Venus Williams should quit

Don't laugh at the money comment. Pro athletes can spend like nobody's business and if she invested her own money in that clothing company (like Borg did) she could be wiped out.

She has an interior design company, and reportedly the interior design market saw big gains during the pandemic.

She should try to win a Gold Ball at one the national USTA age division tournaments.

Those Gold Balls are really hard to win. I think there are only 4 per year in each age division.

Meanwhile, I’m just ready to see her play in Cincy and the US Open :D
Every Venus match is must see and I’m ready for as many more thrills as I can get, same with King Rafa.

1:6, 1:6 from the qualifier player in the 1st round of the US Open. Venus no longer has the performance for elite tournaments and only WCs from the organizers keep her in the main draws. Her career found itself in a permanent convulsion.

I like Venus and think she should play as long as she wants, but I suspect that knee injury from the grass season is actually pretty bad and she wont play next year, despite having a few decent matches this year that showed her picking up a bit of form, it's clear she is probably not going to be able to stay injury free

I Thought thats what the senior's tour was for? Theres plenty of places to play tennis.. You don't have to embarrass yourself on TV to do it. I don't like it because they are hogging up a spot for someone younger that may have a chance. Its why I'm tired of Murray

It is sad to see Venus turning into a punching bag for players she would have crushed in her peak.
I agree, but I still respect the fact she gets out there and is playing. Someone of her caliber can play as long as they wish and lose first round until they're 50, it's their choice. It doesn't diminish her legacy. Venus (like Andy Murray) has earned the right to go out how and when she wants.

They of course can play for as long as they want, but getting slaughtered and letting players who have no business beating you, crush you in front of the world is sad to see. When it is time, everyone should look to move onto the next phase in their life.

Agree w you about Venus, but isn’t Murray actually qualifying at this point - like he’s got a ranking and doesn’t need the WC right?

That's a valid point. I confess I have hardly ever watched Venus since I don't watch WTA, but she won 7 slams and was obviously a great player. I sure liked her a ton more than her sister. If Roger was still out there on tour and losing to mugs first round everywhere, it would hurt. If I look at it through that prism, then it would indeed be sad and borderline devastating to watch as a fan.

at least Murray wins matches and gets out the first round. He may not win another major tournament but he is still competitive. He is ranked 37th. Venus is not now and it is hard to watch and I don't see her putting in the work like Murray did to get out of needing wild cards.

Murray won in straight sets and is m ore than capable of beating Dimitrov... they aren't remotely in the same place in their careers.

Indeed, one has worked hard to get back to top 40 in the world, is still very competitive, and now no longer requires wildcards. The other one is on an extended swan song.

If Murray moved like Venus yesterday, he'd already be retired.

The Murray/Venus comparison is unfair and lazy. The former qualified by virtue of his ranking, has had top ten wins, and won tournaments. Venus beat Georgi.
Mmmmmmm . .

I personally think that legends like Venus deserve one 'legacy wildcard' for grand slams and other tournaments on an individual basis, but no more.

So at Wimbledon, this year was the first time that she received a legacy wildcard (or a wildcard full-stop during her career I believe?), as she only played mixed doubles in 2022, and got in through her ranking in 2021 after a few players ahead of her withdrew. Therefore I had no problem with that.

However at the US Open, she received a wildcard last year, so I didn't think that she deserved another one for the main draw this year. Now I wouldn't have objected her to receiving a wildcard for the qualifying draw.

Djokovic barely won 23 slams
the point is Murray has no place in this conversation. Now, I think Venus has been injured enough (and is obviously a drawcard to events) to warrant wildcards and was seriously attempting to come back, and has played much better than this match this year - so I think people are being a bit unfair on her, but Murray, Wawrinka etc... who had wildcards for a while are perfectly at tour level and capable of beating anyone on their day and are in a very different place to Venus.

Venus William's record since 2020 is 7-28, 3-8 this season!!! Enough with the wildcards. I have said it before if she truly loves tennis then earn your spot in main draws, play some 125's or 250's to get the ranking up. Ahhh but the issue truly is that there is no glitz and glamour at those events and if we've learned anything about the William's sister is that they truly love the attention and spotlight.

She was injured from the start of 2021 thru to US Open 2022 - didn't play at all. and 2020 was obviously an abbreviated season - it's not really as much of a gotcha as you think - Murray, Thiem, Wawrinka needed plenty of wc's. I think she will retire and not play next year, pretty clear her knee injury is worse than she's letting on so it won't be an issue - but very obviously any time she has shown a flicker of good form she has gotten injured again so to make out like injury hasn't factored in to this is is very disingenuous.

She's always hurt !!!! Stop treating tennis as a hobby and showing up for the big events !!!

well exactly, i think she might quit before the end of the year bc of the knee unfortunately - but she played in Auckland, a couple of non-big grass lead ins and again played lead ups in the states... it's not like she just flitted in for Wimbledon and the US Open without playing a match. It's very clear this year she made a concerted effort to play better and more and was thwarted by injury. Your characterisation of her is not accurate.

She's only been a part time player due to injury I would guess? That was only her 10th match since last year's USO. Currently at 401 in the live rankings. Will she can get enough wildcards to play a somewhat regular schedule or earn enough points to become a tour regular again? I can't see her playing the WTA version of challengers or qualifying on a regular basis.

No, she should not quit.
If she sells tickets, and keeps you busy worrying about her, I still like to see her out there.
When did she sell tickets?? I was there for that debacle on Tuesday, it was hardly full. People started coming in mid second set to get ready for Alcaraz.
FYI, US Open tickets are sold in April/May, so those people wouldn't have shown up if say Pegula was on the schedule???

does this look like someone willing to play challengers?

She doesn't !!!! Please stop with that.
Do you think everybody who left after Tuesday night's match was saying "Please let me see some more of that".
Literally every tournament she plays in sells more tickets when they say she’s coming :D
