Venus Williams should quit

Federer's announcement of his retirement from profesional tennis yesterday is a gauntlet thrown down for the older of the Williams sisters, who is a year older than Fed. Venus has been uncompetitive for several years, repeatedly losing in the 1st rounds. If she were to focus on doubles, it would make sense that she would stay on the circuit for a few more years, but she still stubbornly prefers singles. If I had to compare a tennis player to a battery, then Venus is almost dead battery.

Personally I think Williams, a few years back, should have found a Hingis type player to play doubles with. And, possibly, the silverware would have racked up. It's obvious that she loves to play tennis.
I have no issue with her continuing to play singles: her decent record isn't damaged by win/loss percentages as it's never been a factor given many sketchy results.

Why do you care ? She's making bank from sponsors by continuing to play, would you quit if you were making as much as she does ?
At this stage of her career, it would make more sense to focus on doubles and mixed, and she would make more money than losing in the 1st rounds of singles. She is stubborn, like the Czech hockey player Jágr.

And I can be interested, because tennis is played for people, or do you want to question this theses?

No one is stopping her from focusing on the doubles or playing veteran tournaments. However, he no longer has performance in singles competition. If it weren't for the WCs, resulting from her results at the Grand Slams, she wouldn't even be eligible to play in the qualification draws. For your information, he is now in the second thousand.

Venus plays mainly because she loves playing. From a competitive standpoint though, she has been out of the picture post 2017. Her presence doesn't really impact tournaments now, but if she wants to play and is getting in through legit seedings and not by taking wild cards from younger players then I personally am fine with it.

She's not getting in on her ranking. She's getting in because of former glories - within the rules.
Personally, I have no problem with her getting in by the WC route. She's earnt it.
Plus, she remains one of the few WTA marquee names. Tournaments and Sponsors are not going to turn her away.

If she likes it, why should she stop. I don't know why would someone bothered by Venus Williams on court.
maybe one of the reasons someone bothered coz they dont wanna see how she's losing in the first round each time

Some people don't like her getting wildcards but who wouldn't give her a wildcard? She is one of the most famous athletes of all time. Everyone knows the Williams sisters and I bet her name in the draw still sells tickets.

From that perspective we should hand out 25 WCs per event, allowing even Mac and Navratilova to play.

If we wanna turn tennis into an exho circus.

But pro tennis needs to be primarily a serious competitive sport, not a circus trying to make money out of players who can't win even one match.

She can play exhos if she "enjoys" tennis so much. She can make good money that way and offer fans more value by playing vs equals.

Pro events shouldn't be part-exhos. It takes away a bit of their legitimacy. I'm not saying one player like Venus getting tons of WCs and never winning will ruin the credibility of the tour, obviously not, I'm simply addressing your point that money is the only concern. It's not. The WTA anyway doesn't depend on Venus to continue being successful...

The argument that "it sells tickets" doesn't work. Otherwise let's have strippers and dancing bears too, that would draw in huge crowds...

I like watching her play. With the right partner, I think she can still win titles in mixed doubles. Probably not for doubles, and most likely not for singles, but do understand WC’s to increase viewership.

I mean she can do what she wants but I am not sure what is motivating her at this point, unless she really just loves tennis. Plus not having her sister on tour with her anymore, and playing doubles together anymore.

So should Murray and Wawrinka

Yes, Murray needs to pack his bags.

She might love playing, but many years ago, I suggested what others are now: focus on doubles. It worked for other primarily singles players long after the singles game was ineffective against younger generations. Showing up in the singles draw just to lose in the 1st or 2nd round cannot be competitively fulfilling, but going deep as a doubles player at least gives the hope of winning bigger titles.

The guys who are asking players to pack their bags should pack their bags from here.

Who the heck are you to tell when a player should quit ?

Yea shes making big time money from sponsors but I dont believe old washed up players that can barely make it through the first 2 rounds of slams ever should be banking off sponsors either. Not when there are dozens of better, younger players playing. To me thats just stealing money essentially

Which sponsor is still paying her good money?
Those are long gone.

She makes around $5 million a year in sponsorship deals, I wouldn't quit if I was making that kind of money.

Watch Murray now playing Davis Cup, the passion is still there.

Actually Forbes says $11 million

Again, who would pay Venus for what?
I have seen no ads or commercials with her in the last 10 years?
Federer, Graf, Nadal - even Djokovic and Serena. But never Venus.

I could post some links for all her sponsors but that would take some time here's a couple

Surely showing up for the annual USO wildcard is just a small side gig at this point?

She's out of the top 1000, bit weird to call her a full time player
