Venus Williams needs to realize her career in singles is over.

Amelie Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Jennifer Capriati all retired. I think Venus can still play doubles with Serena but she should retire from women singles Unless, Venus wants to continue losing to young players like Laura Robson. Venus medical illness is precarious some days she has the strength to fight and other days she doesn't. Venus is also turning 33 next month she's a step too low to be competitive.

It is hard to believe a great champion like Venus Williams is content losing in the first and second rounds. Venus won't be competitive at the French Open and Wimbledon expect her to lose early in those slams as well in the singles competition.

Venus needs to accept the fact her glory days are long over, she's never going to win another grand slam in singles, but maybe she can in women doubles or mixed doubles.

venus is like hewitt, just playing for love of the game, even tho she hasnt been really relevant since 2008.

if thats what she wants who are we to stop her? i just wish commentators would stop picking her like its still 2001, even though to be honest that hasnt happened in a few years.

You do have a point, but I wonder, how can a great champion love losing? Justine Henin hated losing that's why she quit the first time around she didn't like it.

I think Venus and Hewitt play because they got nothing better to do with themselves. Even though they are wealthy they haven't thought about the next phase of their lives. Sometimes for an athlete it is the hardest thing to accept that their careers are over and they must move on.

well i cant speak for venus but hewitt has a wife and family so its not like he has "nothing"

he just loves to play and wants to for as long as he can before his kids get too old I guess.

again, who are we to say when they should stop?

When her health isn't an issue Venus is still a force. She's proven that even though she's been hampered.

As for her relevance it was only two, three years ago that she went three sets with Clijsters in the SF of the US Open.

She can still ball and has earned the right to play as long as she wants.

Deleted Post.

I didn't read the thread correctly. The young rising talent can easily beat her now.

Also don't ignore the fact that he earned $340K on tour in 2012. That could easily only represent 1/3 of his real earnings between exos and endorsements. He's only 32 and has to save enough to support himself for possibly 50-60 years. Every nickle counts!

Well, Venus was #2 in the world in 2010. The problem is 2011 and on, she hasn't done a thing. I hate to say it as a huge Venus fan but 2010 was it for her. It's time to wrap it up. She's a shadow of a shadow of herself.

Venus, like Rogi, loves the game so much she's not going to give up the ghost over something as silly as what armchair baseliners on tennis forums think of her career. She doesn't come to your place of work with a gold watch and a Medicare card, so let her quit on her own terms as she deals with a disease that cheated her from titles. I think she lives for those bright days full of energy when she might take down any player in the world (except maybe the top 3).

She and Serena may have some pact to play till the next Olympics and then move on to doubles. Who knows. I'd love to see them entering all the big tournaments as a doubles team. They'll kill the competition.

If she still enjoying playing tennis she should continue, not because he can't win slam. You don't want to retire and later in life feel that you wishes that you had stick around a little longer. She should retire when she finally feel she's not enjoying it anymore. Tennis is a short career, play and get the most out of it. Venus in her 30s has plenty of things to do that she likes afterward.

Capiche ?

Last year she won a singles title and a doubles gold medal, and finished the year top 25, playing an abbreviated schedule. Not to shabby for a 32 yo.

If she can sort out her back issue, which has been bothering her since Cincy though, she may be done for good.

Venus cant expect to win matches arming her serve in.

And yet, somehow she has. Why should she quit...her personal brand requires name recognition, and as long as she is involved in the sport, the more pub she gets? Of course she is not thinking about another slam run, but then given what she has already accomplished, who cares. I'm tired of all the armchair quarterbacks trying to dictate when someone should retire...as long as a player can still qualify to get in a tournamant, then they must still be better than 99.99% of the other hackers in this world who would give almost anything to even play a quali...

She's still a world class player. No need for her to quit unless she wants to.

She's not the same as before, and it doesn't matter.

Anything can happen....I would not doubt her on grass. Come on that stuff she will make everyone pay bar Pironkova and Serena.

I wouldn't be so sure that she is not thinking about another slam run.

Jones accurately points out that one of the reasons she is losing some of these close matches with top players is that she is babying her serve because of her back problems.

If she gets her serve back together, who knows how deep in a slam she might be able to make it.

I'm not talking about her match against Laura Robson. That one was hard to watch.

I also agree, Venus should play as long as she wants to.

I'm just not so sure her beating top players is over because I don't know how well her disease is responding to her efforts and I don't know if her back issues will eventually resolve allowing her to serve like we know she can once again. If she can do those things, there's no reason she shouldn't be able to play competitively against just about everyone.

I agree with this. If she wants, she should enjoy those days when she really can play well and just write off the bad ones.

I don't see whats wrong with her continuing to play singles. She can still win matches and who knows she might get on a little role. Even if she get knocked out at the first round of any tournament she plays staying competitive while having an illness and continuing to fight is a reason in itself. That's just my opinion.
