Venus Williams career coming to an end

Hi,
so a lacklustre 2018 season for Venus Williams, appears to signal that the end of her career is near. She has stated previously, that her intention is retire in 2020. There is a clear difference in slams between Venus and Serena, yet sometimes I wonder why Venus was never able to achieve as much as Serena has. Apart from her inconsistencies in terms of serve, and being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease several years ago, 7 slams versus 23 slams is such a big difference, and I feel Venus should have achieved 10-15 slams at least.

Peaked in a tougher era

Serena does everything better than she does

Played Serena a lot in Slams

Bad mover, so only USO and Wimbly were winnable.

Venus' health started to decline right when the women's tour became ripe for the taking.

Serena took full advantage.

Serena was also more disciplined and a better tennis learner than Venus. Serena was/is better at things you can teach; Venus was better at things you can't teach.

once Venus' disease took away her physical edge (her natural athleticism and explosiveness) she wasn't going to be nearly as much as a contender for slams although she still had some competitive seasons.

still, there has never been any women's tennis player as explosive and naturally athletic as peak Venus Williams (except maybe Lenglen)!

Peaked in a tough era yes, but bad mover? she is one of the best movers ever on women's side, at least when she is/was on.

And Serena doesn't do everything better than her, Venus is a better volleyer.

Yes, "bad mover" also jumped out on me...Venus, especially for her height, has been a terrific mover.

What? Huh? Describing earning over a million dollars in prize money, plus endorsements to play 28 tennis matches as a "lackluster" year is what jumped out at me. I would love to live such a lackluster life!!

And besides who else made 2 GS finals this year but WTA's Nr 1 and her? I bet any girl from the top 20 would kill for such a lacklustre year.

I thought when they burst on the scene, that Venus was going to be the dominant player, and I guess she was at the beginning.
Crazy how it played out.

How do you even know about Lenglen. Have you actually seen tapes of her play or just going by things you read? Not being judgemental, just havent been aware there is even footage online of her playing, I wish there was.

It is hard to see how explosive and athletic any women could be wearing long tight dresses going down to their ankles though, no matter how capably athletic and dynamic they might be.

going off of footage i've seen on Lenglen (there is some on youtube, i think there was also a special about her on Amazon vid or Netflix) and then extrapolating some placing her in a more modern context.

She did things no one else could do during her day. she was beyond dominate when she played, although of course the tour wasn't nearly as competitive as it is nowadays. but given the constraints placed on women during that time (dress and edicate) the movement and ballerina like stunts thru the air she could do speaks volumes about her intrinsic athletic abilities.

I was able to find some footage of her. The swinging and diving volleys and the times she went way back beyond the baseline and retrieved labs twisted backwards are pretty amazing.

I think Venus is going to go all out next year and 2020, she knows it's literally her last 2 years, and she will want to make up for falling off a cliff after Miami this year. Hopefully she can get to another slam final, I believe she can with the right draw. She made 2 of them last year and the WTF final, so hoping for a good 2019 with epic kits. Will be a very sad day for me when my queen hangs it up.

Close your eyes and picture Morataglou saying this with a French accent, it'll convince you more. :)

Serena's serve is so much more fluid than Venus'.
Serena has a relentless will to win when behind, more than any women's opponent.
Venus' at this stage of her career, her forehand will let her down at times. As a result her game has become more inconsistent in premier events and Slams where you need to win 5 or 7 matches.
Venus is a great champion and an all-time great we are proud to have witnessed.
