Venus Williams 2026 events thread :)

Incredible, Venus won a match. Though Eala is playing very well on grass, she had a good run last week.

I hope it ends this USO for Venus, she got her match win. Maybe one last match with Serena to call it a career.

Venus faces Potapova - not a Q or another WC - in Washington Open R1 on Monday, 27th of July. Unless Potapova falls asleep during the match, that'll be the end of Venus' singles work week.

But then V's partnering up with Diana Shnaider for the doubles.
 
This is a joke at this point and I think the fans are checked out as well. The attendance for her matches is really dwindling.
The big issue that people should be having is that these wildcard spots could have gone to players who play tennis full time and that the potential ranking points and prize money really matter.

Certainly hope she calls it a day on singles at the US Open. She’s let every chance she had to still be a threat to, now she’s losing easier than she was the beginning of the year, the speed necessarily to be competitive isn’t there.
 
If Venus was doing this for the love of the game then she'd be happy playing qualifiers or maybe 125 level tournaments. I think there would be way less criticism of her if she just focused on playing doubles. World Team Tennis is apparently returning in December so there's also that if she finally gives up the dream of competitive professional tennis at her age.

Tennis fans love stories of old washed up pro's getting that one last big win. Grinding against the younger, firmer, and more fertile women. Venus will keep playing till she gets that win.

No problem if that’s the case but in reality that’s probably not happening. Also how about she tries doing it without the benefit of a wildcard.

I like Venus and liked watching her success during the MANY years she was in her prime…but agreed she is so far past this now. It feels self-indulgent and silly. And I agree that if it truly is for “the love of the game” than she should play a 125 or a challenger and see how it goes. Or qualies for a major, etc. I think we all know that she probably could get through those to earn her way into the major or bigger tournaments soooo what is the WTA, the individual tournaments, and Venus herself doing here? It’s not fair of them to force an exhibition on the audience and call it a competitive match.

Also just my personal opinion if I was a top player, I’d want to go out on top within reason. To drag it out—what maybe 4–5 years, I forgot now—past the expiration date is awkward. And insulting to many tennis fans who want true competition. Do like Stan or Kei (or probably some others that I’m forgetting) and play lower tournaments/qualies if you want us to believe you are doing it for the love of the game. Otherwise it’s just marketing.

If she loses her next match, she losing streak for the season enters double digits.
 

Honestly sad to watch, this girl didn't even play well. Venus's level has dropped so much since the beginning of the year. She had so many chances to win matches and played better against better opponents. If she loses matches like this one, it's well and truly over.

I don't think the USO will give her a WC.

Imagine if she had somehow won today (because Arango broke a leg or so) - Swiatek would have been her next opponent.
It would have been a brutal end to her career (0-6 0-6).

No disrespect intended, more frustration but you’re crazy if you don’t think the USTA is giving her a wildcard.
 
Needs an intervention at this point.

Maybe her friends and family will band together.

She could still focus on dubs with Serena though.

To prove your point, in the WTA Sudden Death League game, before it was determined yet that Arango would be her opponent, three people made the pick "opponent of Venus." That is to say, it doesn't matter who her opponent is, she'll lose.
Serena's flogging her weight-loss potion on a banner flown over Cincy. But I'll tune into their doubles match before turning the lights out completely on these two.
