4 games.
Tough to argue that having 7 match wins in a 4 year span is competitive especially when she has not exactly faced to the top end of the WTA.

Honestly at this point, if she's going to be losing anyway, I wanna see what she can do against someone in the top 10 lol
 
I recall when her and Serena started they were criticized for playing around the minimum of events. Now Venus is hanging around and getting heat for it. I don’t really have a strong opinion either way. Just interesting.

A lot of people want her still in the game. She's getting heat for getting wildcards and not making good on them.

I think she should drop down to the challengers and see if she can get some wins against players in the 300-150 range, build some confidence and momentum.

I love Venus but I don’t think she could beat almost anyone in the top 300 unless that person was susceptible to star shock.

Do they really?? We know this how ?? She’s not exactly packing stadiums anymore.
For the 1000th time she’s not dropping down to play lower level tournaments, not enough bright lights and photo ops.

Maybe because she is a legendary player and slam champion, has 2M+ instagram followers and is recognizable worldwide.

She also gets a ton of applause when she walks out on court. Just a guess.

She wouldn't be getting WCs if she wasn't a draw.

Your original post was about a lot of people wanting her in the game. You think her fellow WTA players really care if she’s there or not? I’m pretty sure they don’t, in 2026 she’s essentially irrelevant in the big WTA picture.
She’s a draw?? The stadium yesterday was maybe 1/2 full and wasn’t the biggest stadium. Indian Wells is a US event, her match the stadium was 1/4 full, there were more people watching Pegula playing doubles. It’s run its course.
