Venus Williams should retire

Venus Williams is 26 years old (a year older than Roger the Great) and so is too old to play women's tennis. She should retire NOW for her safety. What do you think?

she was injured just like serena , see how serena is doing now after her recovery !
BTW 26 is not that old at all ..

Some new uploads this week :D

When Venus is serving and moving and volleying like this, and wearing one of the iconic Reebok kits, things start to get kinda Goaty (to borrow your phrase).

I can't remember when Venus and Serena switched to more control-orientated racquets, but it's incredible how consistent they are playing with those ultra powerful hybrid-style Wilson frames. Those things were absolute rocket launchers.

About the right time for Venus to call it a career. Serena, hang in there until you collect Grand Slam number 25.

What I found nuts is their movement in the early 2000's, there was like no ball they couldn't get to  Especially Venus

Absolutely. The top end speed is one thing, but also the ability to just step on the brakes on the full run and change direction so effortlessly when approaching the net or defending.

It was all over for great players like Hingis once Venus arrived on the scene. Hingis had amazing placement and disguise to wrongfoot players, but the pace of shot just wasn't heavy enough.

With Venus you can get her to move and favour one side but she still might get you even if you wrongfoot her because of that phenomenal recovery speed.

Jankovic was another player who had that recovery speed, but obviously nowhere near the same speed on the dead run as Venus, and nowhere near the same insane net game or serve.

Venus has that long instep, too.

Hingis leads Venus 11-10.
Heck, Hingis only trails Serena 6-7.
Hingis is 17-17 vs. Williams.

If you dig into the details of those head to heads, you'll surely see that Hingis last played Serena in 2002.

She lost the last three matches she played against Serena, including a bagel in her final set against her.

Hingis only played against Venus 7 times from 2000 onwards. She acquitted herself very well, but still has a 2-5 losing record against Venus after 2000.

Believe me, I'm not saying Hingis wasn't a great player, she's a favourite of mine, but the Williams sisters were another level.

Hingis acquitted herself very well against Venus and Serena when they were getting started on tour but the writing was on the wall once Venus and Serena found their feet at the start of the 2000s.

Imagine peak Venus and Serena on tour today  Venus was in 2 slam finals and a semi at 38 :)

Maybe Venus and Serena and Roger are enjoying touring and the tennis too much, to retire! Why should they?

Look at Kim Clijster, she wants to come back touring after years of retirement and motherhood. That's the last thing the Williams sisters want!

Neh, the 2 sisters already made their money. Did I mention Serena's husband is a Silicon Valley billionaire? I was going to mention about Venus' many younger boyfriends while on tour!

Would like to see fastcourt era Venus against Andreescu. Andreescu plays an interesting form of all court tennis loaded with variety but also a lot of attitude. A bit of a battle of the tennis IQs with both players able to use every inch of the court. My concern would be Andreescu's mobility letting her down as Venus can take the ball so early and spread the court. If Andreescu couldn't cover that it might get ugly.

I do think this current generation of WTA players is very impressive, but peak Serena is as close as we have ever come to a player we can compare between eras without too much trouble. Any court, any place against any potential opponent, peak Serena wins the bracket. You could have her playing in old fashioned gear with a Jack Kramer woodie on Har-Tru against any potential opponent and she takes the hypothetical imo.

It makes it all the more impressive that Venus faced that version of Serena and really caused a lot of damage multiple times in big matches against Serena.

How many slam events did Hingis play in 2002? Two.
How many slam events did Hingis play in 2003? None.
How many slam events did Hingis play in 2004? None.

Williams were "on another level" because Hingis couldn't walk properly and retired....

Yes, she didn't play in those years. I think that's the reason the head to head looks a bit better than one might think. The majority of the singles matches she played against Venus and Serena were in the late 90s.

By the early 2000s, the Williams had Hingis figured out and could hit her off the court.

Your contention is that it was because Hingis was injured. In my opinion it's because the sisters were better players.

Not to labour the point, because I like Hingis, too. There's no agita informing this view. The Williams were just better by quite a way imo.

Serena got older and slower and more overweight after Hingis retired, so Hingis was unlucky that she didn't get to play the weaker version of Serena.
Hingis faced the most athletic version of Serena, and what happened when they met in 2001? Hingis beat Venus and Serena back-to-back at the Australian Open.
And then Hingis was retired by the end of 2002....

The 2001 pair of wins is a great feat by Hingis, no doubt. The only wins she scored against the Williams sisters in a major in the 2000s came in that fortnight.

They definitely drove the Captiati's and Davenport's of the world out lol

I'm still a huge Capriati fan, and Davenport was such a clean hitter, but yeah there was not really any defence against someone like Venus. Venus could stand and bang with a top quality baseliner, but also tear someone up with her freaky net game and huge serve.

Apparently Capriati hasn't been doing that well recently. Have been looking around for info and interviews but it's hard to find a lot of new stuff. She's not really in tennis much any more I don't think.

The early 2000s was such a good time for American tennis, I don't think we will ever see it again.

Is Venus intelligent? People make her out to be a thoughtful, clever woman but I've never heard it. She just sounds like a pseudo-intellectual.

Plus her sister is Serena so...

If you're having fun going about your job and making lots of money on the side, it's no one's business to tell you to retire!

Now I will never tell Roger to retire, which I occasionally did in the past, because now I know how Fedfans feel!

No clue what intelligence is, but she earns millions of dollars a year in income from investments, went from poverty to being worth 100 million, done nothing to disgrace herself..yeah, pretty smart to me... Who do you nominate and intellectual tour de force on the tour?

Damn. Nothing says 2007 quite like Pirates of the Caribbean.

I'll never forget the theater going nuts when Barbosa walked down the stairs at the end of Pirates 2. A true movie theater moment :D
Pirates 2 will always be one of my top 10 movies ever.

Making investments are ridiculously easy once you have money. Hardly representative of a considerable degree of intelligence, I'd argue.
