Venus and her Sister gave the sport a lot. Their popularity at their peak was second only to the big 3 and in the States they were way bigger name. They have inspired generations.

With that said, isn't there a time to let go of things?

She has not played a match in years. She does not want to put in the work to play qualifiers and earn her place.
Instead, she expects a wild card, which means another player will be denied that opportunity.
This comes across as an ego trip.

Agree.
She's an ATG and should be a coach if she loves the tour that much.
No way should she be playing singles this long and tarnish her legacy. But I can understand doubles.

If she loves the tour so much perhaps she should stick to doubles where she would be more competitive. I have to imagine that the wild cards will end if she keeps getting trounced in the first round of every tournament she enters.

It's a tough dilemma. On the one hand, she can do whatever she wants after how much she's given the sports. Also, this will attract many more viewers. On the other hand, she's going to lose, by a lot, and that spot could've gone to a new talent.

I bet she'll get at least 7 games total

If you were entertained that is all that matters. The customer is never wrong.
…Don't like it? Get rid of the Wild Card practice. Problem solved…

Fair play, she played a good match, but it's doubles and they were up against the pickleball swimsuit model and a random American.

Let's see how she moves when Stearns starts pushing her from side to side tomorrow.

The organizers are free to award wild-cards to those who fill the seats. After all, we are free-market capitalists, not communists.
It is then up to each player to decide whether she wishes to accept the unmerited free entry and the accompanying risk of an embarrassing first-round loss.
In this case, we have a 45-year-old who hasn’t played in years. It should be an utter bloodbath.
The only question is how many games the kind and gentle Stearns will mercifully donate.

On the other hand, she's going to lose, by a lot, and that spot could've gone to a new talent.
She has not played in years. She is far above her normal playing weight.
Are we supposed to pretend that she is not overweight?

She's not overweight for a normal person. She looks fine. But she is probably not at her ideal weight for a competitive pro tennis player. But, she's obviously OK with that. Stupid question from a reporter.

She should continue to play because she is a symbol of courage against oppressive forces.

She suffers from a chronic disease which people forget.

Watched Roddick's podcast about this. He said a small tourney like DC is justified in trying to attract attention by giving her a WC.

He also speculated that she might be angling for a WC for the USO (she is already playing mixed dubs in the new format with Opelka).

Yeah it will be a 6-1 6-0 washout.

Venus lacks judgement.

Eh, who is this really hurting? The Washington event gets to sell a bunch of tickets.

Her line is set at O/U 5.5 games. Under 5.5 games is at -140, over 5.5 games is +100. to be honest with you, it seems highly, highly unlikely that she wins more than five games against a solid opponent, but you never know with some funny business going on and some charity work or whatever.

You never know, Kimiko Date was still winning matches against Top 100 players at age 45, and in their primes Venus was a better player than Date

To be honest, no former #1 past age 45 should have that option because it takes away from other worthy young US players who would get the wildcard.
We want to see new young talent in 500s, not 45 yr olds in WTA singles.

more viewers? it's just not the same as seeing MJ, Lebron at 40 yrs old or Brady at 45.
My favorite memory of her playing is from the late 90s.

She has a minus percentage chance of winning any singles 500 tournament.

Her doubles match yesterday had huge crowd. It's a business and entertainment.

For some it is. I won't put myself through that. I refuse to watch an older ATG play at a third of their past level.
I'd still watch the Big 3, Serena and Steffi at the age.

yes, but Venus hasn't played in quite a while and our opponent is young and playing well. All the money came in on the under and now the line is set at 4.5 games.so

The issue I had with Roddick in that podcast is that he kept saying a 7 time GS Champion should be given wildcards whenever they want. The flaw or caveat in this should be the player needs to be active, she is not and she should be competitive, she hasn’t been in years.

He said a 7-time player who is trying to claw herself back in would be a valid case.

How has she tried to claw her way back in ?? How about playing a 125 or 250 to show you are actually trying to claw your way back. It’s always the 500 and 1000 levels. Weak argument at best.

Do you think tennis should have weigh-ins like boxing? If so, before all matches or maybe just before finals?

Every picture tells a story. She is now carrying more weight and will struggle with movement against Stearns.
Singles tennis is a moving sport. This is not pickelball doubles.

No. 1 2025 tennis goal: "I don't like setting too many ranking goals, but a broad goal for me is to end the year in the top 20. I like setting performance goals, so getting a serve in the better place, just getting fitter, and those kind of things are just little stepping stones that I can control because you can't control if you win or lose."
