Venus Williams should quit

I often wonder if Venus ever does any training outside the court. Weights, plyometrics, running?

Lately she just looks incredibly slow and awkward and much more so than can be accounted for merely from being "old".

Whenever I see her try to hustle for a ball she looks like a supermodel having a heels catastrophe on the runway.

See her Instagram. She does live workouts often too.

I really dislike Wild Cards going to washed up former champions. It's one thing if they are coming back from injury and have an artificially low ranking, but they should really be used for up and comers.
Agreed.
There's a separate Champions Tour for men. Don't know if there's a senior/champions tour in the WTA. Venus and other past players could tour in something like that, where they'd be more competitive with each other, and have a lot of fun even if that means a diminished general audience draw.

Good Lord I didn’t realize Venus was ranked ~1000!

Yeah, she’s definitely selfishly taking Wild Cards at big events from younger players.
She's behaving like a hobby pro.

This literally means that she isn't invested in tennis fully, like a professional as she used to do, but decides to play a match here or there, on a whim, because "it's fun". And I mean fun for her to get the attention, not the playing itself.

If this is OK with the WTA and organizers then clearly they don't respect the tour nor do they respect young players trying to get a chance to pick up points... It's meant to be a professional tour, not an exho. There are exhibition events for these kinds of hobby pros or former pros.

It's a bit like a millionaire walking into a cinema and the cinema owners tell everyone to get lost because the place is reserved for a VIP.

It's almost like that, elitism.

If she had a decent ranking and still won the occasional match then the WCs would be valid. But this is not that at all.

Fake smiley masking upset, no 2,345,864,464,358 coming our way...

If facts are hurtful, just ignore them. A lot of people do.

You're right, I'm furious I still get to look forward to Venus matches after all this time :D what happened in 2007 happened and here she still is in GPPD, no? you better stay pressed and keep this thread visible lol

More smileys?

Shocker.

They don't mask what you believe they mask. Quite to the contrary...

I am convinced totally 100% that Venus losing every match must be a lot of fun for you and her other fans. This is only logical.

As it's logical that I should be upset about her string of losses.

"Logic" the kind I expected to read in the reply.

Besides, you can always play her old slam finals, when she occasionally won, to wile away comments like mine.

Smileys and old clips: that might "help", dunno.

I'm always smiling bestie, you should try it sometime ;) meanwhile let's keep discussing the Queen, since she is forefront in your mind. I will admit you're doing a better job of keeping her top of the page than me, for that I'm grateful 8-B

Come on. This is stupid. She can play if she wants, but at her age and that ranking she shouldn’t be getting wild cards. It’s bad for the sport.

Let her get her ranking somewhere in the ballpark before giving her wild cards.

We had Agassi playing challengers, Thiem and Stan too, and others.

So they must love tennis 10000000 times more than Venus.

That contradicts the theory that she loves playing tennis.

Playing tennis. As in showing up on court and hitting balls to an opponent. Which happens in qualifying, not just the main draw.
Well I didn't claim she loves playing tennis. I don't know what's motivating her to carry on, but by this time next year I think she'll be retired anyway.

I was referring to many users here who claim this as fact.

I had my own thread on this same topic a month ago, and many fans were convinced that she's playing out of love of tennis.

Which to me contradicts all facts, as I explained on that thread.

Well if I were to guess I think she loves playing tennis, but also at the highest level available to her. More money and attention... or whatever.

Exactly lol. Hulk Hogan isn't gonna be dropping the leg in saskatoon in front of 40 people brother ;) but he loves wrestling :D

There's a difference between being a professional coach and the coach of a professional. ;)
Some professional coaches are so outdated, not worth a hill of beans on this crazy tennis tour...

I think it's probably right for Venus, but she's earned the right to decide when it's time. She'll probably stick around and pick up a few more WCs for big tournaments before she goes. I actually thought she looked in better physical condition and more match sharp than Serena did pre-USO. but she still meekly went out in R1 to van Uytvanck, and has been going out in R1 of almost every tournament she's entered recently, whilst Serena was still able to take out the world number 2 and win a couple of matches. That tells me she's on her last legs.

So should Murray and Wawrinka

Murray and Venus aren't alike at this point. Murray's still fully committed to the tour, match-fit, plays weekly, and is almost back into the world's top 40, whereas Venus has played half a dozen tournaments this year, barely has a ranking, and randomly takes WCs to events before being knocked out by players she would have bagelled just 4-5 years ago.

Takes a wildcard this week to play Canadian Open. Ranking in the 500s would also require a wildcard to get into the qualifying event. If she's playing for the love of the game, go play the ITFs with similarly ranked players. She either needs the attention or the money. Don't laugh at the money comment. Pro athletes can spend like nobody's business and if she invested her own money in that clothing company (like Borg did) she could be wiped out. She's tarnishing her legacy badly. That train wreck vs. Keys last night was horrifyingly bad. You know she'll get a US Open wildcard. How many years will this continue? Make the US Open your last event and let your many fans celebrate and cheer you into retirement.

Federer's announcement of his retirement from profesional tennis yesterday is a gauntlet thrown down for the older of the Williams sisters, who is a year older than Fed. Venus has been uncompetitive for several years, repeatedly losing in the 1st rounds. If she were to focus on doubles, it would make sense that she would stay on the circuit for a few more years, but she still stubbornly prefers singles. If I had to compare a tennis player to a battery, then Venus is almost dead battery.
Please see this recent post of mine.

Shino and I are calling a foot fault on Venus for this decision. Hopefully she handles it better than her sister did.

I don't mind if she retired now or not. The age is gone. Her sister took best decision to step away, get married and have a daughter and then come back again. Venus is very old now.

Fascinating video. Thanks. If she still has this much passion for the game, she should keep going while she is fit and healthy enough. There is no doubt about her talent.
Passion for the game is one thing but she's won 7 slam titles and knows she doesn't have any chance of going deep in a singles slam anymore.
She's a legend, an ATG, and the*a sister of the great Serena Williams. Isn't there a legends tour for women too?
She's not some journeywoman destined to lose in first rd or qualies.
Out of dignity and being a former champ I'd step aside from singles and play doubles or mixed because going on the court and getting embarrassed by younger avg. players is not a good look for an ATG year after year.
Hopefully, it's not a money issue. I doubt it since Serena has a lot to give if it were.
Navratilova left singles and won a few doubles titles. Zvonareva still plays competitive dubs.
I guess her baby Sampras mixed dub partner isn't playing with her anymore?
