Venus Williams returned to tennis for the health benefits!

I believe Venus is joking about her own ability to pay health insurance premiums, but is making an important point for the rank-and-file professional tennis players. COBRA is somewhat expensive, and other private plans like Blue Cross Blue Shield are even more. I know people who are working until age 65-67 just because they don’t want to pay $1,000+ per month with a high deductible.

COBRA coverage is insane. I don't blame her.
This. I couldn’t believe how much Cobra was when I left my last job and was thinking about keeping the benefits lol. Unreal.

She was definitely only half serious. She has plenty of money but why pay more than you need to? Lol

The latest “Waiting Your Turn” report on health-care wait times has been released, and it paints a worrying picture of Canada’s medical system.

The Fraser Institute’s survey of specialist physicians has been carried out every year since 1993, and this year’s median wait time is the highest recorded in that time span: 30 weeks between referral from a general practitioner and receipt of treatment.

This is up from 27.7 weeks last year, and an increase of 222 percent since 1993—when the median wait time was just 9.3 weeks.

Did you get hacked? Very strange to post insurance company propaganda in response to this article.

and why is that? private health insurance/hospitals and conservative politicians undercutting and cutting away at the public health system - buckling is a stupid thing to call it though, what a load of hooey. Wonder how long you'd have to wait without health insurance in America? Oh you just would wait forever and go without treatment bc you can't even afford a trip to the doctor, or go bankrupt... great, much better system.

Most of the rank and file are foreign born and don't deal with COBRA. Health insurance overseas is far cheaper than the states.

Perhaps with the many options out there she certainly has the capability to move to a country that offers a better health care system.
Doesn't some even offer free health care?
The US does for some..

I don't know how America works at such a granular level.

It does not, but keep using this thread you started to attack America instead of your favorite economically and ideologically bankrupt Russia.

The WTA covers the health insurance premiums for its Top 125-ranked singles players. The lower-ranked players must pay expensive premiums.
One would think the WTA, with all its allegedly record-high revenue, would be able to provide more coverage for its players. It is a serious issue.

The rusty overweight Venus had not played a match in years, yet accepted a wild card in DC over more deserving players. Along with a big fat appearance fee.

We don't need some billionaire making flippant, dismissive remarks about the health insurance crisis of low-ranked players.

The WTA only needs 125 players, so that's the reality of the tour. If Venus still has box office appeal, then that's her good luck.

Best to directly address the data at hand as reported by Canada's leading Think Tank:

1993: 9 week time to treatment.
2024: 28 week time to treatment.

You are very comfortable with the box office attraction Venus receiving preferential wild-card treatment over far more qualified players.
Unfortunately, this is inconsistent with objecting to the box office attraction Sinner receiving, in your view, a lighter sentence.

It is not COBRA per se, it is the insurance in the USA, generally.
COBRA is just the continuation of the coverage you had up to that point without the employer coverage +2% admin fee. We just went through this (for 2 months while transitioning to the next job) and decided to take the risk and skip it. It is retroactive for a certain period though, if worst, unexpected things happen.
I checked the health.gov or something like that also and their numbers came within $150/month of COBRA...

For those outside of the USA, just to illustrate, the COBRA (or any other insurance) for our family went from fully covered premium by the employer to just over $2k/month premium. The MAX unemployment benefit given is $591/week minus 10% taxes.

Again, i gave you the reasons that happened - canada has private hospitals and health care as well, more money for docs and hospitals to treat private rsther than public patients, cuts to healthcare budgets from governments in the pocket of lobbyists etc… you can post the numbers with no context to try and make a point but that is not reflective of the health system - countries like canada and australia will treat emergencies and things like cancer etc… quickly while elective surgery can take longer
